Re: [RBW] SON Rear Light Brightness?

2021-10-29 Thread Sean B.
Thank you for all the replies. I would like a SON rear light that's always
on, and a secondary light. But, I dont have much room to mount a battery
powered one. I was looking for some kind of hanging light to attach to my
North Street trunk sack. The only hanging light I can find is Well
google "hanging bike light" if you'd like.

Anyways, does any one know of a hanging light to attach to a bag?

Re: [RBW] SON Rear Light Brightness?

2021-10-29 Thread greenteadrinkers
I have a SON28, Edelux 2, and the SON rear light mounted on the backside of
a Brooks. I don't feel totally safe with just the SON tail light, it's
great that it's there, but I def. augment it with something much much
stronger, namely a Diontte. I've been knocked off my bike three times in
Philly, once I started to ride with a Dinotte, people def. could see me.
The SON is cute, and it's nice to always have something on, but it's easy
enough to overlook from a driver's point of view, and I'm not totally in
love with the extra wiring going the rear of the bike. if I had this system
built out again, I'd just go with a high-end battery-powered light, the
Diontte is a game-changer in you have to ride in heavy traffic day or night.

[RBW] Re: The scariest Rivendell - Halloween Special - Pumpkin QuickBeam and Carbon

2021-10-29 Thread Max S
Thank you all for your comments, questions, and apologies for the delay –
I've been absolutely slammed with work and family obligations.

*Bill:* Yes, I've seen that picture of Grant... But Spinergies... Yikes!
:-)
*Dave:* Indeed!.. In seriousness, I have fairly low flexibility naturally,
and sit too much at work, so my lower back doesn't tolerate well more
saddle-to-bar drop than ~1-2 inches. I might also have a shorter torso for
my height. Whatever the biometrics, this 58 cm QB fits great.
*John:* Yes. This past couple of years I've been re-discovering
single-speeding / fixed gear riding, and it's somehow more fun for me.
*Eric:* I did build a commuter bike for my oldest using BSPs and, for a
moment, used Schraeder tubes. Then got a new wheelset on iBOB and
prest(a)-change-o!
*Wally:* I've been riding the QB off and on with different wheels,
including some aluminum rim tubulars. To be perfectly honest, I've not had
the chance to glue these specific ones yet (see above about work, etc.), so
I only rode the bike around the neighborhood. But I've some tubular tape on
order and want to give it a go with the crabon hoopz.
*Matthew:* Yes, post and stem are Ti, brushed finish. Post is an Eriksen
setback. Stem is an Ibis, 90° / 95 mm or thereabout. I've had them on my
Ibis Spanky, but alas, not enough stack on that bike anymore. Saddle is a
Selle Italia SLR 135g version.
*Joe:* Thank you. More than 11 - wow! Must be the spicy color. :-)
*Ryan:* Currently geared 50x18. There are definitely days where it's too
much, but I've also set some nice PRs for 40+-mile rides on it on dirt, but
elevation gain around here is maybe 1,500-2,000 ft over that distance, with
occasional < 5% short kickers. It's the downhills that get me more. :-)
*Matt:* The rear mount is actually what came with a Cyclic Fly6 rear camera
/ light. Not sure if it's strictly Garmin compatible, but possible. I think
DCRainMaker might have more info on that?..
*Rob:* Yes, the wheelset came to me *via* another forum, and the original
owner had it custom-built by Vanilla to match his custom frame. The red
stripe ends up looking a close enough match for the deep orange of the QB
that it somehow works. I can get unduly neurotic about color combos, so
there's a good chance that after a few rides on these wheels I'll go back
to my gray-painted Mavic Reflex tubies to match the post and stem.
Otherwise I'll end up having to swap in a black post and black Salsa stem
and black SRAM levers, and... well, you get the idea. Although, the winter
is long here...

[RBW] Susie & Gus take a 40 day Vacation

2021-10-29 Thread Joseph

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LUGgOqEqOkc

took a 40 day vacation with bikes. I ride a Gus and my friend, Tim, a
Susie. Check out the video above for a recap of events in sequential order.

