[RBW] Re: Rapid rise polarizing

2021-07-12 Thread Joe Bernard
I had one for a short while and found it finicky to install and
counterintuitive to shift. I'm sure both of these reactions are based on
decades of high-normal derailers, I think RapidRise is probably better for
new riders who've never messed with the other way.

[RBW] Rapid rise polarizing

2021-07-12 Thread sam . perez . 2002
Hey guys,
Why is there so little info on rapid rise RD and why is it so polarizing.
Sources include bike snob grants blog and random internet sources. Takeaways
were finicky and needing frequent adjustment but also great concept and easy
down shifting. Any experience thoughts insights?

Thanks

Re: [RBW] Rivet Sonora: Trying it on the Platypus

2021-07-12 Thread Leah Peterson
Lol, Doug. Yes, you’re onto something.

I took a slight departure from that rabbit hole (the tinkering hole) and
plunged into a different one (the new bike hole). I LOVE the Platy as it’s
currently set up. I don’t think I’ll change it. I’ve discovered that dyno wires
and light mounts make that very difficult. Instead of tinkering with the
near-perfect Platypus, I’m adding a new bike and setting it up for different
purposes. The raspberry bike will remain my main squeeze, used for pleasure,
exercise, and light errands.

I guess I’m going to be Three Bike Leah. In building that bike, I was in
need of a saddle. I decided to try a new saddle on my raspberry dream
bike, and then move along the Platy saddle (a lovely B17 Select) to the
new bike. I have heard a lot of good press about Rivet. I began looking
over their offerings and decided to email the company to ask a couple of
questions. The owner, Debra Banks, emailed me back very quickly. She
answered my questions, so I decided to try the beautiful ivory Sonora. The
Sonora arrived today and, quicker than a jackrabbit on a date, I installed
on the Platypus. It really looks fantastic.

I got the one with a cutout. I have never had a cutout, don’t know if I
need a cutout. The nose is shorter and the rails are longer, and so far
(I’ve ridden it a few miles today) it would seem to be perfect. Will there
be patina that wears away the white paint in the leather? Yes. Am I a
priss about that? No. I like patina.

I will rack up some miles and report back in case anyone else was
considering a Rivet. Might take me awhile since Vegas is hotter than Hades…

Yes and Riv timelines were meaningless *before *a worldwide frames/parts
shortage during a bike boom. If you see a used Riv you like and you can
possibly justify the price, *buy it. *

Supposedly, a new batch is coming late this year so I would factor that in
if there's any concern about its used-ness, but if it's a local pickup (ie
no shipping on top of that cost), a 'free' Silver 2pc crankset for the

[RBW] Re: $1800 a fair price for a 53cm Susie? 2-piece silver crankset included

2021-07-12 Thread Joe Bernard
There's a Susie and Cheviot on SF Bay Craigslist that are probably
optimistically priced, but a complete 45cm Clem L listed at $1600 is gone.
I'll bet they got at or near asking price, which is about what a new one
costs.

Probably where the market is for the Gus + Susie right now: long production
schedule, new Riv model so not a big used market, no real comparable
designs so hard to find an alternative, and the people who have them tend
to hold onto them. Maybe ask the seller if they could include other parts
they have on or for the bike (e.g., brakes, seatpost) to take some of the

2021-07-12 Thread Joe Bernard
A year ago I would have balked but now? The worldwide bike/parts shortage
has created an insane market which has dramatically affected used Riv
prices, most of which are unavailable new from them right now. So yeah, if
the frame isn't all scratched to heck it's fair. Someone will pay that.

Is this for an entire bike or a frameset with bb, headset and crankset? If
the latter, I would say it is a bit high as you can find plenty of used
