[RBW] Any recommendations on a Atlantis wannabe?

2014-06-24 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I own an Atlantis and it has been my favorite bike, ever. I bought the
frame new in '99 or so and it has been my main transportation since then. I
love the fit and am trying to find an inexpensive frame, such as an old
chromoly Mt. Bike frame, that has close to the same geometry for my
girlfriend. I am hoping the tribe has some suggestions?

Jones bars. He is in Oregon and makes some very cool bikes. I run the bars
on my Ibis HD. (Wood chippers on my Atlantis) The bars are very nice,
although a little heavy but give lots or room for your hands to roam and a
huge area to put lights, GPS, bells etc.

[RBW] Re: Crane bell metals and quick reviews. Forget frame metals discussion. Lets talk bells!

2014-07-27 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Spurcycle makes the best bell I have found. It is really nice, however it
does not have quite the classic look as a brass bell. It is stunning in
it's perfection and tooling. I have one on my Atlantis and have ordered
another for my mountain bike. Expensive for a bell, but worth it.

I have been wanting a silver one to match my silver components on my
Rivbikes. Here is what I discovered.

 *The brass goes :* blnnng(sssiaaarrrnnnggg)
(rolling overtones in parenths) Crystal clear sonorous sound. Complex
overtones. Low note, trolley sounding bell. I love the sound. The brass is
beautiful and a rich looking color.

*The Copper goes:* Dng. Not much in the way of overtones.
Fundamental tone. Crystal clear and also nice. Higher tone if I remember
than the brass. But the color is dull and not as pretty as pictured on
 websites.

*The aluminium goes :* Plunk. Dull, muffled tone, like someone stuffed it
with felt or something. I even looked inside to see if anything was
dampening the sound. All three in stock were devoid of packaging material
and were plunky toned. No packing in the dome. The silver color is dull and
 flat.

So I guess I like the brass best. It sounds best to my ears, and is cool
when it ages and gets all patina-ed up.

I have one from RBW already and hope to get another in the next order.
What would really be great is a *real* 1 headset spacer hammer bell.

*Which of the crane suzu hammer striker bell metals do you like best?*

When I had my frame powder coated, I called Riv up for frame decals, but
the only ones they could provide are the fragile decals that need a clear

custom frame decals that you can design yourself. I have forgotten the name

2014-08-07 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
l have had 3 back surgeries and 3 carpal tunnel / elbow surgeries so I have
to run my bars (Salsa Woodchippers) HIGH. I use a Nitto Dirt Drop stem
(10cm) at max extension (It took a little modification of the stem to allow
the tight bends of the Woodchipper to fit through). So far my Atlantis is
the only bike I can ride without severe numbness and pain in my hands. The
bottom of the drops is about an inch lower than the seat.
On my Ibis HD, I am running Jones bars with a real high stem and it isn't
working. I think I will end up putting drop bars on it too.

I ordered a set of Resurrectio stickers. They sent me the not tough ones

tough ones that go over the clear coat. As I was applying the seat tube
sticker it shattered. I contacted Riv, and they said since I had already
applied it they couldn't send me new ones. The problem I have is that you
can't tell what the stickers are as they have paper on both sides of the
stickers. It was their fault that they sent me the wrong ones and they
won't fix it. Crappy customer service. I am not happy. $18.00 dollars for
stickers to start with is a little ridiculous. I will make my own head

[RBW] Re: Nitto big front rack q / hello

2014-11-09 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hunquapiller is nice! I bought a New Nitto Front Rack and just got done
installing it. P-clamps are a pain but they are the best solution overall.
Only one bolt on each side. Less flex than having long arms. Lighter,
stiffer, cleaner look etc. When I had my Atlantis repainted I had some
barrel braze ons attached to the fork in the standard mid fork position. It
bugs me that I have a braze on 1.25 inches from the fork slot that I can't
use. I am extremely anal and fastidious on my bike set up and if I was you,
I'd go with the P-clamps

I've seen posts where the big front rack has been attached without
p-clamps. For some reason, those methods didn't really work for me. I ended
up attaching the rack without the clamps but somewhat differently than I've
seen before. Lower fork eyelets attached to rack via struts attached to the
 inside of the fork.
 So here are my questions:

Is it a problem to attach the struts to the inside of the fork (about 1cm
of clearance on each side between bolt and spoke)?

