I had a brief look and switched back:

a) When you look at the group overview, there doesn't appear to be anything
to indicate which threads have any new posts.

b) All the toolbar icons are pretty much identical. You have to hover the
mouse over each one to see what it does.

Yes, for a given pressure, stress in the walls of a cylindrical pressure
vessel (of which a tyre is a good approximation) is proportional to the
diameter of the vessel. So a 50mm tyre at any pressure will put about twice
as much stress on the walls of the rim as a 25mm tyre at the same pressure.
Conversely, a 50mm tyre at, say, 35psi, and a 25mm tyre at 70psi will put
approximately equal stresses on the rim wall.

On the bike I have that takes that sort of tyhre size, with 55mm tyres I
run the front at 25pis and the rear at 35psi (H Plus Son Todestrieb rims).

Wow. I weigh 385 and I pump any 50+ mm tire to 45 psi and consider that

I've been riding Dyads and have had 50+ mm tires on them probably 95% of

Re: [RBW] Velocity Dyads and 50mm Tires

2020-06-22 Thread John Rinker
Peter,

Thank you for your insight on this. I weigh about 180lbs and run my
Marathons at around 25 psi and 32 psi front a rear respectively (a little
more depending what I'm carrying). I don't know if these lower pressures
are a culprit, but it doesn't seem so according to what you've said.
Velocity has been great about offering to replace the rim with a more
suitable one (Cliffhanger).

On my mountain bikes, I've run Mavic 719s forever with 2.25 tires. These
rims seem to have a similar width as the Dyads, and I've never split a rim
with fat tires. I got a set of wheels that are almost 20 years old and they
still ride true after being beat to hell and back on my hardtail.

Cheers,
John

Re: [RBW] Travel bikes

2020-06-22 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
This bike has the same problem that my Dahon Speedhound had: It’s too big when
folded to count as checked baggage.

Southwest Airlines (and I think most airlines have similar policies) counts
anything larger than 62 inches when height, width and length are combined *or*
more than 50 pounds as “oversize” or “overweight” and therefore subject to
fees. This particular bike would be 77 inches (folded size 14 x 27 x 36 = 77)
and would be charged the same as a full-sized non-folding bike in a full-sized
box.

The only advantage, I guess, is that the Allegro would be easier to handle
between airport and ground transport. Other than that, you’re still going to
pay a lot to take this on an airplane—$150 to $200 per trip. That adds up.

My Brompton, by the way, goes into a hard case that’s 25 x 25 x 12 (total of 62
inches, just at the limit) and weights 48 pounds with the bike, saddle bag, and
a floor pump. Southwest just puts it on the plane with no argument and no fee.

If I’m doing a very long ride at my destination (like a brevet or PBP), I will
bring a full-sized bike and pay the fee. If I’m just riding for fun, I bring
the Brompton.

Re: [RBW] Velocity Dyads and 50mm Tires

2020-06-22 Thread Peter White
I'm a Velocity distributor. But their recommended tire sizes make no sense
to me.

The problem with fat tires isn't that they're fat. It's that the tire
manufacturers give pressure ratings that only take into account the tire's
ability to stay on the rim, rather than a tire pressure that actually
delivers a good ride, and doesn't put excessive force on the sidewall of
the rim. For example, Schwalbe says that if the rider weighs 240 lbs, a
50mm wide tire should be inflated to 70psi. This is absurd. At the same
pressure (psi) the larger the tire, the more force is applied to the rim's
sidewalls. It's POUNDS PER SQUARE INCH, and when you increase the square
inches of the tire's surface area, you increase the load on the sidewalls
of the rim. So it's no wonder that we see rims failing due to cracks in the
sidewalls, and cracks under the rim strips.

[RBW] Re: Frame repair in the Bay Area?

2020-06-22 Thread eddietheflay
Does Mikkelsen have a good helper these days? I know he had a stroke a
number of years ago and was less than 100% when I had him do work on my
Kogswell with a dent in the top tube.

And I have not worked with Litton but have heard many a story about less
than timely response and turnaround. Obviously he is good to great at what
he does.

If the problem on your frame is just the chain stay that would suggest it
would be not too expensive to ship that half of the frame to someone who is
both competent and timely.

I wonder about the crack in your frame. I have two friends who had Ti
Breakaway frames and both suffered longitudinal cracks in the chain stay.
Ritchey replaced them under warranty cuz it looked like poor quality tubes.

exact one: https://hilltrek.co.uk/clothing/smocks/foinaven-smock/

They offer other smocks (anoraks). Double ventile (DV) is just as
waterproof as the cotton analogy, but doesn't remove moisture as actively.
THey also have hybrids (double at shoulders, maybe sleeves?), or single

They aren't cheep, but they are also the last jackets I'll buy. To me,
anything else I've tried has been a waste of money.

For suppleness, consider Challenge Paris-Roubaix (27
 mm) or Strada Bianca (30
 and 36
 mm) tires in their
respective "Pro" versions, which are what Challenge calls their tires with
260 tpi or higher thread count carcasses. They generally run a bit larger
than stated, especially the P-R, that runs to about 29mm even on fairly
narrow rims. If you get Challenge products from Europe, they're actually
reasonably priced too (although still not inexpensive).

I have a Dahon Tournado, bought off CL locally. It’s the only one I’ve ever
seen, clearly made by Richey. It’s a very comfortable real, regular bike that
gets frequent use around town. Just so happens you can take the frame
apartI’ve traveled with it 3-4 times and never paid for oversized or bike
fees (what’s in it? Bike parts for display).
I would buy a Breakaway in a heartbeat if something happened to this one.
Does anyone have any more information about this Dahon?

