[RBW] Re: Anyone using Catalyst Pedals on their Rivendell?

2017-10-07 Thread Jay Connolly
I have these pedals on my Joe and really like them. It took a few rides to
adjust to riding with the foot more forward, but now I don’t even think about
it, even though I have these on only one of several bikes. I bought them
because flats cause me hotfoot on rides of more than about an hour. These
pedals solved the problem. I’ll probably pick up one more set before too long.

[RBW] Re: Anyone using Catalyst Pedals on their Rivendell?

2017-10-07 Thread Jay Connolly
Probably depends on the length of the rider’s foot. The catalysts are designed
to bridge the entire arch of the foot. It works even with my huge feet,
removing the concentration of pressure from the ball of the foot. According to
the hype on the Pedalling innovations page, optimal efficiency will be achieved
only in this centered orientation. YMMV. Works for me. The MKS pedals are
almost an inch shorter, I believe, but they may well provide the same
experience to riders with feet smaller than mine.

Re: [RBW] Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2017-10-23 Thread Jay Connolly
Benz, the Joe has been that way for a couple of months. I used a drop bar for a
while but have enjoyed the bike much more with the Jones. I use the bike as a
hauler at our cottage. Lots of bad pavement on narrow roads, with bail-out
roadside trails for when the traffic is heavy, so the bike takes lots of
knocks. It also has me yanking and pushing on the bars when I stand, and I’m a
super-duper Clyde. I had the same initial reaction as you to the two-bolt
system but have had no issues. I bought the Joe to be my touring bike, but life
got in the way of a planned tour last summer. Will definitely tour with the
Jones bar.

Re: [RBW] Trigger shifters on swept-back bars - Jones or others

2017-10-23 Thread Jay Connolly
There a ton of room on the Jones bars and on the Ospreys. I use Shimano 9 speed
on the Joe with Jones. They work great. I got a deal too good to pass up on a
1x crank, and someone gave me a brand new 11-42 cassette for free, so my Clem

[RBW] Re: Big cassettes/Do I need a wolftooth roadlink or similar

2017-12-18 Thread Jay Connolly
I'm pretty sure you won't get the 9-speed Deore XT to shift to a 40 without
the Roadlink or at least a very long B screw.

I used a Roadlink to run an 11-40 rear with a 46/30 front on a 2x touring
bike, which worked great, but 46 is about as big as you'll be able to go in
the front--the 44 Silver would probably hit the sweet spot. IIRC, I did not
need the long B screw for my setup, but mine was with 10-speed gear. You'd
probably be wise to order the extended B screw. I tried the same deal on my
wife's 50/34 without success.

[RBW] Real ride comparison: Joe Appaloosa vs Sam Hillborne vs Roadini?

2017-12-18 Thread Jay Connolly
I have a Sam, a Clem L, and a Joe. Setup is everything. The Clem L is new and a
workhorse: groceries, errands, and dog walking. The Joe is in another
location—one with bad pavement, lots of gravel connectors, soft forest trails,
and a bit of mud—and I have it set it up for “anyroad” riding, with 700 x 50
Cazaderos. I have been running a Jones bar, but on the weekend, I’m going back
to Noodles (stole the Jones for Clem). I don’t ride for fast, but I ride hard
about half the time, and I like the variety of hand positions on a drop bar.
The Sam is set up for long road rides where the pavement is mostly good. I just
bought a Nitto Moustache from a list member and will convert the bike this
winter (stole the noodles for the Joe). I like the aggressive position of the
moustache. The Sam has 700 x 44 Snolqualmie Pass treads, which I just love but
don’t ride in the winter on account of the accumulated debris and winter rain
where I live. Lotta winter flats. The Joe is a great explorer, the way I run
it, but it’s not vastly different from the Sam. Because of different tires,
bars, and intentions, though, they feel very different. It’s easy to raise and
lower the stem on the Sam to make it more or less aggressive. I would love a
Roadini, but I’m probably too heavy for it, and I like to be able to run a 38.

