Looks like this was posted in May 2023 with a price of $3200. So it looks
like a price decrease to me.

[RBW] FS: Clem 45cm & Rosco Platypus 50cm Framesets

2024-02-26 Thread Charlie R
Two Rivendell framesets never built:

Clem L 45cm dark green frameset. This was from the last batch of Clems
with the 26 inch wheelsets purchased maybe two years ago. $1250.

Rosco Platypus 50cm frameset. There were two colors available - purple and
green. This is the green. $1500 - a bit less than I paid after shipping
and taxes.

Both are located in north central Connecticut. Pickup only - No shipping.
Reason for sale is my advancing age and probability of never getting around
to building the bikes up. I do have a recently received Rivendell built
Platypus going to the local bike shop today for it's final adjustments
which undoubtedly will be my last bicycle at age 75. Not a bad way of
ending my riding career.

I have no pictures yet but a simple google will yield some for those who
don't know what they are. Contact me with any questions.

2023-04-13 Thread Charlie
Hey Max,

I'm planning on making the trip down from Portsmouth, NH and will attempt
the ATB route.

Not sure if you remember, but I'm the guy who bought your Sam Hillborne
back in February 2020. Still got it and it's still awesome!

Maybe try the Juniper Ridge.

building a small 26 inch Clem L. which will hopefully satisfy my future
needs.

I purchased the bike at the pre sale price of $1687 including shipping. I
will sell for that amount. Current price is $1800 plus shipping when they
become available at the end of this year or possibly next year.

No shipping - pickup in north central Connecticut only.

Prices are increasing - note the price for this 60 cm Cheviot eBay sale -
$3200+ shipping.. Almost makes $3500 price seem in the ball park.

[RBW] Re: Hunqs. How do I know what year mine is?

2021-04-07 Thread Charlie R
I pre-ordered one of the original Hunqapillars. From what I can recall,
the Hunquapillar was the first Taiwan built Rivendell bicycle after
Rivendell left Toyo Japan. It might have even been a Toyo Taiwan shop. I
don't believe any were made by Toyo Japan. There was a long wait period
and when I finally received the bicycle, Keven told me it was made by
Waterford because the order from Taiwan was just taking to long. I
remember checking the serial number and it fit with the Waterford scheme.
Subsequent batches were made in Taiwan at least for a while and might have
reverted back to Waterford when the batch orders stopped.

The bike was the gray maroon colors. I have a picture somewhere which I
will try to find. I will also try to find my original receipt. A fellow
list member now owns the bike.

On Flickr, there are several photos of the 54 cm prototype, painted
gray with orange head tube. The photos clearly show the pump peg painted
gray, with white lining around it, which matches my bike. The only other
gray/orange 54cm Hunq I'm aware of, has the pump peg the color of the head
tube (ie, orange), as does every Hunqapillar, in any color, in a random
sample from my collection of Hunq photos. The prototype has an orange
 ring
at the bottom of the seat tube lug, while mine is a somewhat sloppy white.

I have always assumed all of (very few) orange trim Hunq's came from
that first batch. Maybe that is not the case.

[RBW] Gus Susie Questions

2020-01-20 Thread Charlie R

I have one ordered and have begun my planning of parts.

Several questions:

What size is the seatpost? I assume one does not come with a frame.

Bottom bracket - Does a frame come with a bottom bracket?

I recall reading somewhere that Rivendell was going to offer two variations
of bottom bracket crank combinations. One would accommodate a single front
crank and the other the usual double triple crankset.

Anybody know if a single crank bottom bracket set will be offered?

[RBW] Re: Riv request for store credits

2018-02-22 Thread Charlie R
I'm looking at this payment more like a Costco membership fee rather than
an excuse to buy another set of handlebars..

As a aside, one of my other favorite companies Really Right Stuff (Camera
accessories), just announced that they were moving from California to Utah
because of the high cost of doing business in California and so their
employees could afford to buy homes where they work. Rivendell's issues
are not isolated. That said, the cost of moving has to be enormous so that
is probably not an option for Rivendell.

I wish Rivendell well..

A Mountain Mixte with room for wide tires (3 inches) and 26 inch wheels in
the smaller sizes. (I'm short and old.)

The North American Handmade Bicycle Show is 20 miles away from me in a few
weeks and I'm really thinking about attending and talking to builders about
such a bike.

Charlie in Connecticut who currently rides a Yves Gomez but wants much
wider tires.

One more comment...

When talking to Roman, he explained the rear drop out as sort of a
horizontal track end with the opening toward the front of the bike as
opposed to the rear of the bike. The end has a slight angle downward. I
hope I understood Roman correctly.

Anyway, bottom line is a single speed should be a fairly easy build
according to Roman.

Note to Roman: Please correct me if I'm wrong.

