Sorry to hear that Jay. I've been finding that drivers are getting worse
and worse every year - less patient, more distracted, more aggressive.
Plus, cars keep getting bigger and bigger as is safety of people outside
the vehicle isn't even a consideration (what the heck, FMVSS??). I have
I've owned two Schwinn High Sierras with rollercam brakes, both were the
two-tone brown models, 1985 (I'm pretty sure), different sizes. When I was
restoring them I kind of nerded out on the brakes, and raided our local
bike co-op and bought their whole box of rollercam brakes/parts for I think
And sold. Thanks!

Hi all:
I live in car-centric, crowded, northeastern NJ. I joined a gym two towns
over and ride my bike to the gym, about 3.5 miles each way. I take the
least busiest streets possible, but unfortunately, I need to ride through a
semi-busy, though traffic-lit intersection.
In my last 12 trips
I'm out of town pretty much the whole first half of January but would love
to join a ride soon. I hope you all have a great time on the 1st! Also,
related to this, do any Peninsula folks have a shop they receommend? Palo
Alto Cyclery is the only place I've found that carries anything I'm
Also, does the "megarange" setup shift well? I can imagine that being
perfect for my situation. I could swap the 27 for a 32.

Thanks all,
I appreciate the thoughts. I agree with the 48x11 being minimally useful. I
have found it only useful for standing and "sprinting" sometimes on long
flat rides.
Going to try building a 12-27 and see where that gets me.

How much do you use the 48x11? It’s a pretty high gear, but you may prefer
a lower cadence than many others. If so, I’ll be the contrarian and suggest
an 11-23 9 speed. I currently use a 24-36-46 with an 11-23 9 speed on my
Riv in hilly Silicon Valley, and spend a lot of time in the middle
I still have several bikes with freewheels and I really love the
"MegaRange" 7 speed freewheels that Rivendell occasionally has in stock.
14-16-18-20-22-24-34. The 14-24 is a close ratio 6 speed and the 34 is the
emergency granny. Plus the 135mm 7 speed freewheel hubs have almost no
spoke
With apologies, I've got a comment on roller cam brakes relevant to the
OP. I worked at a Schwinn shop those days and assembled many many new
bikes. I think roller cam brakes are really cool and work well if the
posts are lined up with one another. Unlike pretty much any other post
mount
Great pics, Luke and John!
