[RBW] Re: Barefoot Friendly Pedals
I have size ten and a half feet and the gripsters work well for me. but for a larger foot i suggest the larger Tioga pedal. It may have started as a BMX pedal It has spikes I wonder if a thin rubbery sheet could be put on the pedal and anchored with the allen key pins screwed through the rubber On Friday, April 19, 2013 6:27:37 AM UTC-7, Deacon Patrick wrote: Question upfront: how barefoot friendly are the pedals you ride? [RBW] Re: Seattle tour Oct. 1st: weather too iffy?
I dont know how you are planning to get here in the first place but. if the weather has turned here when you are ready to leave you could initiate Plan B and go to Ashland Oregon and do spokes on a wheel touring from there. Ashland has restaurants and there should be good theatre in the evenings. In my experience north of Seattle is better cycling than south of Seattle. But if you like starting somewhere and riding home as a tour you have a better feel for your range of distance than anyone else. \ Gear wise I had a nightmare experience with Hilltrek and am not all that taken with the jacket I finally recieved. If i had it to do over again i might shop the Orvis tent sale especially this time of year instead. What do you think? I suppose we could also consider doing the tour, but credit-card style. [RBW] Re: Rivish Spots Around Downtown Seattle?
Macrina's bakery has several locations including Belltown and Queen Anne Hill. Queen Anne is quieter and neighborhoodier but coming from Fremont to Queen Anne I could never keep the front wheel on the ground. coffee and pastry are world class. Honore five blocks north of Ballard High School is different but equally beyond compare.that would be 70th and twelfth NE. Bike shop, Elliot Bay and Free Range are nice and also Wright Brothers in Fremont is Old School and used to be a bicycle Co op and technically still is sorta. The gentleman who runs the shop competes with the UW on Irish History so dont get him started if you dont have an hour and a half. If you want a full campi aniversary grupo and are willing to pay for it, that is where to start. If you want to ride the Burke Gillman is still the best unless you want to hammer. The nice place to sit and look at people and bikes is probably the Bauhaus on lower Capital Hill on Pike just up from the freeway overpass. Coffee is perfect pastry is much less so. It gets nice sun in the four to six time slot another nice place to ride is from Western Avenue downtown up the trail towards Ballard. There is a statuary park just down from the Olde Spagehetti Factory and the trail goes north from there. [RBW] Re: Rivish shop in Fremont?
there are two places i would suggest as rivish in fremont. different aspects of rivish though. Free Range Cycles carries the greatest hits from the rivendell catalogue. Lots of Nitto in stock as opposed to LBS Kulshan Cycles in Belling ham which will gladly order Nitto for you.m When Nice folks at Free Range and when i was there they had a whole rack of different sized Technomic stems. there is also Wright Brothers which is funky old school competent. They were a Co op when i lived in Seattle in the early eighties. They still are but not exclusively. The shop is not a clean modern well lighted store. It has a little bit of the Jack Black vibe from Hi Fidelity. More than a little really. But if you want a full boxed anniversary set of campagnolo groupo and dont want to wait for it to be shipped, Wright Brothers is your man. And you can join the Co op and use the workstand and space to wrench on things yourself. I doubt they are open on Sunday. Another kinda Rivish place is Rosebud on the BG in Fremont. The gentleman who runs it has been all over the bike industry and does high end bike work. Not the guy to talk to about your Stumpjumper but will do high end things for your Rambouillet So Rivendell is in Walnut Creek. If you can isolate the Rivish elements you want you may be able to get some of them at different places in Seattle Bo Richardson On Sunday, July 21, 2013 8:56:25 AM UTC-7, Christopher Chen wrote: Gonna be in Fremont today. [RBW] For Sale 56 Rambouillet
I have two Rambouillets and an Atlantis. The 56cm Rambouillet is too big and I am selling it. The price seems fair to me, especially if I include the seat and pedals.Maybe a little negotiating room... What do you all think? [RBW] Need Cycling Safety Statistic for newspaper article
I wrote an article for the Bellingham Herald about who pays for roads and that Chuckanut Drive was built for bicycles and wagons and not for cars. In the article I cited an old statistic that ninety percent of all cycling crashes happen in the first two years of cycling. I have been quoting the statistic for years and cant remember where I picked it up. I got called on it and the closest I could come to backing it up was that novices crash at a rate of five times that of experienced cyclists in spite of novices almost never riding in bad weather or at night or other dangerous times. Can anyone help me out or correct me on this point of fact? Thanks Bo Richardson -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Crazy Idea: Riv National Jamboree
Bellingham is on the Washington Canada border and has great food and salmon to barbeque in the summer. We have world class wine and micro brew beers although that pleasure is denied me these days. the riding here is beyond belief people who wanted to stay longer than a weekend could hit the san juans or the canadian gulf islands or go over the mountains to eastern Washington I bet bellingham and seattle together have as large a riv density as anywhere in the country judging from my riv sightings and the contributors to the listserv. many people would not buy the idea that bellingham is centrally located even though it is half way between seattle and vancouver bc On Wednesday, July 31, 2013 7:40:24 AM UTC-7, Liesl wrote: Do you think we could do it? [RBW] Request for Advice: Portland to Mount Vernon via Astoria, Olympic Peninsula, and Whidbey Island
