Hello, Friends. One week until our SW Michigan Riv Ride! I’d like to
get a headcount so we can reserve tables at the brewery, so please respond
here and let Marc and I know if you will be joining us. Please reply here
or PM me if you’d like to come. And tell us what Riv you’ll be planning to
 ride!

 Once again, the details:

Date: July 16. If we get stormed/rained out, we will reschedule for
 July 30.

 Time: 10 am Eastern time

Where: KalHaven Trailhead 4143 10th St. N Kalamazoo, MI 49009

 Distance: 35 mi, total.

The KalHaven Trail is a historic rail trail that travels through a
wooded area all the way to Lake Michigan. We will be riding from Kalamazoo
to the halfway point, which is Bloomingdale. There we will refresh
ourselves in the town’s quaint little park; you can bring refreshments or
buy them at the little country store across from the park. From there we
will head back to Kalamazoo and rendezvous at Latitude 42, a local brewery
that has a patio so we can eye the bikes and enjoy a meal.

The address for Latitude 42 is:
 6101 W Main St
 Kalamazoo, MI 49009

Hope to see you there! Message here with questions.
 Leah and Marc

What size tires are needed for this trail? My skinnies are 38mm and

The only valid reason I see is extremely Rivendellian: I'm a notorious
saddle height fiddler and the rear facing binder bolt interferes with my
Medium SaddleSack when I stop to adjust it. I'd love to have that bolt on
the front side.

The ETT measurement is done so horizontally, as in perfectly level. That's
why it's called theoretical as it is referring to bikes with sloping and/or
missing top tubes(like a mixte). If you had a carpenters level you could
get it "fairly" accurate for conversational purposes, but just eyeballing
it not really.

Re: [RBW] Introducing the Charlie H Gallop Protovelo

2022-07-15 Thread Abe Gardner
*Tires: *I've got a few hundred miles on my protocharlie ("He may ride
forever 'neath the streets of Boston He's the man who never returned, Poor
Charlie!") and, dare I tempt the flat tire deities, no flats so far. Riding
Schwalbe G-one Allround 700x50mm. Though I do run tubeless sealant in the
tubes. I'd love to try it with 700C x 48 Hatcher Pass tires one day, but
loads of miles/rubber left on the G-one's for now.
*Gravel*: Been into a fair bit of gravel but nothing anyone would call
single track. Not much flex, probably the same as my 56cm double top tube
Sam Hillborne. I'm closer to 250 pounds and still, not flex worries.
Certainly more flexy than my Cheviot, much less flexy than the rosco baby
bike though (with it's unusual geometry it's quite flexy, especially with a
child seat on the back).
*Pedal strikes*: I have had a few pedal scrapes as I lean into sharp, low
speed turns on pavement. Nearly identical to my Sam in this regard.
*Bars*: I'm also on the fence about swapping from Soma Portola (wide,
flared drop bars) to Albatross bars (probably would flip them upside down
to feel more like Albastash bars, just better for my wrists). I'd like to
run regular V-brakes as the short arm v-brakes (85mm) need a bit too fine
an adjustment to keep from rubbing the rims without getting a squishy feel
in the brake levers. That said, those short v-brakes are REALLY strong
(loads of mechanical advantage). Very interested to switch to DRX v-brakes
though. All I need is the time to ride and wrench plus ...
Really like to see you bars up so high - the drops are about level with the
saddle, which seems like the sweet spot to me.

Great pics!
Abe

Re: [RBW] Re: Craigslist (and others) Bikes For Sale: 3

2022-07-15 Thread Brian Turner
James, just a minor observation when I zoomed in. The USB charging port is
positioned on the top of the light, where it would likely be more
vulnerable to letting water in. The Koma instructions tell you to screw the
light into the threaded mounting post so that the port is positioned down.
That way, you can screw it off to recharge it, and screw it back on so that
it will always be in the down position.

That's what I thought Joe, but back when I had asked Will about the Platy

It seems if Riv's phone is busy it just rings once and disconnects rather

Not good or bad in my mind, just inherent in the long top tube designs
 they
have been favoring lately. I will likely end up buying a ROADUNO, and
 had
hoped to put drops on it but based off of what we know so far I'm not

[RBW] FS Surly Big Dummy (medium) w/ extras

2022-07-15 Thread Brian Turner
Although not a Rivendell of course, I'm trying to sell my super-nice cargo
bike in order to finance my current Riv build. Bones' cargo bike thread
earlier made me think there might be some folks here who would possibly be
interested.

Here's a link to the current Craigslist ad. Local pickup ONLY, so if
there's anyone here within driving distance of Central KY and is
interested, please reach out to me. Price is negotiable within reason.

https://lexington.craigslist.org/bik/d/lexington-surly-big-dummy-cargo-bike/7504561538.html

Description:
Very well cared-for, equipped with nice components and a custom-made
Porcelain Rocket frame bag. The cargo bags can be removed, and this Dummy
has the XtraCycle P-racks, which allow you to attach a full set (4) of
pannier bags if you want. I also have the “wide loader” attachments
(included in sale), which allow you to carry bulkier items such as boxes.

