Did not buy it. I was looking for riv with a slightly smaller frame than
my 56cm Sam. Turns out the 54 hunq is alost identical in frame size as the
56 sam so I declined. The guys ebay name is tattoo.jesse.
Good Luck!!

[RBW] Hunqapillar

2018-11-16 Thread Bruce Baker
Ok now I know that rim brakes are fine now I need to about fit. I have a
56cm sam but I consider it a bit large. Looking at the geometry (older
Hunq) the 54 cm look about th e same but it does have the bullmoose bar not
drops. I think it is a good price point of $1500.00 whole bike. Should I
just spring for it and stop over analyzing??

Re: [RBW] What do Rivendell riders use for GPS computers?

2017-08-25 Thread Bruce Baker
Easy been using mapmyride app for smartphone. All rides are archived
location, distance, avg speed, elapsed time and you can look at speed for
different intervals of time and they are archived and you can download them
to an excel spreadsheet. Essentialy has worked flawlessly since 2010.

who know the jargon, it's a SLAP tear.

Searching for info about cycling and recovery from this kind of surgery
has left me a bit blue. It looks like 4-6 weeks in a sling, then very slow
 4-6 months to full use.

Ironically, I'd just received a 54cm Sam Hillborne frame the week I tore
it. The frame is now fully built and sits unused.

My questions are: Has anyone on the list had the surgery and, if so, what
was your recovery like? And, what's the best wisdom from the group
regarding cycling and recovery from SLAP repairs?

 Thanks,

Re: [RBW] Bike crash and question on hematoma healing

2015-01-13 Thread Bruce Baker
Very Timely question!! I lost control on a wooden bridge two weeks ago
from this past Monday. I was going about 12 mph. It was misting and I had
just gone thru a puddle got onto the bridge and just slightly turned and
wham!!! the rear end just went out from underneath me. I was clipped in but
the bike slid off to my left and I hit my knee but slammed into the bridge
with my thigh. I didn't go t the doctor but did drive myself home. Huge
bruise developed with an oval shaped raised hematoma. I was always able to
walk but it was painful. The good news is that most of the bruising has
healed hematoma is going down and I plan on trying a ride wed or thursday
of this week.

Crashed hard yesterday on my hunqapilar. (got a flat, replaced the tube,
way underinflated it, then a little while later I lost traction on a sharp
turn and skidded and crashed on the pavement, helmet saved my life, wear
 your damn helmets!)

Doctor said weeks to months. Various internet threads seem to confirm the
same. But you guys and girls are smarter than various internet threads ;)

Hunqapillar is fine, not sure about those brand new big ben tires though.
I'm going back to Smart Sams.

Hi John,
I'm suprised I haven't seen mapmyride pop in this discussion. I have been
using this since 2010 and like it a lot. It is free and generates a bunch
of statistics on daily, weekly, monthly and annual distance. It also breaks
down each ride into segments. The iphone app for this works great. There
were a few snags early on but most seem to be worked out at this time.

I've been on the fence about using a computer to track mileage for some

 The criteria:

 1. It has to be very simple to operate and easy to read.
 2. I don't need or want heart rate monitor or anything like altitude or
 anything complicated.
 3. I'm just interested in tracking mileage (how far was my ride today? I
seldom know - which is not always a bad thing, but I get curious).
 4. I don't want to spend a lot of money. I'm thinking I can do this for
 $30 or so?

 Thanks.

That is, until I rode the ES by SOMA. I had met Grant Petersen and got a
lot of insight from reading his book, Just Ride.
I went with 700 X 28mm ruffy-tuffies and LOVE the ride. I have now sold
both other bikes and all I ride is the Extra Smoothie. The frame only cost
$399! My total cost of the bike, including custom fitting by a Serotta
dealer who really knows his stuff, only came to around $2 Grand. This
included custom wheels and most accessories you would find on a Sam or any
other RIV inspired bike. They have a great website and I do not have any

Re: [RBW] OT: Advice on trailer hitch mounted bicycle racks

I have had a thule drop down hitch rack for about ten years. This is
the one that the wheels set in trays and it is secured in back with a

So, just to divert comments about this -

 1) Yes, it's a different presentation. I liked the older way too, but then
again, I was just used to it. In a couple weeks, you'll probably never miss
 it.

 2) Yes, it makes you reestablish your google ID connections, no longer using
your previous image or moniker. No, I don't know why. If this vexes you,
please direct your wrath to the folks at google, rather than share it with
 the group.

 3) The discussion can still be enjoyed via email, rather than the site.

From my point of view as list admin, it does allow some other controls, such
as Locking a discussion or making an Announcement as opposed to a
discussion thread, and always displaying it at the top of the list. In
fact, I'll probably do a couple of those things to this post, so folks
continue to see it. I'll dig into things a little more next week.

 All-righty, that's enough list-adminy stuff for a Friday

Re: [RBW] Using a Sam Hillborne as a go fast-ish bike

2012-03-27 Thread Bruce Baker
Sean,
I have had a Sam Hillborne for a couple of years and 2000 miles or so. I
have ridden alot of bikes but I wouldn't say the Sam is a go fastish bike.
The Sam is smooth, comfortable and is the most comfortable riding bike I
have ever had but not go fastish..
Bruce

On Sun, Mar 25, 2012 at 7:13 PM, SeanMac seanm...@gmail.com wrote:

I'm considering pulling the trigger on one of the new blue Sam
Hillborne's. They look like really wonderful bikes. Strong, versatile,
attractive are words that come to mind when I think about this bike. These
are qualities that I find attractive. However, I also like to go fastish.
Can I do this with a Sam as well?