[RBW] Light Touring

2017-11-03 Thread Jay Connolly
I'm often struck by references to "light touring"--most recently in the
posted Cheviot brochure, which advises that the bike is suitable for light
touring (up to 35 pounds). I'm interested in whether the issue involves
frame strength or bike handling. I weigh more than most people PLUS their
full touring loads, and I've never had any issues on any kind of steel
frame--road, cross, or mtb. If a smaller person--a 175 pounder, for the
sake of argument--were touring on a Cheviot or any other light touring
bike, is there a reason why they would need to keep the load under 35
pounds? I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable with design/engineering
principles to understand how various loads and roads might stress chain and
seat stays, for instance.

We use all ultralight camping gear, and when touring, my load probably runs
to no more than 25 pounds, but I have toured only on robust touring bikes
(LHT and Fargo). I'm not looking for a light touring bike. I ask purely out
of interest.

Bill, I did not say 170 pounds in my post. I referred to "a 175 pounder."

I don't have time to match you condescension for condescension, but I will

Perhaps, in the rush of bombastic agitation, you simply neglected to choose

Stephen, I don't know that I ever saw one. At one point, I was ready to

I think the 59 would be the one for you in the Clem. I was tempted by the

[RBW] Re: How do you like your Catalyst pedals?

I agree with everything Deacon Patrick says. They are spendy and I have
them only on my Joe. They've been there long enough that I rarely think
about making the foot-position adjustment. The differences in the pedal
size "disappears" when I'm riding, which I think is the ideal.

Re: [RBW] Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2017-10-25 Thread Jay Connolly
Joe, it seems to me that when I followed the standard instructions, my
experience was much like yours. Then I wanted to take them off, which I
managed by opening a gap between the grip and bar with an 18" zip tie and
squirting in some soap and water, then working the grip. It took a while. I
used the soap and water again to reinstall them. There can be some play
until the soap evaporates, but it was much easier. I'm a chronic tinkerer,
but the Jones grips make me think very carefully about what I want before
making the commitment of installation.

I love the Jones and have the 710 Loop on my Joe. When the announced the Jones
Loop 2.5, I ordered one immediately and will probably use it on my Beargrease
this winter. I have a 64 Clem L on order and will be using a Soma Osprey on
that bike. The Osprey is very close to the Jones, without the loop feature. On
anything that will be used for long distances, I really like the loop because
it gives a couple of extra hand positions.

[RBW] A question about frame bags

2017-10-29 Thread Jay Connolly
I’ve used them plenty, exclusively for bike packing. We rode most of the GDMBR
in 2015. My wife’s XS frame was too small for a practical frame bag, but my XL
frame had lots of room. On that ride, there’s plenty of hike-a-bike—or there
was for a couple of middle-aged, middle-class, middle-fit riders. The narrower
the load, the easier the pushing. Because of clearance issues on the XS frame,
my wife could not run a big seat pack, either. She ran panniers. Pushing a bike
up 15% grades with loaded panniers is awkward and was more difficult for her
than for me with my narrow-profile load. Single-track riders also appreciate
the narrow profile, for obvious reasons. Of course, you can bike pack with any
configuration that works. My explanation is informed by a set of assumptions
that show I bought the hype. In practical terms, though, we found there was
some merit to the hype.

Re: [RBW] Rivs with the Jones Loop/Bend H-Bar (Map/Ahearne too)

2017-10-22 Thread Jay Connolly
Yes. They're the Chucky, not the extra chunky. I have the EC on my Jones
and like them more. When I ordered the new bar, I also ordered two sets of
the new grips they're selling--one set of the softer ones (clear) and a set
of the firmer model (black). Both are 34mm, I believe, which makes them the
equivalent of the extra chunky. One set will go on the Ospry bar when the
Clem L shows up.