if you are able to do a little day ride north to edison from mt vernon on friday saturday or sunday, have a meal and hang out at tweets in the middle of edison. we locals ride south from bellingham every weekend and eat there and get bread and cookies from the Breadfarm next door-ish and Anne's coffee from her roasting shed on Samish Island or you can also get it from Slough Foods. Head east on Bow Hilll Road and get wonderrful blueberries at the blueberrie farm where Nancy and Harrlan are now serving up blueberry crepes. Edison is the food center of the known universe at this point. tweets is exraorrdinarry and worth the trip on its own. my first idea was Colony Mountain Social Climbers but that was a bit too self deprecating or ironic or something contemplatif or sportif might work both dick and i have done Ski to Sea which might make us competative enough for sportif although dick did the running leg, not cycling anne is clearly contemplatif Dick DeWaard owns the 68 cm Atlantis -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Rambouillet conundrum
i love my 54 blue Ram with 700 c wheels. I had a 54 Homer with 650 b wheels which i didnt like and niether did my riding buddy anne. i really think it was the tires a lot. i have almost new compass tires on the Ram which i love but they are hard to repair with a hand pump after they have stretched. i am getting jack brown blues as a compromise. i also have a 56 ram which i need to sell and i wonder if a certain frame may work better in some sizes than others. My metaphor is the proportions changing when type fonts are scaled up or down the 56 has Marathons which trade off pleasure for flat protection. I like the Ram better than my Atlantis with 26 inch wheels I like the Atlantis better with compass tires than with Marathons but i ride marathons in the winter compass in the summer and if i were riding across the us i would ride the Atlantis with Schwalbes -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Cover of Bicycle Times Magazine
i let my subscription to BQ lapse because i got tired of photographs of Jan first thing i learned in 8th grade journalism is the writer does not put himself in the photos. one highly experienced bicycle industry professional referred to BQ as Jan's paper blog. diversifying the writer pool and topics wouldn't hurt. i still buy the occasional copy and i think jan's prose is less flat and technical writerly than it used to be. and from personal experience i know how difficult writing in a foreign language is. but every photograph of jann makes me cringe. if he makes a policy of keeping himself out of the photographs i will resubscribe. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Velo News on Bike Weight
nice paint might be a factor i remember a world class racing car driver who said a good coat of turtlewax was good for 2mph at the top end 165 to 167 mph. I remain confident that the nice thick paint on my Ram is a contributing factor to my weekend 45 mile ride times remaining somewhat consistent and even improving a bit over a five year period. About the different feel of those different bikes -- seems to support that there is more to the picture than just weight -- and it's hard to pin down what it is. Jan Heine has written a bit about the feel of different tires, as well as planing and how a bit of frame flex can make a bike feel fast. But even those things might not totally explain it. Just gives us more to think about. Regarding bike weight: my own experience with a motley array of different bikes of different builds and qualities has been that weight is relatively unimportant when it comes to feeling (note that word) spritely or lively -- a notion that involves ease of pedaling and cadence in a given gear, so it's not purely mental smoke. I had an old Herse that was a tank as to weight (guesstimate 28 lb) but that from the first pedal stroke felt fast. My erstwhile Sam Hillborne, no heavier, felt much slower; and even the very light framed, *tout 531* '73 Motobecane didn't feel as spritely; very same tires, IRC Tandems, 30 mm. My current Ram, also not light at ~26 lb, feels fast, though this one has Parigi Roubaix tires on it. I wish I had an explanation for this phenomenon. I hesitantly guess that fit and geometry affect this perception. One exception to the weight no matter rule: my Riv fixie gofast, at 17 1/2 lb and with 370 gram rims and 200 gram tires seems easier (measured by gearing -- slightly higher than other cruising gears at 75 -- and cadence) to push up hills; in fact, every time I decide I don't need a gofast and what I'll do is convert it to rack, lighting, 35+ mm tires, I ride up some hills and decide, Damn! This is too good to relinquish! In any case, I wrote something about this idea on The Retrogrouch Blog last year. Not scientific, but just a comparison between two of my own bikes and my commute to work. The two bikes are pretty similar, but one is loaded up with bags, racks, fenders, lights, etc. all of which probably adds 15 lbs or so. I normally use the loaded one for my work commute, and it normally takes me about 50 minutes to ride the 13 miles to work. I achieved my best time, however, on the lighter bike -- 45 minutes for the same commute. However, that day, I had also managed to hit nothing but green lights the whole way to work. When I managed the same feat, all green lights, with the loaded bike, I came awfully close - 46 minutes. Again - it's more anecdotal than scientific, but in the end, I concluded that there are probably a lot of other things that make more difference than weight, and that being the case, it hardly makes sense to obsess about grams. If fenders, or racks/bags can improve our comfort and convenience, then they're worth whatever weight they add. It seems to me that a lighter bike feels faster, but the difference is more perception than reality. if interested, here's the link to the full article: http://bikeretrogrouch.blogspot.com/2014/05/a-tale-of-two-bikes.html Kyle Brooks Akron, OH On Sunday, February 15, 2015 at 8:41:33 AM UTC-5, Fullylugged wrote: GPP has said as much on the Blug before, but it's nice to see it in the Zeitgiest as well. If a 160 lb rider on a 22lb bike wants a 10% improvement is climbing speed, you need to drop 18 lbs! Going from a Bombadil to a Pinarello Dogma won't get you there. (I don't think. It might be close). Going on a diet and riding a lot of hills will though. http://velonews.competitor.com/2014/08/news/bike-weight- myth-fast-bikes_339880 -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