The original idea was a skate trip by bicycles but with mediocre at best
planning. We would ride from Seattle to Oakland finding as much dirt and
gravel as possible.
We left Chicago by car on July 3rd with my wife, 2 dogs, 2 bikes and plenty
of camping equipment. We dropped my bike off in Seattle to get the front
hub replaced and drove up to Orcas Island for some camping and skating.
After 10 days of driving my wife dropped Tim & I in Seattle to begin the
biking portion. Yes, my wife dropped us in Seattle and drover herself and
the 2 dogs back to Chicago by herself. She is the best and has already let
me know she will not be doing that again anytime soon.
Free Range Cycles in Seattle was the starting point for the biking portion
because that is where my bike was. We had a late start and ended up
skating under the bridge, Marginal Way, until dark with the Grindline
crew. A guy named Isaac gave us a place to crash on the flat bottom of
there indoor vert ramp. He also gave us a great route to hit skateparks
along the way towards Yakima.

We zigzagged through Washington hitting skateparks along the way. If you
didn't know already the Seattle area has the most skateparks per capita.
The route was not straight forward but the trip was not meant to be. We
rode towards Yakima and hung for a day before making our way
towards Bingen, WA.
After skating Bingen Park for a full day we hitchhiked across the Columbia
River to get into Hood River, Oregon. From Hood River we rode to Portland
and instead of staying in Portland for 3 days we stayed for 14. After
about 8 days our friend finally asked how long we would be sleeping on his
floor. We originally thought we would ride the Oregon Outback but due to
heavy fires thought best to just stay and skate Burnside everyday and do
some s24o in the Portland area. (We plan on going back and doing the
Outback in the early spring time). We both were not interested in biking
the 1 and used a Hertz bailout to rent a van and drive the 1 with our bikes
to Oakland. Saving our legs for lots of day rides and skating through the
Oakland area.
We stayed in Oakland for about 10 days and skated every single day expect
one when we decided to take BART to walnut creek and ride Mt. Diablo.
After sleeping outside on the Mountain we checked out Riv and took BART
back to our friends place in Oakland.
After a good time in Oakland we took the Amtrak back to Chicago on August
12th.
The big take away... Bring your bike to each town you visit so you can go
where you want when you want. Sometimes, listen to locals. Lastly,
carrying a skateboard while touring adds a lot of extra weight but totally
worth it if you are still a 30+ year old skate rat.

-Joseph

Re: [RBW] SON Rear Light Brightness?

2021-10-29 Thread Mr. Ray
I have the SON28, Edelux 2 and SON rack mounted tail light setup. Tools
required for a simple installation are zip ties (to secure the tail light
wire to your frame), a crimping tool (for the spade and ring connectors
that connect to the Edelux) and a heat gun/lighter (to shrink wrap the
crimped connectors).

As for brightness, my only comparison is with an older SON, Edelux 1 and
B Toplight setup and to my eyes the SON tail light is brighter.
Regardless. for anyone behind you, a steady led tail light is far less
annoying and blinding than a battery operated flashing one.

If you want to save some money, get a B tail light. Either way it's
money well spent.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS Surly Long Haul trucker

2021-10-29 Thread Ryan Nute
I've had a couple 26" LHTs. Fine enough bikes but not the same ride as a
Rivendell.

Re: [RBW] SON Rear Light Brightness?

2021-10-29 Thread Christopher Davis
I have two bikes with dynamos one has a B top light small but the best
solution I’ve found is the B taillight built into my Curana C Lite. I like
the fender solution so much that that the bike with the top lite will get C
Lite fenders simply for the ease and cleanliness.

Re: [RBW] Pick your brains about spoke count?

2021-10-29 Thread Victor Hanson
Ben,

Simplistically, no. There's an art to wheelbuilding don't forget that.
But at your size, think more about rim section, ie: wider rims equal
stronger wheels and better tire distribution. I am not familiar with the
Atlas wheelset, but pay attention to rim width.

Either 32 3x or 36 3x should build good wheels. Don't cheap out on spokes
DT or Wheelsmith db ('cuz they tension up better). Brass nips always.