The Rivs will run fatter. I have 700x50 Cazaderos on my Joe Appaloosa and

[RBW] FS: Road Bike Parts (Batch)

2018-02-18 Thread Jay Connolly
My next bike was going to be a road bike, but now I'm going another way, or
maybe I'll just ride my 5 bikes in rotation and not worry so much about
totally covering the spectrum. As a result, I have a bunch of road bike
parts that I'd like to get rid of all at once to avoid losing a pile on the
shipping. Please don't ask, for a week or so, about breaking up the set. If
it becomes obvious that no one wants the batch, then I'll think about how
to break things up. All parts are new and unused, EXCEPT THE CRANK, which
is well used and has scuffed arms but LOTS of wear left (42 has only a few
hundred kms on it, and the 30 has not seen much use), and the BB, which was

[RBW] New Bike Syndrome

2018-01-13 Thread Jay Connolly
I’d keep the Sam, too. If cycling is important to you, then sometimes it’s
great to have a similar-but-different bike. Use a different bar, a
wider/thinner tire, and setthe bike (or both bikes) to be a little more purpose
driven. I have an Appaloosa set up as an anyroad bike with 700 x 50 Cazaderos
for mud and forest trails. I run a basket some of the time, but mostly use a
Sackville medium seat bag. My Sam, A VERY similar frame, is my road bike. I run
a moustache bar, slicks, and generally keep it unencumbered. They feel entirely
different.

[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-08 Thread Jay Connolly
I've had weight battles my entire life. Some years ago, I was close to 400
pounds. I dropped to 250 a dozen years ago, but I have always struggled
with yo-yoing. EBDJ was the first "system" that made it easy to maintain my
weight.

There are endless books about all this, but one I have found particularly
useful is The Real Meal Revolution by Tim Noakes and Jonah Proudfoot.
Noakes is a national-level coach from South Africa. He contends fat burners
don't need to fuel obsessively during endurance events. Proudfoot is a chef
who provides some incredible recipes, including one for seed crackers that
provide all the crunch anyone would ever need.

Sunrace now sells an 11-50 that fits a standard (I think) Shimano hub, so I

Great looking bike. Count me as a fan of the WI cranks, as well--and of the

Re: [RBW] Turkey Vulture Supreme Gearing: New article about super low gearing on the Analog Journal

2018-03-30 Thread Jay Connolly
Thank for this, James. Some time ago, I came across your turkey vulture concept
and now employ it on several bikes. I live in an area with plenty of very steep
paved and gravel roads—many of them approaching 20% for short stretches—and
even steeper sections on the MTB trails. I’ve found that on MTB or mixed
terrain bikes, an 11-50 1x with a 32t chainring works great. (On once of these
bikes I have a SRAM GX shifter, and on another I use a Shimano XT shifter. Both
use the Shimano M8000 11s rear mech.) On a road bike, I want 105” or better at
the top, but I still need to preserve the 19” low end, so I’ve gone with the WI
46/26 and a 12-36 cassette. Thanks for helping people find these solutions.

[RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2022-11-12 Thread Jay Connolly
Definitely a 2TTer leaning into the Clemster age. Own an Appaloosa for
touring and running around with various loads (and as my winter bike in a
wet climate), a Sam for my version of speed (which is laughably slow, but
really it’s just a reminder not to weigh down the bike with the extra 10
lbs I carry on the Joe day-to-day). Had a 64 Clem which I stupidly sold to
a friend and now wish I had back.

[RBW] Re: Using Your Rivendell Vs. Being Precious: A Spectrum

2022-11-12 Thread Jay Connolly
When I build up a new bike, I’m precious all the way. I often use a
transparent protective tape anywhere a cable might rub or where experience
has taught me that I will pick up a ding. And then I’m paranoid for a
while. Inevitably, I relax, allow the bikes to wear the signs of use, and
abandon the paranoia. Which is a more manageable way to live.
