Maybe look at some of the downhill pedals? I did some image searching, the raised portion of the spd pedal might still be too high for wearing flat shoes, but they are designed to have grip even not clipped in. They have spikes that could be extended to provide better unclipped traction.

I definitely +1 the Saris bones although I'd say get the 3 bike rack instead of the 2 as it's almost the same size and you can space your bikes out a little more. Completely OT, I do not recommend the crosstrek, it's not the best of an impreza+forester it's the worst of both. Bad handling +