Is it an issue that the points of connection to the fork are the dropout
eyelets and the lower mid-fork mounts? Would it be more stable with the
second attachment to the higher mounts? Am I stressing anything too much?
 Etc etc etc.

Pics should be attached. Thanks in advance

[RBW] Re: Wheel Stabilizer or no?

2014-11-13 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Cecily, I read your post and designed a simple contraption for my Atlantis.
I recently bought a Nitto big front rack from Riv and it flops! It was
easy to make. I had a frame bag that I made, so I used that to anchor and
store the elastic backed strap when not in use. Mine is anchored on one
end, but you could make it with hooks on each end. The first one I made was
just a cord with hooks. I found it tangled in my bike bag, so I sewed a
strap to stretched out, weak elastic. It shrinks it in half when not
attached, less tangles. Watch the video attached all the way until it stops
for a demo. It's cheap, fast, light and unbreakable. Perfect for touring
and daily use. We must banish wheel flop!

I met an ex-employee of Rivendell, and we talked a bit. I bought my
Atlantis in '98 or so. He said, You have one of the good ones. The newer
Atlantis is made from heavier, cheaper tube sets. I love my Atlantis.
Would I love a new one as much? Probably. Would I buy a new Atlantis?
Maybe.

I have always run a suspension seat past since my first back surgery. The
small hits take a toll. A suspension seatpost saves energy too, as you
don't have to unweight the seat constantly to absorb shock. I have bought

[RBW] Re: Bar Ends vs Paul Thumbies? Anyone tried both?

2015-02-13 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have run both on drop bars. I ran the thumbies up top, close to the stem.
Thumbies work well and they are protected from falls. At the time I also
ran interrupter levers. I didn't bang my knee on the shifters and it worked
well. I prefer the bar end shifters just a smidge. They are quicker to
access. To shift the thumbies, you need to have your hands on the bar tops.

The new quick release basket I made works flawlessly, better than the first

[RBW] Re: Paul Brakes -- Wow!

2015-02-20 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I have to jump in here.. I have always been taught and discovered on my
own, that the straddle cable should be as close to perpendicular, or at 90
degrees, to the center of the brake pad lever *when it hits the rim*. You
can do this experiment on your own. Get a stick. Tie a string to it. Lay
the stick on the ground and lift the string. Lift perpendicularly and then
from different acute angles, inline with the stick. If you lift from acute
angles, the stick slides, which is energy wasted. If you set up your brakes
with a too short straddle cable, you lose feel and the leverage forces
change as you apply the brakes. Starts out soft and weak, and increases as
you apply the brakes because the angle gets closer to 90 degrees. Over 90
degrees, and you get weak brakes. The brake arm is just a lever. It works
best, like all levers if you lift from the end at 90 degrees. The brake arm
pivot placement is basic too. Long arm on the straddle cable side, shorter
arm on the rim side. It does not matter at all when it comes to straddle
cable length. The only lever the straddle cable acts on is the long side.
The distance between the pivot and rim, and pivot and straddle cable angle
is fixed and you can't change it. After 20 years plus of running
cantilevers and being a mechanic for YETI cycles back in the heyday, a shop
manager and mechanic, I finally gave up. I run V-brakes now, which are
much more powerful, especially with long Cool Stop salmon pads. Braking is
at near disc power. I can easily do a nose wheelie, using brake power
alone. The feel is so good, I can anti-lock brake the front. Apply, feel it
start to slide, let loose and rebrake. The only thing I don't like and it
is very minor, is the hood shape on the Cane Creek Road V-brake levers.
There is far more clearance with panniers and I don't poke my calf
anymore. Everyone here loves their cantilevers. They are prettier and match
the aesthetic of Rivendell. I get that, but for me the superiority of
V-brakes has become beautiful in itself.

On Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 7:33:03 PM UTC-8, ted wrote:

 Deacon,

The thing is, that definitely does not increase the leverage.

The the vertical component of the tension in the straddle cable is equal
to the tension in the brake cable (well half on each side).
Lengthening the straddle cable reduces the tension in it as well as
changing the angle at which it meets the brake arm. The vertical component
of the tension stays the same, and the horizontal component is decreased.
The net result is less torque around the brake post for a given force on
 the brake lever.
For a wide profile brake like the 720, where the end of the arm is barely
above the pivot, the decrease in leverage is relatively small. But it is a
decrease, not an increase. To get an increase in leverage by lengthening
the straddle cable the end of the brake arm would have to be below the
 pivot.