[RBW] FS: 55cm Yves Gomez - Frame Fork Only - British Racing Green/Cream Insert - Pickup Preferred in CT

2015-08-10 Thread Charlie R
For sale is a 55cm Yves Gomez Frame and Fork (male version of the Betty
Foy). I've owned it for 3 years - rode it about 300 miles the first year
and only one ride since due to a rotator cuff issue and too many other
bikes. See the pictures here:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/7338969@N06/sets/72157656630489489

The bike is currently built but will be sold as frame, headset fork
only. I plan to use the parts (if I sell it) on my Rivendell mixte - if
you poke around the flickr site, you will see pictures of that too. The
older mixte is a 52cm bike and I've have thought for years that it was too
small for me - but as I age and shrink, my thoughts on that have changed
especially if I use a bosco bar when I build it.

I want $1300 for the Yves Frame. I just gave it a somewhat quick once over
and I couldn't find any marks whatsoever on it. No dings, no dents, no
chain suck, no nothing. Yes I know you can buy a new Cheviot for that (if
you want to wait) but don't forget a custom paint job does cost an extra
$350 - I think.

So that is it, but please no bottom feeders, no offers.. No $1000
cash offers like I was recently received on my older Rivendell mixte. And
strong preference to a local pickup..

Private message me if you're still interested..

[RBW] Re: Surly LHT vs vintage MTB

2015-01-09 Thread Charlie
I have used a SURLY CrossCheck with the 700c *Bruce Gordon*Rock n' Road
Tires

for a vacation bike that was carried in a truck to use wherever I happened
to be, paved road - gravel bike trail or whatever was available where I was
to ride on.

 SOMA has a similar frame.

I'm familiar with the geometry differences between the two and I will be

in things like ride quality, the impact of the tubing used in each, etc

This will be an all-rounder bike that is primarily ridden on pavement with
the option to ride on packed dirt, gravel and even double track. I have no
interest in single-track or mountain biking as it currently exists.

Riv content is that my bike project is directly inspired by the 56cm

is a vast amount of experience with this type of bike here.

Re: [RBW] Re: New Sam Hillborne

2014-07-26 Thread Charlie
I AGREE !!!

Grant sold me a Long Low 58 with a very long top tube = NO standover
clerance way too long top tube (could have turned the stem around backward
to fit right). NOW it is with a new happy owner.

A dissenting opinion: I had a 56 and found the 59 cm top tube too long. If
you have a preferred bar and a preferred bar position with respect to the
saddle, there are limits to adjusting reach by adjusting the stem -- I
could not get the Sam's Noodle close enough to the saddle with a normal
stem, even with the Sam's relaxed seat tube angle. I could have used a 5 or
6 cm extension, except that would put too little weight on the front wheel.
I ended up with the bar too high for my liking -- some 5-6 cm above the
saddle, when even for a country' bike I prefer it no more than 2 cm above
 saddle. Top tube length matters!

I personally would very definitely test ride one if you can, though if you
don't mind very high bars, you have less need to worry about top tube
length. Me, I like my bars where I like them -- it's not a variable but a
 given.

The Sam would be an excellent candidate for upright bars, though.

Most people seem happy with the Rivendell method of sizing for their

*If this is your first bike*, just go with their sizing. You can always
use a shorter or longer stem, and rotate the brake levers little more
forward or back on the handlebars (if using drops) to try to buy the
centimeters you need to get the reach comfortable for you. If using other
bars, then it is even easier to fit for reach because you are talking huge
sweep back and rise like on the Albas and Bosco bars.

You Got it.
Castrol R = racing oil was the very best oil for racing cars in the 1960's
probably earlier.Think it came from England.

Can you just use the factory lube of a new chain and apply it over that
when necessary ? I don't prefer to clean chains at all any more, as I find
all the good degreasers are either diesel, kerosene or wd-40. Kinda yuk.
The Soy cleaner that Riv sold I found poor. I had tried some citrus
degreasers in the past and none of them worked either. I'd love to get off
the petro bandwagon altogether for chains and keeping them clean :)

[RBW] Re: 60cm Wilbury on the Bay - Original Rivendell Mixte

2013-10-12 Thread Charlie
I agree the bike looks awkward - replace the stem with a dirt drop and it
would look better. I suspect the owner was real tall.

Grant has said he would build this frame for $3000 since he still has
lugs. Add in the components and replacement cost is $5500+. To those who
expressed concerned that I post this and didn't buy it when the BIN was
2000, I say what were you thinking?

In any event, there is a beautiful red original mixte with good equipment
on the Bay. These don't show up that often. Have no association with
 seller.

Apologies if this message appears twice. Also not sure if links are
permitted so didn't include one - should be very easy to find though.

[RBW] 60 cm Red Wilbury - Original Rivendell Mixte - on the Bay

These don't come up often - looks real good with some nice equipment.

Way big for me and not associated in any way other than a huge mixte
fan
