[RBW] FS: Phil and Shimano BBs, mirrors

2022-10-28 Thread Joe Bernard
Random parts kicking around that I'm tired of kicking. Everything $25 each
shipped, cheaper if bundled for one shipping price.

Old Phil 68 x 113 BB, English thread, pulled from a used Riv, spins smooth,
comes with new Phil BB tool I bought for it.

New Shimano 68 x 127 BB, English, installed once, was way too long for the
cranks and immediately pulled out of the frame.

Busch + Müller mirrors, one wraps the bar, one is bar-end.

[RBW] Sizing question about a pair of Honjo Smooth 74 silver metal fenders

2022-10-28 Thread Kim Hetzel
I have a sizing question about a pair of Honjo Smooth 74 silver metal
fenders with my 59cm Clem Smith Jr. "L" bike. I have not yet purchased
these fenders with a lot of caution. I do not want to discover that they
are the wrong size or do not fit.

https://www.sim.works/collections/fenders-simworks-by-honjo/products/simworks-by-honjo-smooth-74?variant=30981463474228

>From the text description about these fenders, the maximum clearance is
58mm or 2.28" at best. I am currently running Schwalbe Rapid Rob 29"x
2.25". These fenders would seem to be the right ones.

Looking for conformation that these fenders will be the best choice with
the tires that I am running now. I would rather not purchase new tires, if
possible.

Almost done with my upgrading my Clem.

Received in the mail today, my new brass bell from Lion Bellworks. It sure
is the sweetest sounding bell I have ever owned. Highly recommend !

Thank-you,
Kim Hetzel

Looks pretty good! I wonder it's made of? It looks very similar to the hemp

AFAIK RBW had stated in the newsletter that they do not want to open the
box just to check it sicne they need to ship it in another box. One can
see their logic, especially since they are handling many more frames than 5
years ago, and can't/don't have the time to check them or feel the level of
service they provided in the past is just unattainable now,

2022-10-28 Thread Collin A
Folks, final bump (and price adjustments) to avoid excessive tinned
meats...The 600 derailleur and kickstand are sold, so these are the
remaining items.

Prices *now include shipping* (except the frame, but I've got a box ready
to go!).

Photos: https://photos.app.goo.gl/CD6PdMnnTVxZiEGk9

   - SR Laprade 27.0 flutted seatpost. Scratches below the flutes, but
   otherwise pretty clean -* $30*
   - Shimano BR451 and 550 mid-reach brakes (1 bikes worth). The front is
older, but the rear is only a year old. Works great - *$40*
   - Tektro FL750 brake levers for 22.2 bars - this uses road brake cables,
   not mtn, FYI - *$30*
   - 1986 Trek 300 frame/fork 21" - its a commuter and it shows, but the
bones on this thing are still good. Little baby dent on the top tube. Can
fit 650x42 with fenders if you are looking for a lively roady 650b
conversion. Otherwise can fit 700x38 with mid-reach calipers (or 700x32
   with fenders) - *$50 + shipping (I have a frame box 40x30x7 with ample
   packing materials).*
   - Bontrager R3 700x32 tanwall (brown) and tubeless compatible (folding,
310g each). Mostly gravel miles on these weirdly enough. Setup tubeless,
and one tire has a plug in it, but lots of life left - *$30*
   - Vittoria rubino pro 700x30 tubeless compatible (folding, 320g each).
Couple hundred miles on these and setup tubeless, but not plugs, etc.
   *$20*
   - Schwalbe g-one all-round 650x42 evos, tubless, folding bead (420g
each)...bought in 2019 and used for maybe 10 miles. I trimmed knobs on one
side of the tire because the carcass is a little wobbly. Never setup
   tubeless -* $40*
   - Schwalbe g-one all-round 650x55 evo, setup tubeless, folding bead
(650g)...again used on a bike now sold. One tire - *$30*

Happy Friday!

Also, if you buy the Platsack (Platrack -sp?) bag, I’ll throw in the little
bag that goes with the large Sackville saddlebag. Used two or three times
only. Same olive color.

[RBW] FS: RARE: Platsack bag and Nitto rack $150 plus shipping, also Wiggy's sleeping bag

2022-10-28 Thread Ana Candela
Hi there,

This is a rare Sackville bag that goes with its special rack. I bought it
used from fellow list member Bill Lindsay a year ago. I unfortunately did
not use it even once (I did not even take the bubblewrap out, and it's
still in the same box Bill shipped it!), but I can say I kept good custody
of it ;) It is in great condition as Bill took good care of it. I'm
leaving town Tuesday, so must sell before Sunday, so I can ship Monday. I
paid $175 plus shipping. Asking $150 plus shipping, but open to offers.

I also have a Wiggy's sleeping bag that Riv used to sell. I used it a few
times as a throw blanket but never took it camping. Comes with bag. Paid
$125. Asking $60 plus shipping.

Photos to follow...