Again I'm not claiming that the longer straddle cable didn't work better
for you, just that the cause of the better can't have been increased
 leverage.

Ted, lengthening the saddle cable make the angle of the brake cable to
the brake arm closer to 90˚, and that definitely increased leverage. Here's
 what it looked like:

Thinking off the top of my head: Two small P clamps. One 1/4 X 3/4
aluminum flat bar, long enough to fit between the struts at the desired
light location. Cut the ends of the strap to match the angle of the rack
struts. Drill three holes, one on each end and one in the middle for
mounting the light. Mount the bar between the struts using the P clamps.
Mount the light on the middle hole with a tubular stand off. Or: Use two
flat bars with grooves filed in the them to entrap the rack struts. Use an

Re: [RBW] Re: Two Fish Strap on Bottle Cage?

I would suggest you buy some rubber electrical self vulcanizing splicing
tape. It does not use adhesive. It is available in almost all hardware
stores. Wrap a couple of wraps around the seat tube, then install the
strap. Ultimate no slip grip. It leaves no residue and is very easy to
remove. I make my own frame bags and have used this stuff to line my straps
(with contact cement) so the bags do not slide around, and slowly wear the
paint. With this fix, your Two Fish will not twist or settle. I used to use
a liquid rubber to smear into the surface of the webbing on my pump strap
design. You could try that too. Of course frame and strap should be clean
when installing.

One other thing Patrick: The thick 3M tape becomes very gooey over time,

Patrick, when I first started following Rivendell, they recommended using
zip ties. Drill holes on each side of the fork crown, each side of the
transverse seatstay brace and bottom bracket brace in your fenders. Use zip
ties everywhere. McMaster.com has mil spec zip ties that are stronger and
safer than MalWart. I tried this for awhile, but it upset my esthetics, so
I live with permanently mounted fenders. I bought Planet Bikes quick
release fenders for my go faster bike, and they work well. They only
require a couple of zip ties.

I used the bottle cap mirrors. I forget who makes them, but they use a
glass mirror, not plastic. I found the little sharp points on the cap wear
holes in things if allowed to bounce around in a bag. I carefully tore it
apart and super glued the wire to the back of the mirror and tossed the
cap. I wrapped the edge with silicone tape to cover the edge. I use the
German ulra lite mirror on my bike, and just clamped it on the bar end
shifter body. It clears the shifter in all gears. I quit using the glasses

[RBW] Re: A Life Update

2015-06-04 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

Cecily, I hope all goes great! Work hard at rehab! Please keeps us
informed on your progress. My orthopedist keeps telling me I need a new
knee too. I have been putting it off. I had a ex-marine friend get both his
knees done at once. He really regretted that decision, but he now rides
 motorcycles and bikes off road.

[RBW] Re: How are albatross and albastache bars for long distance riding?

2015-06-20 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I tried the 'Stache. I found the brake levers, which have to be mounted
almost in plane with the bars, did not mesh with my weird wrists. I am one
of those weirdo's who's ulna is longer than normal. Carpal tunnel surgeries
didn't help. I run drop bars very high, with the plane of the seat about
half way between the drops and the tops. Why run drops, if you can't get
down in the hooks and stay there, comfortably? I see so many folks refusing
to raise their bars due to fashion, the experts, and outside influences
in general. Your back, neck, wrists and smiles will all benefit.

[RBW] Re: bb cable guide channel question

2015-06-26 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
My cables have been sawing away at my bottom bracket on my Atlantis since
1998. It is my 'car' and I ride it constantly. There is a shallow groove
worn into the shell, but not very deep. It should be good for another
couple of decades. The frustration of the cable popping out of the little
metal guides still remains. Maybe I will get a plastic guide someday,
maybe.

I've been using a Velo Orange sealed one inch threaded headset for over a

The Chris King headset I bought, won't work with headset spacers between

[RBW] Re: loaded handling question

2015-05-30 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

I was troubled by severe shimmy on my old Atlantis. I had a Nitto small
front rack with a Tubus low rider. No matter how I changed the weight, it
persisted. I bought a Nitto big front rack from Riv and the shimmy
disappeared. For years I resisted the voices that said to load the front.
Once I did, no prob. I have a theory that the Tubus front rack and others
of the ilk, are too flexible laterally (not the rears, they are
triangulated). Between the fork and rack oscillation dance, wibblewobbles
raise their heads and make one nervous. The load yaws on the flexible rack,
twisting the fork a bit, which hits the right oscillation frequency
 and.