[RBW] Re: Velocity Dyads and 50mm Tires

2020-06-22 Thread Garth

I think Velocity's conservative rating are more to do with
minimizing/discouraging legal/warranty claims. A rim such as a Dyad ought
to handle a 50mm tire. The wheel build itself has to be taken into account
though, as well as air pressure.

For other rims...
DT TK540 is spec'd as being suitable for 23-60mm tires.
Alex DM24 for even bigger. I'll have these for my Susie.
Sun Rhyno Lite. I have one wheel with these.
Mavic's A319 and A719, spec'd @47mm though some European retailers note
50mm works also. I have the A719 with Big Ben's on my Bombadil and will be
trying some Vittoria Terrene 2.1's. Many riders report riding them up to
2.35's.

2020-06-22 Thread 'Abcyclehank' via RBW Owners Bunch
Jay,

There are two really nice slightly used NWT Bike Friday’s with Rohloff hubs (2
previous European Tours). One large one Small, designed for 6’2” male rider
and a 5’3” female rider.

Possibly the seller could give your relevant info about your travel desires as
well.

Could Buy both Now for $5000 plus $80 shipping each.
Almost $1 of bikes with most of the modifications you would want.

I agree frequently making modifications can eat up the cost difference from
going new but in this case either your new bikes will depreciate significantly
for you or you could essentially try these with little additional depreciation.

If you each are within 2-4 inches of the original owners I would believe you
could dial these in based on my experience getting a Bike Friday modified
easily for me at 6’7”.

Just a option. I would offer the seller $4000 for both and you might have 2
bikes for the price of less than one .

Sincerely,
Ryan Hankinson

[RBW] Re: Dirt droppish questions for smallish impulse buy

2020-06-22 Thread R. Alexis
Hello!,

I have ridden a couple dirt drops the original Wilderness Trail
Bike/Specialized/Nitto RM-3 Dirt Drop bar
https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/product/nitto-handlebar-rm3-dirt-drop-2758?page=2=977.

I have them on both my WTB Phoenix Steel and Ti along with my OX Brand Ti
Cruiser with two more bike on deck to get them. I got a Gary Fisher tandem
with a set of the bars that I plan on moving to my Heron Touring/Wayfarer
and plan on building up my Ibis Mojo with a set. The other is the Nitto
RM014
https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/product/nitto-handlebar-rm014f-dirt-drop-31-8mm-4117?page=3=977

that I have installed on my 1987 Schwinn Voyageur with a Velo-Orange Cigne
stem. I have a set of the Salsa Woodchipper in in 25.4 clamp new in
package.

I got both the Nitto RM 014 and Salsa Woodchipper before Nitto finally
decided to reintroduce the RM-3. I was enamored by the first dirt drop bike
I saw, a 1990 Trek 970 with WTB Shifter mounts owned by a bike shop manager
I later worked under. When I ordered my Rivendell Mountain I got it with
the thought of possibly using dirt drops in the future. I tried a standard
drop on a bike years ago that I acquired with a frameset years ago, and I
was not care for it. I have a variety of bars on bikes original Jones H-Bar
J bend, Scott AT-3 bar, Schwinn 411 handlebar/basket combo
https://bikerumor.com/2012/06/19/fun-new-bikes-from-schwinn/, Surly 1x1
Torsion bar and several flat bars with variety of bar ends and Moustache
bars.

The RM 014 is working well for me.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

[RBW] Velocity Dyads and 50mm Tires

2020-06-22 Thread John Rinker
Good morning,

Just wondering if anyone else has had an issue with Velocity Dyad rims
splitting on the sidewalls while running fatter tires. I have been running
some Schwalbe Marathon Mondials (28x2.0) and muy rear rim recently split. I
am told by Velocity (who has been very helpful, indeed) that the tires are
too big for these rims.

I love the tires and the rims, but perhaps I need an alternative to the
Dyad to run these tires. Any recommendations?

Cheers,
John

[RBW] Re: Seen some Gus builds, no Susies yet....

2020-06-22 Thread Garth
My Susie frame will get here this week. It's rather anticlimactic though as
it's summer and summer is for riding ! I'll get around to assembling it
eventually.

For clarity, these Tange BB's follow the same specs as Shimano and most
others. A "oversize" 73mm shell is simply +2.5mm on each side from center.
It's just a wider shell. It's part of the same British standard, just
wider, typical on mtb's. It's nothing new, and not really necessary.

As you can see from the image, the 73 BB's simply add that 2.5mm to each
side. If the image appears small just zoom in on it.

Thankfully my 149mm Sram S600 crank takes a 113 so I got a 73x113 BB. The
Silver cranks can run into problems because the relatively straight arms,
great on a typical road/mountain bike but not so great on bike that can
take 2.8" tires with a typical spaced cassette. Myself I'd rather eliminate
the smallest cog and move the remaining cogs outward than have to resort to
a overly long spindle as that just increases the chain angle even more.

2020-06-22 Thread Ray Varella
Alex,
I’m just trying to picture the differences.
Is the barrel of the 73mm bb 5mm wider so the bearings are placed 5mm further
outboard or are the mounting rings 5mm thicker.

I really haven’t kept up with newer standards.

Thank you
Ray

2020-06-22 Thread Alex Wirth- Owner, Yellow Haus Bicycles
@Ray that's definitely an option.  Since I wasn't sure what tire/crank/BB I
was going to use/would work, I figured I'd better experiment with $30
options rather than $200 options.

Phil Wood was actually the end goal at the beginning but once I found that
NOS three piece Tange BB. I'm really hoping that works out 爛
