Thank you! Yes, tubeless compatible matters. I believe it is increasingly
common to run 38 mm tires tubeless. I mainly have experience with tubeless
in the 2"+ widths.

Re: [RBW] Phil Wood 700c Single Speed Wheelset - 135/100

2022-09-28 Thread 'Eric Norris' via RBW Owners Bunch
FWIW, I used a rear wheel spaced at 135mm for years in a frame spaced at 130mm.
Takes a few seconds more to get the wheel in while you pull the dropouts apart
a couple of mm on each side. No harm to the frame (a Rivendell Road Standard).

I recently switched back to a standard 130mm rear wheel, which fits perfectly
in the frame.

[RBW] Re: my new 2 speed coaster brake Susie

2022-09-28 Thread Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!
Matt, what a treat to read your story and see the bike. (I will echo the
call for more photos of the Susie, please.) I haven’t seen a Susie like
this one, ever, and I really like its quirkiness. I was especially
delighted to read of the Michigan connection - I moved to Michigan in 2021
and have so enjoyed riding here. A bunch of Rivendell riders will gather
for a ride in Grand Rapids October 15th, if you can join us with your
Susie. PM me if you want the details.

I know what it is to get the bike you want exactly, and the childhood
connection is especially meaningful. Thank you for an enjoyable read, and I
hope I get to see your bike in person next month!

Re: [RBW] Re: ISO: New wheelset for Romulus

2022-09-28 Thread Ryan Stanis
FWIW, to second Aaron's suggestion, the Velocity Quill is an improvement on
the A23, as many have found the A23 too easy to dent/flat spot (myself
included). It is a wider rim than the a23, enterprise, or pacenti brevet,
but any road caliper found on a riv shouldn't have issue with it's
width. Maybe overkill if you're staying off rough roads and gravel, but
personally I'd rather spend the extra money for peace of mind. As far as
Velocity hubs, some of them are rebranded Bitex, an industry standard in
prebuilt wheels. Unsure of their QR road models.

VO enterprise rim is NOT tubeless compatible if that is a current or future
concern. VO hubs are easily serviceable, and run for a good many miles. I
have been running a rear VO hub since 2017 in varying frequency of use and
have yet to replace bearings. If you're not trying to future proof your
wheelset, that $400ish price tag from VO is pretty sweet.

Pacenti Brevets has recently shot up in price a good bit. Nice looking
rim, tubeless compatible. Seem to build up with relatively lower than
usual tension on the non drive side rear depending on what hub they're
paired with, and I have received at least one with a flat spot from the
factory. But as the old adage goes, "sh*t happens".

Hope this helps!

2022-09-28 Thread Paul Choi
Bike looks simple and fun. Appreciate the backstory on the Sting Ray. I
have fond memories of riding my orange Raleigh Chopper down the street of
East Lansing MI in 1978. I then switched to BMX racing with a gold FMF
bike. Now I ride a Rosco.
Good times! Enjoy the new Riv. Such a great time to be able to ride these
great bikes.

[RBW] FS: Phil Wood 700c Single Speed Wheelset - 135/100

2022-09-28 Thread Michael Ullmer
I have these posted on ebay, but thought there may be interest to the Riv
Crowd, particularly because it has a 135mm rear spaced hub and wide rims.

Phil Wood 700c Single Speed Wheelset - 135/100 32H Rim Brake.

Front hub is spaced at 100mm

Rear hub is a rare Kiss Off Singlespeed Bolt-on, 135mm spaced

These came on a bike I bought and won't work for my purposes (I need a
120mm spaced hub).

Unknown rims, though they are eyeleted and 22mm wide.

Wheels spin smooth and are straight/true. These came on a bike that was
built up by a local shop here in Minneapolis (One on One). I expect they
built the wheels, but I can't confirm.

$350 plus actual shipping via Bikeflights

Re: [RBW] Re: Do you Rapid Rise? (Share pics and thoughts)

2022-09-28 Thread Pancake
Exactly right Eric, that photo shows the third pulley just disengaged
because it’s in the tallest gear on the cassette and middle chainring. Less
slack in the chain means the chain is pulling the derailer mechanism
forward enough to disengage the third pulley. But when you shift down the
third pulley engages and makes it act like a longer cage derailler, eating
up slack and avoiding chain slap while all the while keeping the lowest
pulleys far off the ground. It’s clever! But Dad needs a read rack and
panniers to make grocery trips easier so the bike will be in my garage
again soon - I’ll take some closer up photos in different positions then.
I do wonder ho/if a significantly larger pulley could do something similar
but that’s above my pay grade.

It's been a while, but I used to buy these unthreaded aluminum spacers in
lengths long enough to cut to exact size as needed. Granted, it's not
clever reuse of readily available bike hardware, but I like the clean look
of it, and you can fashion them into whatever size you need for the
application:

Re: [RBW] Re: Bikes For Sale: Craigslist, ebay, etc. Fall 2022 edition

2022-09-28 Thread Julian Westerhout
As that forest green All Rounder comes with a lot of extras -- front and
rear Nitto Camping racks, Son dynamo front wheel plus original front wheel,
and a pile of parts and accessories I think it is not a bad deal -- the
$3000 is an asking price -- one might do better -- at $2500 that package is
well worth it, IMHO, and at $3000 it is still not that bad -- given that
custom Riv frames are now $5000+ and a Taiwan Riv frameset other than a
Clem is $1700-1900 this not a bottom-feeding bargain, but if were the right
size and someone was looking for a great riding classic Riv this would be
hard to match -- and it looks like it has had very little use.