[RBW] Re: BQ to publish study of pedal retention usefulness in Summer issue

2015-06-11 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

After riding clipless and toe clips since 1987, I wanted my spin to be
more efficient, so I spent 3-1/2 years perfecting my spin, by pedaling a
stationary bike, one legged on slippery flat pedals. The only time I have
found clipless to be an advantage is when you need the extra horse power by
pulling up, which I find I rarely need anymore. I went to flats due to bad
knees, and am glad I did. For road racing and cross country mountain bike
racing, clipless is still the way to go. I run clipless on my plastic road
bike, but flats on my mountain bike and Atlantis. There are so many
advantages to flat pedals. It took awhile for me to unknot my clipless
pedal is superior mindset and open it to flats.

Trust me, I am and edumacated bike mag rag reader and believe everything
they say. I have found a few things Jan has wrote that make me question
his expertise, but overall he seems on point. He talked about brake
judder and how plastic bikes accentuate it. Basic brake work: You toe in
your brake pads to get rid of judder, no matter what the frame material is.
He seemed infer that judder in plastic bikes is incurable, but I think he
was just putting on a sales spin for his bikes. I enjoy his magazine, but
in the end, I take all bike advice with a grain of pepper. After all, the
joy we find in riding is the choices WE decide, not what the magazines,
experts or pros say, not the egomaniac cycle expert with too much
testosterone, or the bike marketing industry that makes absurd claims. For
me, riding a bike is liberating. I just want to ride like a kid again, just
riding my bike and enjoying every pedal stroke. Too much bike expert
noise, takes the fun out of it. Ego's are a funny thing and I find mine
very irritating at times. . . . Like right now... lol.

[RBW] Re: Dirt Drop stem with Atlantis?

2015-07-23 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

I run a Dirt Drop stem on my Atlantis. I have for many years. I recommend
it highly. Points: The obtuse angle is better on your liver, spleen and
bladder in a head on accident than the acute angle of a regular road stem
(ex paramedic fretting). I have some spinal issues, and the ability to
raise the bars high is the best thing I ever did for my lower back and
neck. S comfortable. The seat level bisects the middle of the bar
hooks, so I can use the drops at least fifty percent of the time, instead
of always being on the tops and hoods. I don't look at the road right in
front of my wheel as much...lol. Eric, I would recommend you get the 100,
not the 80 mm stem. The stem raises your bars up and BACK quite a bit. I
like a short top tube and so I tried the 80 and it was way too short. Of
course that is all dependent on frame size, height, physical issues and
yadda yadda...Best of luck getting comfy.

[RBW] Re: More Sam Love--and do you ride your Riv through winter?

2015-07-22 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

I live in Central Oregon and I ride year round on my Atlantis. I hate
cars, and I am car-less. We get snow, and it gets pretty cold. Winter
before last, it hit twenty below. Crazy weather warming weirdness. Anyhoo,
here are my tips: I run fenders with lots of clearance and ensure that the
bottom of the fenders are closer to the tire than the top. This ensures
snow does not get packed into a narrowing space between the tire and
fender. I made long fender flaps from medium weight leather that gets
neatsfoot oiled yearly. A Son hub with a Luxo U light, is mounted on the
front rack. I took an old fender and pop riveted a short extension onto the
existing fender on the front to prevent water from splashing up onto the
light and vent hole. I use studded tires and run pressure low enough to
ensure the studs make contact with the ice, and to provide a small amount
of comfort for the battering of riding over auto-chewed-chunks.