Avid mechanical disc brakes & levers
Chris King headset
Dimension trekking bars w/ Ritchey adjustable stem
Origin 8 seatpost
Salsa seat clamp and skewers
Salsa Gordo 36-hole rims w/ Schwalbe Big Apple 26x2.35 tires
Planet Bike fenders
Custom-made frame bag from Porcelain Rocket
VP-59 pedals

[RBW] Re: FS Cargo Bike Stuff

2022-07-15 Thread Matt Beecher
Probably a good idea to show it on a bike, if you can. I did not know what
it was and was curious enough to look it up online. Not sure whether
others would bother. My first thought was that it looked awfully long to
not have any sort of additional wheel...until I saw what it really was.

A suggestion - I think that you need to post a picture of the Leap without
the bags. It isn't very obvious what the frame extension looks like because
it is covered up by the bag.

[RBW] Re: For Sale: Riv Nitto Platrack and Sackville Platsack #2

2022-07-15 Thread WETH

*Yes, I found a second Nitto Platrack and matching Sackville Platsack
combination in inventory! *

*This Platsack was modified by the previous owner, who replaced the snaps
with turnbuckles; this allows for a more secure attachment to the Platrack
in my opinion. Please see updated photos in link below.*

I thank Bill Lindsey for the description below taken from his for sale post
last year. He is a far better writer than I, and I thank him for his
permission to quote his text:

"The Platrack is a Nitto tubular steel platform specifically designed to
bolt to the top of your Marks Rack (M1) or your Mini Front Rack (32F). The
Platrack converts your smaller rack into a much larger platform. The
Platrack has its own pair of auxiliary struts, stiffening and strengthening
the assembly.

The Sackville Platsack is a bag designed specifically to attach to the
Platrack.”

I am including Platrack struts that measure 40 cm long.

$180 shipped for both the Platrack and the bag. (Local sale within 30
minutes of 20895 zip code for $160) I prefer to sell them together as they
belong together. If you are desperate to buy one piece and not the other,
let me know. If I can find a buyer for each half then I might elect to
split them up ($100 shipped for the Rack and struts. $120 shipped for the
Bag.)

Please see photos for condition of items here:

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco Platy!

2022-07-15 Thread Doug H.
I've been riding my Clem L on longish road rides and am tempted by the
Rosco Platy but I don't think it would give me any benefit over my Clem. I
really like the step-through design and after being conscious of it at
first don't even give it a thought now. It is a burly looking bike to me.
Riding over pavement cracks and stop indicators at intersections is no
problem with the wide tires and long wheelbase. These were jarring on my
old Felt road bike with skinny tires but now they hardly even register.
Also, I am well-pleased with the Tosco bars and use the out front portion
about 20% of the time on a long ride to stretch out my back and get good
pedal leverage. I will be tempted by the Roaduno as an n+1 but as of now
I'm satisfied riding the Clem.

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco Platy!

2022-07-15 Thread Leah Peterson
I, for one, can understand Johnny’s affinity for that Clem L. I prefer my
Platys, but only slightly. And you really can’t beat a true step-through. I’m
an advocate for having BOTH.

In any case, I’m glad the Rivendell mixte line continues and that more people
of the male variety are accepting them as legit bikes and not girly townies.
And how fun that we are venturing into new territory with purple paint! I think
the builds on these mixtes will be so interesting. Hopefully the new owners
will be generous with their posts and photos and we will get to see this
limited edition bike doing its thing in the world.

Anyone reading this snag a Rosco Platy yesterday? What did you get? How will
you build it up?

Re: [RBW] Re: Rosco Platy!

2022-07-15 Thread Johnny Alien
I dig them (because I also dig Joe's custom) and I was all on board with
grabbing one when they were supposed to be out in May but with the delays I
wanted something sooner and fell into a Clem L which I am over the moon
about. I think they will sell a touch slower than other models because they
are more utility in visual design and priced higher than expected. Not that
its not a fair price but its certainly easier to sell a stripped down less
fancy Platy for $900-1000 (the original expected price) than $1350.
Congrats to everyone that got one. I was expecting to be on that train but
alas I am not.

I feel like a lot of recent riv designs not only would require a short

good or bad in my mind, just inherent in the long top tube designs they
have been favoring lately. I will likely end up buying a ROADUNO, and had
hoped to put drops on it but based off of what we know so far I'm not sure
I'll be able to without dropping down a size. I don't want to do so from
 an
aesthetic perspective, so risers or swept back bars it'll be!

[RBW] Re: FS 61 cm Atlantis, metallic brown, Waterford built, loaded, $2950 plus packing and shipping

2022-07-15 Thread Jim S.
bump before the weekend. $2850 plus packing and shipping. I'm including
racks, dyno lights, saddle, etc. The frame is a great color, and it's in
great shape. I just have too many bikes. First-world problem, I know.

Those Shimano drop-bar levers are still available! Buy them at rivbike.com,
amazon.com, ebay.com and several other places.

I agree with the sentiment that road bikes look better with calipers on
them. Though I find the long-reach caliper brakes (Tektro R559) to be

 odd
to me. I assume they must be gravel or cyclocross bikes. Maybe Rivendell
should develop some kick-ass long reach caliper brakes.