Thanks for looking!

rise. Essentially an Alba-size porteur.

Anyone have any suggestions? The Choco bars are close but not quite flat.

Re: [RBW] Re: Clemuno Jr

2022-10-28 Thread Joe Mullins
As someone who owns a Crust Single Speed Breakaway Lightning Bolt this makes me happy. I’ve been eyeing the Homer but I have a Sam which is too similar. I find myself not riding the Crust very much and have been toying with the idea of selling it. It originally had noodle bars and now has albatross bars which I love since it puts me more upright but not so much on that low trail bike. Feels too squirrelly when holding the back of the bars. Feels better with a bag on the front. Handled great with drops and a bag but after riding my Sam with albatross bars and realizing that drops do nothing for me except make me uncomfortable, I sold all my drop bars. I could almost justify a swap to a Roaduno now. I want a color besides green and purple though. I’d love something along the lines of the last batch of Homer blue since blue is my favorite color. Joe in Los AngelesOn Oct 28, 2022, at 9:57 AM, Bill Lindsay wrote:Crust Single Speed Lightning Bolts are still available in all sizes.  With a level top tube, short chainstays and low-trail front end, it's not a Rivendell.  It is au courant with a Riv-adjacent niche.  It takes 584x48 with no issue.  Here's mine:

2022-10-28 Thread J J
The Sam is beautiful!

This yellow is among my top very favorite colors on a Rivendell. It somehow
feels both classic and modern at the same time.

Thanks for the photos.

[RBW] Re: Clemuno Jr

2022-10-28 Thread Brian Forsee
I like the sound of that from a ride quality/tubing perspective, but not
from a tire clearance perspective. I really was looking forward to a SS
commuter that could take 700x55's or 45-50's w/ a fender. Also don't love
the switch to caliper brakes, although the reintroduction of the Paul's
make that not as big of an issue for me.

I would never trust that a frame that had been shipped still has the
derailleur hanger aligned. Derailleur hangers get bumped out of alignment
all the time even in normal use. Even a Park hanger tool isn't that
expensive - about the same price as a mid-grade derailleur, lower priced
tools are about the same as an Altus derailleur. One of those tools that I
can't live without now that I have one.

this year. There are lots of vendors displaying all kinds of cycling
related stuff: bike makers of all kinds, bag and luggage makers, tool
makers and anything else you can think of. There are food, beer and coffee
 vendors as well.

Russ's video from PBE a few years ago
  gives a pretty good idea
 of the flow of things.

I found it helpful to do a quick surface walk around all the booths and
displays without stopping, then returning to check out booths that caught
my attention. There is no end of stuff to dive into and people to chat
 with.

Things I'd check out this year: Rivendell, Paul Component, King Cage,
Silca, Chapman Cycles, Fat Chance, Sal's Bikes, Jubilee Mfg, Breadwinner,
Merry Sales, White Ind, Velocity, Sinewave. Whoever has good decaf

 have custom swag.

I didn't make it to any of the talks but there are always a few I wish

The bike valet is fun and you'll see lots of great bikes and nice
people who have some overlapping interests. On my way there I got several
shout outs for my Appaloosa from strangers passing by. Plus, the people

A few things that were fun last year:

Riv — James, Vince and Will were there with three demo bikes. Small

[RBW] A Few Thoughts About FS posts

2022-10-28 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Hey there -

Just slipping on my admin cap because I'm noticing a trend:

There has been an increase in "no-price" For Sale posts which have ended up
in the queue. While I don't feel they are made in anything other than good
faith, it potentially changes the nature of this group to an auction house.
There are other websites which do that.

I've also noticed a number of Sale listing attempts (again, caught in the
review queue as they are from newer members (or those who never posted
before) for pretty general gear. That's much more of a grey area, as we all
end up with extra bike stuff. But there have been a number of "swap meet"
style posts that get pretty broad, or are even introduced with "I've
cross-posted this into..."

For the second condition, I'll admit more leeway for those who share images
and ride reports and the things that make this a valuable place.

For the first issue, moving forward if something is listed for sale without
a clear asking price and lands in the queue, I'm going to not pass it
through. And might ask non-moderated posters to specify a price if a
listing is not clear.

For reference - in this last batch of ~20 posts which landed in moderation,
there were 6 which had no-price-gimmee-an-offer text.

Thanks!

Jim / list admin

Their latest newsletter notes that they open up the box to put in more
packing materials (and possibly the seatpost) before repacking it and
shipping it. Most bike shops should have a frame alignment table, though
around here the shops are pretty impacted as well so it might take a while.

Cannot use a kickstand when it is windy even on a normal bike, doubly so
when the ground is not level. When leaning a bike against something,
stopping it from rolling is very useful.