I treated the inside of the frame with Frame Saver, twice. I keep the
scratches touched up and wax my bike three or four times throughout the
year. Waxing helps the crud to fall off and helps preserve the finish.
I had my Atlantis powder coated to give it a little more armor compared to
the stock paint.
Waterproof panniers and a Ortlieb handlebar bag carries stuff.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3Vj2MCulwjs/VdyHp_Jql8I/AE4/qADRe3RvATA/s1600/IMG_2396.JPG
I made a custom padded bag for my small Sony camera that clips onto my
handlebar bag. I sewed up a pouch that fits perfectly and used a magnetic
clasp to close it and heat molded some ABS plastic with a heat gun to
conform to the bag frame for the clip. The pouch sits inside the handlebar
bag right at the rim. The camera is suspended in cloth rather than bouncing
around with something else or banging away on a rack or basket. It works
great. I just wished the camera took better photos. I think my Iphone 6
takes better pictures, but alas, no telephoto. Sewing in three dimensions
is hard!

[RBW] Hand made hack quick release Fenders!

2015-10-26 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

After asking the group for fender recommendations, I bought Velo Oranges
stainless. I found them to be too heavy, and they did not give me enough
tire clearance. I then went and looked at Woody's wood fenders and found
them to be too heavy too, and too thick for clearance with my 2.25 tires.

The fenders I used are Planet Bikes quick release model. The stock
attachments are terrible, so I made fender clips that snap onto my *racks*,
from ABS, using a heat gun, and they snap on with authority. I fine tuned
the front ones for a safety release in case I suck up a stick. The fenders
snap on and off in about 40 seconds. They are laterally far more rigid than
all the permanent mounted fenders I have tried, as the wire stays are
shorter and splay out more. I glued and riveted a thin compound curved
stainless strip to the front fender to increase lateral stiffness, which
helped a wee bit. I had to remove and reposition the rear stock stays. You
can see how short they are.

I am rather surprised and very happy on how well these work.

Re: [RBW] My new project, The DirtDance Spinnaker Bag.

2015-11-05 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
No wobble at all, when all wrapped up tight. I was actually shocked how
tight the load (tent and pad) is secured. The secret is in the flex wings
and the two side straps (they attach to the mid rails of the rack) that
tighten the load, by pulling down on the wings after you roll down the top.
I haven't tried riding with a full bag of groceries in spinnaker mode yet.
I have a hunch, it will be very unstablelol. The spinnaker mode is
kind of a joke due to the bag being so big, but it actually has some merit
in holding the bag open while loading, and it should block some of the cold
from hitting my thighs, when it's in the twenties...

The Tires are from VEE rubber. VEE made Intense's super fast fat Micro
Knobby, which I loved. Intense dropped them, so I went looking at VEE's
tires for something similar. The tires are the MK3 model, 2.20". Love
them. Fast, light, soft, and enough traction for off road. The handlebars
are the Sycip singles bar, which are no longer on their site. They are
super wide, 26", and have a nice bend. So much nicer than drops, especially
loaded and when on single track.

[RBW] My new project, The DirtDance Spinnaker Bag.

2015-11-04 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I'm actually exhausted, and feel a little sick to my stomach. Too much
coffee (my beloved addiction) and a new serious obsession. I developed a
new kind of bikepacking bag that addresses problems I have had.
There were several surprises of perfect serendipity that occurred. I love
it when it happens, and it is happening more and more with my projects.
Serendipity is THE golden moment of creativity! (A guiding hand, a ghost?
Or does my subconscious see solutions and combinations before my conscious
mind sees them?)
Ok, back to the bag. It weighs the same as a small Wald basket without the
baskets mounting hardware, but with three times the capacity. It is
intended to sit on top of my front rack and hold my tent and sleeping pad,
as well as some odds and ends. It holds various sized loads very tightly,
with no shimmy, shaking, squeaking, rattling, shifting or ANY load
movement. It is very aerodynamic, considering. The bag only has one buckle.
There are no compression straps in or around the bag. The bottom of the bag
is padded. The base plate has a very simple and integrated low profile
quick release, that snaps on the rack instantly, with no moving parts and
leaves no hardware left on the rack when removed (It is very strong and
stands no chance of jettisoning the load accidentally). There is a built in
spring tensioner that is part of the base plate, designed out of ABS that
helps keep the load under tension. There are no moving parts. At camp, it
expands to HUGE (three times the size of a small Wald basket) and stays
wide open, sitting tall, while mounted on top of the rack, making a great
pantry. It then zips shut to keep out the critters, while you take a walk
to the toilet or take a safety break. If there is a strong tailwind, it can
become a spinnaker. When cold, it can block the wind that hits my thighs
and lower torso. When empty and stowed on the bike, it is tiny, about the
size of a TV dinner box.
I need to make a new one, that is not my reused, homemade basket bag, but a
bag designed from the start. Due to serendipity, I found some new things to
fix and add. I can take some of the weight out of the base plate too.
I am pretty stoked, all in all.
I REALLY need a new walking foot sewing machine to clean up my sewing. My
one hundred dollar, ten year old Singer is not designed for such brutal
projects. It is very frustrating to use. I am going to buy one, as soon as
my desire wins over the responsibility to my wallet.