I'm pushing 45 years old. A few years ago I had a custom made go-fast
bike built for me. That bike goes fast, but is limited in what it can do.
I also have a Trek 520 Touring bike. This bike, obviously, is built for
touring. Its not very fast, nor very lively. In short, my Trek isn't much
fun to ride. I'm looking for a bike to fit in between these two bikes --
one that will be able to carry a few bags and ride on stone dust bike paths
(such as the Erie Canal path), but one that will not feel sluggish to ride
 (like my Trek).

Most of the time, when I see photos of Sams, the bikes seem to be set up
to be workhorses -- carrying a collection of bags and racks. I want to be
able to do this with a bike (thus the attraction to the bike in the first
place). However, I would like to use noodle bars and go on fast-ish club
and recreational rides as well. In fact, the vast majority of rides will
be 20 - 30 mile out for fun and exercise rides. Is the Sam well suited
to this as well, or will it likely feel more like my Trek 520? Most likely
I would set up a Sam with Noodle bars and tires such as Roly-Poly or Jack
 Browns.

I'm also considering having a custom built randonneur bike -- one that
will be able to carry some load but also feel quick and lively to ride.
However, if the Sam will meet my needs, it certainly would be a less
expensive alternative. I don't think that my body has any proportions that
would make me difficult to fit (5ft, 11 inches tall, PBH 87.5, arm length
35 inches) so I don't think that I *need* to go custom (though it sure is
 fun to do so!).

Any thoughts on whether a Sam would be a good choice would be appreciated.

 Sean

to break in, at least 500-1000 miles (I am around 170 lbs). I have a
new brown B17 Titanium on my 2011 rSogn, and it seems to be more
comfortable right out of the box, though it hasn't broken in (changed
shape) noticeably yet, after perhaps 400 miles. The plain black B17 on
my tandem, which has been there since 2008 and a few thousand miles
still doesn't really seem broken in, but is reasonably comfortable.

Has someone come up with a standard for when to tighten Brooks, as
overtightening seems to be the surest way to kill one? It would be
easy to measure the sag relative to a straight line (string) from nose
to tail, so it would be nice to have a ball park figure, i.e. if more
than 2 cm of sag, tighten until reduced to 1cm.

 Cheers,

 Gernot

make a really nice 10 or 15 speed deraileur bicycle not to mention a

I've finally landed on the Sam, and have been saving to get enough $
to do a complete build. I'm about half way there, and discovered on
their website that it seems the 56cm only comes with a double top
tube. I emailed a few days ago to ask if this is the case, but haven't

So, here's what I'm wondering - is the 56cm Sam only with a double top

really like the look and the idea of the Sam, but honestly don't like
the look of the double top tube at all...and if I'm spending that

As Seth said you can do some rudimetry measuring, and pictures will

I suggested standover as the easiest b/c the only two atlanti with
similar standover are the 56 and 58 and you can tell one from the
other b/c of the wheel size, instantly.

After that the 58 and 61 look different b/c of the head tube size and
the 64 is obviously the biggest.

Unless this is a fairly old one in 66 or 68 but even then the
 standover will be obvious.

Also standover height is easiest and least-finicky to measure.

I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea to go with cross style
interrupter levers either in addition to or instead of the drop bar
brake levers for better control in traffic.
Or is it just a matter of getting used to the drop bar levers?

Re: [RBW] Re: Rivendell MTB? Rare Sighting

2011-06-16 Thread Bruce Baker
Here is the spiel from Larry on this bike for those of you interested

If not, this its a rare riv mady in wisconsin by Waterford
 most were Japan and Taiwan.

Because we are willing and able to swap components to accommodate special
needs and even lower levels of investment, pricing is flexible

If the decision is price based, figure we can get it out for as little as
 $2700
as it is now, it's a $4200 bike and listed at $3700.

If you can appreciate a great opportunity and are a little impulsive, we are
closing in on the end of the first half of 2011 and the end of a fiscal year
and whatever we can show as sold is a help according to the accountants.
Get us just a small deposit by then and we'll pass on a $250 subsidy
Pay for it by then and we'll double it to $500
there's a very small cosmetic dimple (no paint loss) and we will try to post
a photo on the listing.the depth is about ma mm and the area about 2mmx6mm
overall
We have other Rivendells for less and similar 26 bikes like this (both US
and import) for a fraction of the price in case you are more interested in a
rider than a collectible rider.
One thing on which many of our aficionados agree:
if you are planning to ride and enjoy such a gem for the years, even
decades, it will serve you, the difference between the 'get by' bike and the
'wanna have' is usually as little as pennies a week.
and the nicer bikes work better, longer, and hold value and even appreciate
in value better.

Re: [RBW] Considering new pedals

I splurged and bought the white industry platform pedal and put the deep toe
MKS leather toe clip on them and I
think they are great. The GR9 is the same design as the White Industry but
cheaper. Check out the Bruce Gordon webpage he has half clips
that look interesting. I haven't tried WI pedals sans toeclip but I'm
tempted. I wear a size 12 shoe.

the ball of my foot and suspect that always using the same pedal might
be a contributor, so have decided to go for some variety. I have an
old pair of useable Campy rat traps but like the idea of the wider MKS

Has anyone used both of these? What was your experience?

haven't really changed my mind - the front ends have felt pretty squirrely

i've got a canti-Rom with mustache bars and a Hillborne with bullmoose bars

i figured that my lack of enthusiasm for drops was d/t build (very long

anyone like other bars on their QBs, etc?
also wondering about albatross - anyone have pics of those on a QB?
