[RBW] Re: wheels (135mm spaced rear with freehub) for a Sam Hillborne

2022-06-18 Thread Joe Bernard

Most everything is listed as sold out at Riv at the moment but it's always
worth a call to Rich Lesnik there, he usually has a line on something
that'll work on Rivbikes. If you get lucky it'll ship to Buffalo in time.

2022-06-18 Thread Mark Allen
I had Martin at Hoopdriver build up a dynamo
wheelset for my Sam in late 2019, and he did a fantastic job. Son Delux
front / White Industries rear hub and H+Son Archetype rims. I'm also
confident that the fine folks at Urbane Cyclist
can set you up with something great as well.

Minh, I have a 62cm QB with the brazed-on mid-fork rack mounts and a Mark's
Rack; everything you've described is exactly what I've encountered with a
zip-tied Wald 139. I moved the Wald 139 to a Riv/Nitto Two-Strut Top Rack
on my 1990s Cannondale adventure touring bike (with fork rake/trail
geometry for heavy front loads) and wow what a difference. Case of beer?
 No problem. (Picture

That car battery and watermelon would be easy. Not so on the QB. I've
tried a VO Porteur rack and it didn't improve the "shimmy feeling" you
described. My view (as others have commented) is that what you've got is
about as good as it gets on a QB. Handsome bike pictured there on Pier

Just insulate the taillight connections with tape (or better heat-shrink)
so that the connections don't make contact with each other or the frame.
Then just connect the front light in the normal way and you are ready to go.

If you were running an incandescent bulb headlight, there could be a
concern that the headlight could receive too much voltage with no taillight
wired in. With modern LED headlights, this is not a concern.

i have an older supernova and mine, the wiring for the rear tailight is
hardwired, and i can't see how you would disconnect it short of opening it

[RBW] wheels (135mm spaced rear with freehub) for a Sam Hillborne

2022-06-18 Thread Peter Stock
I have an SH frame I built up but the wheels are crap. the only 135mm
spaced 700c rear I could find with fairly wide rim.
and then a mismatched front.
this bike deserves a decent wheelset.
where do I go looking? what online stores/shops?
there are very few 700c 135mm spaced wheelsets up here in Canada.

Or if anyone has a decent set they would sell me (that would take an 8S
Shimano cassette) let me know.
I'll be driving to Buffalo in the next few weeks to pick up some other bike
gear and so shipping to there would likely make the shipping cost
reasonable

[RBW] Supernova E3 pro2...but dont want to run the rear light?

2022-06-18 Thread 'jinxed' via RBW Owners Bunch
Lighting is one area that completely baffles me. Well, anything involving
electricity for that matter, so I generally rely on those with more
experience lest I end up cooking myself or the electronics.

Here's what I have on hand to work with. SP SV-8 front hub, Supernova E3 2
pro front light, Nitto rack or equivalent, rechargeable rear LED of some
sort. Fork has provisions for internal wiring hub to light, frame has no
considerations.

Most of my riding is during daylight. When I need a light, it will
primarily be off road and for purposes of seeing, not being seen. I have
several extremely capable rechargeable rear lights for use when needed, so
I don't want to permanently route cables to the back of the bike. That
said, the E3 light has dedicated rear wiring I need to deal with. Can the
rear wires be "unplugged" or are they soldered in? I don't want to ruin the
light by clipping them off. I know they're not absolutely needed for the
front to operate since I've never had a rear light attached and it worked
great.

Any better wisdom on dealing with the wiring? Am I better off ditching the
E3 and going with a "simpler" front only model? If that's the case, any
recommendations for something that would suit the need, preferably in
silver?

I may try a Handsome Devil next. Almost down to your price range ($550
or so), with a bit quicker handling than anything listed above.

I've looked at a couple of used Le Tours, but the top tubes seemed very
short on these. Maybe 57cm for a 25" frame? Anyway, something to check.

If you go to groups.google.com
...i.e. https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/eLrTqbEVRJ0 you are
viewing the list on the web (google.groups.com is the URL) as opposed to
clicking on the gmail client app and logging in ...the way you used to do
it. Make sense?

[RBW] Re: Mystery Sound and Broken Chain

2022-06-18 Thread George Schick
Resurrecting this thread briefly to announce that I found the problem (at
least I'm pretty sure anyway). After replacing the broken chain with a
new one not only did the same intermittent problem still occur, but I also
noticed that the chain was having problems when being shifted onto the
next to the smallest cog while it was on the inner chain ring. That should
never be. So, after doing some remedial online research on Sheldon's
website I came across a link for determining proper chain lengths.
Followed the instructions and discovered that my chain was too short. I
had removed enough links on the new one to match the broken one, which was
why the problem still existed. Added a link and everything seems to be
running smoothly. I feel pretty embarrassed. After all these years of
working on bikes I should have known to check that.

Getting back to the problem you are trying to solve: Does your
instinct tell you that there's something broken or incorrect, and that
faulty condition is warning you with sound? -OR- is this sound more of
something you just notice. You feel an expensive bike should be silent
 and
sometimes you hear something, and you'd prefer to hear nothing from your
 expensive bike?

Do you have an instinct on this? There are definitely a lot of
cyclists of a certain age who recall having ridden a silent bicycle back
 in
the day, who now dislike anything newer or more modern on the grounds that
it's no longer silent. Back in the eearly to mid 1990s I was largely a
Campy-guy, purely on the grounds that a Campy drivetrain in that era (8sp
ergo) was silent while pedaling. Shimano definitely shifted better but
Shimano was not as silent "in gear" as Campy was. The pedaling feedback
into my feet was one of fluidity. With Shimano, I felt that the sound and
the feel would constantly remind me I was operating a chain-drive
