More parts from the bin. I found some mates for some orphan shifters I had

I use Pirateship for shipping which has been very reasonable.

[RBW] Re: REVISED WTB MUSA Atlantis 59 (650B) or Hunqapillar 56 (650B)

2023-01-25 Thread dougP
Bob:

If you prefer smaller wheels, have you considered a 56cm Toyo Atlantis?
They used 26" wheels. I'm 5'10" & have a 58cm. I've also comfortably
ridden a 56. According to Rivendell's sizing chart, at my height & PBH
(84-85), I'm right on the cusp for either size. You can always make a bike
slightly bigger with stems & seat posts if it feels slightly small.

Re: [RBW] Lambda Add-ons

2023-01-25 Thread Garth
The wings ought to work just fine on the non-monarch models as the only
difference, as far as I'm aware, is the addition of the pins from the
factory rather than diy. The construction of the pedal appears the same,
and it would be silly to change it.

I never gave these a second though as-is because they're very narrow, not
for large feet with shoe soles that are 4-3/4" wide. I'm curious what the
overall width and length of the platform with the wings installed is, and
so I'll have to Riv to find that out. I mean, it would make too much sense
to simply measure it and post it on the sales page sigh . laughter
..but that all makes sense . nonsense will never make sense.

Related story from way back when: I made my own and made a youtube about
it. This was back in 2011, it looks like. Here is the
link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wo0YlOqqISs

My late father made some tooling for a batch-fabrication setup and we made
and sold ~10 sets. That may have been in 2013 or so. I inherited that
tooling after he died, but the process needed a lot of tweaking, so I ended
up decommissioning the tooling he made. I think it would have been a good
job for a laser or water-jet cutting shop.

[RBW] Re: New build: 1985 Bridgestone MB-2

2023-01-25 Thread JohnS
Eric and Greg,

Both are excellent builds! Well done. Any chance we'll see either of them
featured on The Radavist, Reader's Rides???

I would like to see a frame overlay of Eric's MB-2 and my '82 Stumpjumper.
Looks like they have very similar geometries and long wheelbases.

[RBW] Re: REVISED WTB MUSA Atlantis 59 (650B) or Hunqapillar 56 (650B)

2023-01-25 Thread Bob
I have been reminded recently of my preference for smaller wheels in many
situations, so I'm revising my query of a dozen days ago.

Still curious to know if anyone here has a 59 cm 650B Atlantis
(Waterford-built, as in 2016 RBW geometry charts). As an alternative, I'd
also be interested in a 56 cm 650B Hunqapillar of similar vintage.

If you have one of these that you'd like to move, please contact me
off-list. Thank you.

I've never ridden one of these frames but olde Tall Paul brought one along
for our overnighter back in the fall.

The Blue Lug galleries are always a great place to draw inspiration, such
clean and well-appointed bikes and their Rivendell builds are some of the
best around!

clearance but if a 170 is comfortable I think the bike is high enough to
pedal through anything these bikes can pedal through. I’m still getting
used to the Susie as a mountain bike really. Chunky climbs are tough for

because if I get off the seat at all, instant loss of traction. Pedal
strikes hasn’t been an issue at all though.

[RBW] Re: New build: 1985 Bridgestone MB-2

2023-01-25 Thread Eric Marth
Greg — The house paint on your MB-2 reminds me of an MB-3 I picked up at
the end of 2021. Mine was in much worse shape overall. And I paid too much
for it. The tires wouldn't hold air, the brakes and shifters didn't work,
chain was rusted and, as I later found out, the steerer tube was bent and
the fork crown was *twisted*. There was silver spray paint on the
handlebars, brake levers and overspray on the head tube. There was black
spray paint on the rear rack and overspray on the rear cable hanger. What a
mess.

Yours looks great in both iterations. Nice job blasting it and on the
repaint. It looks great with all the clean and vintage parts and I'm sure
it's tons of fun to ride. How did you get all that stack in the headset? On
the '85s I've worked on there is room for a super low stack headset and
zero spacers.

Stephen — Thanks for checking it out, that was definitely part of the build
I wanted to share with people as I'd never seen it done myself. Working on
the steel wall sounds fun, I was thinking a little bit about Richard
Serra's sculptures when I was coming up with the patina colors I wanted.

The ride is good so far and feels different than my other bikes. Drops,
smaller frame, longer wheelbase and lower trail than my Hillborne make it
feel planted, nice on the descents, more reactive up front and it sometimes
feels like I can lay down more power. I'm getting used to the shapes of the
brake levers, the short ramps on the new bars and shifting (every
mech/shifter combo is a little different). I still need to take it out for
a long ride.

Enjoy your next build!
