XT m750 brake shifter combo for v-brake ($250)

XTR m970 brake shifter combo for v-brake ($350)

Brooks springed saddle OLD LOGO/BADGE ($140)

These three go together and were certified by a shimano rep for

caveat: must be a 1x system. shifters are technically a 2/3x11, and that's
the only reason it's not listed as compatible on the chart. save the left

Re: [RBW] Re: How do I know when a saddle fits?

2024-03-30 Thread ascpgh
Emily, I have dealt with roughly your sort of physiological dimensioning my
whole riding life and currently have three variations of coping, each with
saddles that bear varying results. Those results have inseparable
connection to how well each of the bikes they are on fits me.

My commuter is a stock Surly Disc Trucker "box bike". I added a Brooks
B-17, pedals , Nitto RM 013 handlebar, dyno hub/ lights and a shorter a
stem. The frame size that produced the best reach to the handlebars
required a long extension of the seat post and would have required a
pretty high angle stem for those bars to be level with the seat, my comfort
zone, and would also need significant setback dimension of the seat post
head. The frame size that gives the best pedaling position requires a short
stem to keep me from reaching, sort of. I still feel like I reach for the
bars on that bike and do not ride it more than 20 miles. Even on the bigger
size I find my legs drive me to slide back on the seat, onto the cantle
(that metal thing) for many climbs before I pedal out of the saddle. Lots
of compromises but it's my 14 hour lock up bike.

My Rivendell Rambouillet was the best stock bike fit to my body I'd ever
experienced and prevented me from going custom. Grant envisioned it as a
long hours in the saddle sporty/light touring bike in the French
audax/randonnour-inspired design for comfort over hours of riding. Shorter
top tube than seat tube, with 2° upslope and 2 cm extended top head tube
lug all conspired to provide this. It all conspires to fitting me well. It
was a stock build kit from Riv with the B-17, RM 013 bars, I added the
fenders, and changed the derailleurs, shifters and brakes. I do pedal from
the saddle quite a bit more than others in groups before getting out of it
and standing for hills. I still find myself sliding back on the seat for a
rearward position to get some pushing forward on the pedal strokes when
going uphill. That puts me on that cantle again, less than on the commuter
but with the bars in more comfortable reach.

I finally did go custom to for the sort of riding I have available and
enjoy from my front door. I've refined what I look for in saddles,
acknowledging that I do stay on the saddle across more terrain than others,
scooting rearward for that pushing bit where others pop up, pedaling out of
their saddles. That fore and aft position range has made me a connoisseur
of saddle tops that have a platform of surface wide enough for my sit bones
but also retaining that in the longitudal dimension of my back and forth
positioning. I want that platform to be level and I don't want extra
material rubbing my legs.

I am using a Rivet Pearl with cut out on my custom bike. The cut out lets
the centerline of the leather "hammock" between the nose and cantle without
the same amount of weight my sit bones applied to those spots that breaks
in the points where they do bear weight. Without the cut out, that leather
remains a linear high ridge from front to back where the less skeletal
portions of my rear end are perched. I thought I had picked perfectly when
I chose the Rivet Diablo but after three months' riding and several
centuries everything was breaking in nicely except for that ridge line down
the center and it was creating discomfort. They were quick to respond to my
issue and sent the the cut out version of the Pearl which has been perfect
ever since.

Hope this is of some help to your situation.

[RBW] Different tire size front and rear.?

2024-03-30 Thread Bernard Duhon

Gang,
In my quest for fitting the largest tires my frames will take, I have put a
larger tire on the front 38 mm of my 700 C and 35mm in the rear.

On my 650 B conversion of a 700 C bike I have a 42 mm in the front and a 38 mm
in the rear.

The larger tire is 3.5 mm taller than the smaller tire on an unweighted bike
I suspect the lower tire pressures would result in an even smaller difference
when I ride the bike.

In any event I have noticed little difference.

Am I missing something here?

Bernard

[RBW] ISO: 10-speed spacers

2024-03-30 Thread Patrick Moore
Welp, the otherwise very competent LBS that built my new Oracle Ridge
wheelset flubbed my special order of a dozen 10-sp Shimano spacers. I stole
the spacers from the older, Soma slick wheelset, but I'd like to find at
least 9 and up to a dozen 10 sp spacers. A second LBS I checked with just
now doesn't carry loose spacers, at least, unless you can find them in an
 ods-and-ends bin.

Does anyone have spares, or perhaps a worn out or otherwise unwanted 10 sp
cassette? They measure IIRC about 1.6 mm.

Thanks. Happy to buy, trade, or accept charity.

Re: [RBW] Re: tektro 559 left-right adjustment screw

2024-03-30 Thread George Schick
LOL, indeed! Shimano SP brakes have a small notch on the brake arm closest
to the fork crown so you can center it before tightening the brake mounting
bolt. Looking at the Tektro brakes on one of my bikes, it has no such mark
- so you have to clamp the brake arms together to get them as close as
possible to even before tightening. That adjustment set screw is just
there for minor tweaks in the final adjustments. Sounds like the brakes on
that bike were mounted and tightened way too unevenly before any set screw
adjustment was done.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-30 Thread scott minor

I've been happy with a 120mm lugged stem w Orthos on my 62cm Atlantis.
Sometimes when I'm jumping on the bike quickly I get the feeling my bars
just slipped downward but actually they just flexed! So the stem is
grabbing pretty well to not slip in this scenario. The stem has pronounced
rigidity as well so the flex is limited to the bars. I'd think the Ritchey
force would behave the same way, which in my view is a pretty nice balance
when it comes to Orthos.

Hey all, I've got some Ortho Bars in my cart and looking for stem
advice from those who use this bar. Obv there are multiple fit and frame
factors that play into something like this, but curious what people are
generally going with. Here are the options I'm deciding between:

 - Faceplater 110mm
 - Faceplater 135mm
 - Tallux 12cm

Will the 110 Faceplater be too short?

[RBW] Re: Silver shifters, v1 vs. v2

2024-03-30 Thread ian m
I have completely disassembled and reassembled more than a couple times,
both intentionally and un. I have run my set on both the downtube and
bar-ends on more than one bike, and my wife has a set on the bar-ends of
her Hillborne. We have broken so many plastic washers trying to keep them
from slipping that I have multiple back-up bags.

On checking the Riv product page now it looks like the complete shifters
come with a "new and improved" plastic washer that isn't available
separately. Can anyone speak to an improved user experience? I have the
older L/R version rather than the newer X/O version also.

I do think these shift fantastically and are in every way superior to the
Sunrace shifters I used previously, it's only the slippage that grinds my
gears.

Re: [RBW] Re: Ron's Ortho... stem question

2024-03-30 Thread Dan
Chris, can I ask how this ended up working for you? If so, what shim did
you use?

I've set up my Appaloosa with the Orthos and a 120mm VO single-bolt 26.0mm
stem.
The comfort and control is FANTASTIC, but I can make the bars slip if I
push down on them hard. So far it hasn't happened while riding, but it
makes me feel a little uneasy that it might be possible.

I'm wondering if I need to go for a 31.8mm Nitto faceplater or, *gasp*, a
threadless adapter and threadless stem :S