[RBW] Re: Clemuno Jr

2022-10-28 Thread Jake Kutchins
I stopped by Riv and talked to Will last week. He said they're redesigning
the Roaduno to be more of a Homer single speed (HomerUno doesn't sound
quite right...) with caliper brakes rather than the "ClemUno" design they
shared that had v-brakes. He said he liked the redesigned model slightly
more. I tried to hide my disappointment for the ClemUno that wasn't.

Re: [RBW] Fender size for a Rambouiller

2022-10-28 Thread Patrick Moore
Agree that 32s + fenders worked fine. My setup was much like yours,
and worked fine with SKS Longboards and 622X1.35" (32 mm actual) Kojaks;
Open Pros, too. Sure, a bit more space would have been desirable, but there
was sufficient clearance at the tight points at crown and brake bridge, and
I never had any problems. I'd not want to ride like this off road, but mine
at least was a pavement bike.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fender size for a Rambouiller

That depend on the model. My blue Ram took 1.35” — 32 mm actual — tires under
fenders. Close fit but entirely acceptable; no rubbing or other problems. 29 mm
Paris Roubaix tires had very ample clearance.

Re: [RBW] Your preferred handlebar for longer rides

2022-10-28 Thread Patrick Moore
I don't have a bar to recommend, but I do recommend a grip. Over decades of
trial and error, I've found that all bars that are not standard,
non-anatomical drop bars hurt my sensitive left palm. But when installed a
MAP Ahearne bar in 2021 I also installed Ergon anatomical grips and between
those and cutting 8" total off the ends of the bar I have been surprised
and very pleased at how comfortable the setup is. I still think of
replacing it with a wide drop bar, but the Ergons and the shortened bar
leave my left palm alone on rides up to 15 miles, and even cut down give
better control on sketchy, slanted, narrow and bumpy ditchside paths than
drops.

Re: [RBW] Who is getting a Platypus?

2022-10-28 Thread 'Scott Luly' via RBW Owners Bunch
 Joe:
I talked to Riv earlier this week about purchasing an Atlantis and posed a few
questions about F/F prep. I'm not here to make a blanket statement about how
all F/F are handled before they depart Riv, but I was told they receive the
Atlantis F/F with headset already installed and that a F/F I purchase would not
have the hanger checked/aligned before sent to me. My "guess" is they may not
even unpack the F/F when they receive it. There wouldn't be any reason for them
to open it up, if nothing is to be done on F/F. Maybe they are so busy it's
easier to just place a new shipping label on the box and out it goes. I live in
rural Montana and am a little bummed I have to travel a good distance just to
ensure hanger is properly aligned after spending $1750 on a new baby. And I
would doubt the threads are chased.
Nothing whatsoever against Riv, just an observation. Seems it should be part of
the frame making process to quickly verify proper hanger position somewhere
between frame build completion and paint. I'm going to travel and pay to have
it done, anyways.

Re: [RBW] Re: Susie / Gus questions

2022-10-28 Thread Nick Shoemaker
Just went full Hilli with my Clem, replacing some 2.25 G-One Allrounds with
a 2.6 Mezcal (actual 2.55) in back and a 2.6 Nobby Nic (actual 2.4) in the
front. Might as well be a new bike - can’t say enough good things about the
Clem! Rode some technical singletrack today and had a blast! Some
observations that may be helpful to others thinking of going full MTB with
their Hillies:

-Clutch derailleur is going on asap! Dropped my chain thrice on chunky
decents. In this context I think clutch easily trumps rapidrise

-Clem BB is lower than I’m used to (coming from FS 26”), even with the big
2.6 tires. Not a showstopper, but had more pedal strikes than I’m used to.

-Alba/dirt drop combo was surprisingly great; no slippage to report, but I
will probably tilt them down a bit next time to take some pressure off my
wrists; I’m going to try Soma Ospreys next, but the swept back position
combined with the long chainstays was incredibly confidence-inspiring. I
let loose on a downhill jump line and the bike never came close to bucking
me or forcing me airborne. Was still able to book it :)

-Big tires fit! The Mezcal 2.6 is huge. Probably too big for the rear
(maybe), but it doesn’t rub on my Cliffhanger with a tube. No chain rub
either using the new Riv 7s cassette. The Schwalbe 2.6 is way smaller,
seems par for the course with Schwalbes though. Don’t give up on your Clem
until you’ve maxed out the tires and dropped the pressure to 20ish or less!

[RBW] Re: Betty Foy Sizing & Search

2022-10-28 Thread Hoch in ut
My wife is 5’6” with a 79cm PBH and rides a 52.
Size is perfect with 110mm stem and Albatross bars. I’d say your wife would
fit on it just fine. Especially with a shorter stem and if needed, bars
that swept back more (ie Bosco).

Best of luck.

Well, I just placed an order for a 60cm - my first Riv! Ordered 65cm Toscos
with the frame and a Jim 13-34t cassette.

I have a bit of a head start on some of the other parts but am still
working out some details for the build.

Excited to join the Platy bus! (Platy wagon?)