[RBW] Instructional videos on how to make your own ABS fender clips and saddle bag clips are posted on Facebook Rivendell Owners group page.

2015-10-31 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I had several requests to make an instructional video on ABS quick release
fender clip making. I couldn't figure out how to splice them together into
one, so there are four posts. They cover my thinking on material selection,
strap width, heating the plastic and imagination. I needed a quick release
for the bottom of my Adam bag, so I made one on these videos. Exact same
technique is used in making fender clips. I hope your imaginations run
wild. What else is needed that can be made from ABS? Let me know what you
come up with. So far I have made: A 2" diameter kickstand pad, fender clip
quick releases, a camera case mount, the bag rack clip shown in these
videos, and molded internal frame bag skeletons. I have future, project
thoughts on bikepacking.
Global warming is a serious emergency. I bang the drum loudly. Bike
commuting is something to encourage. It should also be easier and these
projects should help.

[RBW] Fender pondering.....

2015-10-09 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Asking for help from the tribeI am starting to think I no longer want
plastic fenders gracing my Atlantis. For me they last about two years max,
with my fender sadism. Plasticky is icky, (except for Ortliebs) and all
that. I am curious to hear peoples reviews of wooden and aluminum fenders.
How long should I expect them to last (*I ride my Atlantis off road
occasionally*)? I can get (wide 26") Velo Orange aluminum and powder coat
to match my frame, or spend an equal fortune to get the lovely compound
wooden ones. I am looking for durability first and foremost. I have a
sneaky suspicion that the wood would have a better fatigue life. *What says
the Riv Tribe*?

Thanks in advance

My riding situation is urban-ish. I live carless, and have for many years.
I hate cars. My wife was killed in a car wreck, then there are the drunk
drivers, global warming etc. Since dumping cars, the quality of my life
went up. The miles I put on my Atlantis vary, as I don't ride, unless I
need to go somewhere, or I really need some time in the forest. I don't
rent cars or take public transportation, so I ride everywhere I need to go.

I made the frame bag too. I originally was going to use a key chain belt
retractor for an anti-floppage-device, but the strap is bomb proof and
lighter. If you make your own, make sure the elastic does not have too much
strength or it will pull the bars around. The strap could work from a
saddle bag or a rack trunk too. It just wouldn't be quite as easy to put
away.

[RBW] Photos of the Spinnaker bag number two, now called the "Stuinnaker Bag"

2015-12-03 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I bought a new walking foot sewing machine, a Sailrite. After years of
trying to make bike bags with a one hundred dollar Singer, I have found a
bulldozer for a sewing machine. Love it! First projects were a tent pole
and Tenkara bags to get used to the machine, the third the Stuinnaker bag.
I took all the serendipity of Spinnaker bag one, and refined the details
a bit. I beefed up the snap plate by using 1/8" ABS, sized the bag smaller,
added a small front pocket, downsized the zipper and added two straps, one
for my sit pad, the other for load adjustment. I added two side strap
control strips to keep the side compression straps centered.
It fits my tent and sleeping pad and works great for groceries. I also
made a quick release clear windshield to use when it is really cold to help
keep the wind off my knees and thighs.
It weighs two ounces less than my small front quick release Wald basket,
one lb. four oz.. The advantages over the basket are many:

   1) Better load control. Loads in the bag are under constant *spring*
loaded compression, keeping everything tight.
   2) No rattles (base of bag is padded).
   3) Greater volume.
   4) Instant attachment to the rack with no added hardware left on the
bike.

For all 23 photos, see my wall on FaceBook.

[RBW] Stuinniker update

2016-05-30 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

 The
fourth evolution of the Stuinniker front rack top bag. I'm pretty happy
with this version. It is smaller, and dedicated to bikepacking, not as a
basket bag combo like the previous versions. I made a new dinky snap
plate/beam from carbon fiber, so it snaps on and off the rack like the
previous versions, but is much more durable
and much lighter. This Stuinniker version weighs less (12 oz) than the
previous one (20 oz). I have more photos on Instagram under
#DirtDanceDesigns or #StuinnikerBP.It is basically an off road
Randonneur bag, which can be rolled down tight on a load, to prevent the
rattles and destruction of the contents from bouncing around like a regular
randonneur bag.

There is another (San Francisco) Clayton. I am the Bend Clayton. I am not
selling these, as I have physical issues (numb hands) which makes sewing
frustrating, difficult and slow. (The Stuinniker BP took me five days to
make). If the demand is there, I might make up some patterns for people to
make their own. Thanks for the kind words Michael. Hopefully a bag maker
will take the design and make them for sale

[RBW] Re: Handlebars for problem backs?

2016-01-16 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

I support the wide flat bar suggestions.

I have had three lower back surgeries and three carpal tunnel hand
surgeries among others. I run a bar similar to an AHEARN or Jones Bar, and
a Nitto dirt drop stem on my Atlantis. I found the Albatross bars were too
upright. With fat tires and a suspension seatpost, sitting upright isn't so
bad. I don't have quite as much power, but my back is happyish on the bike,
and my hand doesn't go numb and fall off the bars. I ran Noodles and
various drop bars mounted absurdly high, until the carpal tunnel started
in, then switched to flat pedals and flat bars at the same time. My back
and bad knee are happier now. Best of luck.

[RBW] Re: Route Suggestions: LA to Joshua Tree

2016-02-07 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
I lived in southern California. It is pure asphalt and traffic most
everywhere. The only 'nice' ride I can recommend would be through the
mountains. I lived in the San Bernardino mountains for years. From LA,
head up into the San Gabriel mountains, across to Cajon pass, up through
Crestline, Lake Gregory, Lake Arrowhead, Running Springs and Big Bear and
finally down to the high desert and Joshua tree. You'll pass four lakes;
Silverwood, Lake Gregory, Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear. Lots of steep
climbing with this route. Pack light and be in great shape.

2016-02-09 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Well, Philip thanks for the patches. They are well done and one will find a
home on a new Stuinniker bag soon. I just wanted to say great job and your
efforts are appreciated. Good colors too. I gave one to my son, who is the
mechanic for Giant Bicycles on their world enduro team (might make it to
his tool roll), and two went to friends that have a bike shop in town,
Livingston cycles at Bend Velo. I feel like I have something
preciouslol.

Thanks again,

[RBW] Re: Brooks saddle repair?

2016-05-16 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch
Tim, I bent my rails too. I would suggest you loosen your clamp and slide
the seat back just a wee bit and maybe add a light coating of grease to the
rails. It could be the bending of the rails lifted/changed the clamp rail
interface enough to cause the squeak. Worth a shot.

My

there and enjoy the environment, as I never caught anything with it
before...The Tenkara rod bag is the one with the antler button.

[RBW] Bag making

2016-04-15 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

Attention Bike Tinkers Union: I spent the winter making bikepacking gear
for my Atlantis. You can see my work at #DirtDanceDesigns on Instagram. I
am currently making an Enduro frame race pack for Josh Carlson on Team
Giant that uses no straps or fittings for frame attachment. The homemade
computer mount I made from an old bar end, a brake cable and a block of
aluminum. I hope these inspire you to make your own stuff.

I use the Cateye Urban on two of my bikes. Speed, distance, time and the

Beware, once you are spoiled by the ride of these tires, it will be hard to
take them off.

I haven't had them long enough to report on wear, but due to my wreck, I am
thinking they might have a harder compound, and should last longer than
they appear they would.

Last but not least, they look really cool.

[RBW] Re: Toyo Atlantis Shimmy ???

2016-08-25 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

I have a Toyo Atlantis and had shimmy with a rear biased load. Once I put a
little more weight on the front, it went away. I used Tubus low riders with
a small Nitto mini rack on the front and had horrible shimmy when loaded.
When I went to a Nitto big front rack, it went away. Currently I am
running the Nitto M-12 mini rack, with my Stuinniker bag, and with King
Kage " Anything" cages on my fork, which works great for my bikepacking
needs (but lousy for groceries)There is enough load on the front to
prevent shimmy, and light enough steering to feel like a bicycle and not a
semi truck.
