[RBW] Re: Hip Replacement (not much Riv content)
Bob: Reads like you're well on the way to complete recovery. Good news. I had a complete hip replacement in 2007. It didn't take but a few months to get back on the bike but it took at least a year to feel 95%. Occasionally I still get a some pain in that area but it comes and goes. I'm cycling almost every day. BTW, I was 68 years old in 2007 and two months prior to the accident I cycled across the USA without an accident. The accident occurred about three miles from home. FYI, the accident was the result of a sew-up tire not glued! That mistake cost me big-time. Anyway, as I said, I'm still on the bike. Best regards. Don Genovese Montara, CA U.S.A. Those of you who saw me on my Bike Friday at RAGBRAI 2013 will remember I had a cane with me and limped around when off the bike. I had anterior method surgery on Monday, went home on Wednesday, and today I had my first out of hospital PT session. I am doing well enough that I was allowed to get on a stationary bike just to see how I'd do. I did about five minutes pedaling around 80 RPM with no pain. They had to make me get off (though the soft saddle would have done that soon enough anyway). Luckily my PT guy knows a bit about biking so he didn't argue about setting the saddle high enough. I only had to ask him to move it up higher twice. I'm not sure how long it'll be before I'm cleared to ride a real bike but I don't think it'll be all that long (and I'm going to be learning how to walk for a while because while I've been able to ride for the last two years walking has become more and more difficult). That's it. I'll be back on the road soon. Aloha All! William: Those are great bikes. I have one the same color in a 58cm. I bought the frame in 1996. It looks new and has all Campy components. However, you would have to pry it from my cold, dead hands to get at it. I wish you the best of luck with the sale. Again, a really, really nice bike! Worth the asking price. [RBW] Chris King Headset
What's with the Chris King headset? I've owned at least twenty-five bikes over the last thirty years, none with a Chris King headset. I've never had a head set fail. Perhaps they will require replacement at some time but I don't think they actually break. Why do people pay such outrageous prices for a Chris King. IMO any headset is not worth that price. Only once in ten years of riding the Bertin have I dismounted after a ride and not said to myself, boy, I love this bike. What went wrong that one time? You had to ask, huh. I rolled a sew-up, I think, and went down hard. I don't remember that event or the next ten days. I only remember from the time I was rolled be to rehab after the hip replacement which took place four days after admission. They couldn't operate until the bleeding in my brain stopped. I'm rather surprised by your comment that you've never ridden your LongLow no-hands. I really don't get all the concerns about the geometry of Rivendells that are sometimes expressed on this, and other (e.g.i-BOB) forums. The geometries aren't all that different from some of the classic road bikes of the 1970-80's. Let me add another twist: none of my other six bikes (which I can no-hands) descend as confidently, therefore faster, than the Rivendell Longlow. Yes, the Longlow's tires are slightly wider but I suspect it has more to do with the low bottom bracket shell and perhaps the longer chain stays. Huge difference in the Rivendell. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. I am building up a late 70s style race bike for fun. I am tempted to use sew ups, but given my complete lack of experience, stories such as yours have me thinking maybe not. Glad you are still with us and riding. Thank you. I'm still riding sew-ups on the Bertin, only now I make absolutely sure they are glued on properly. After every ride I clean and inspect the tires and rims. I think that tubular tires are as safe as clinchers If they are mounted correctly. The tire I rolled was not even glued on. It was a new tire I mounted without glue to stretch it, then two weeks later I forgot it wasn't glued. I think that my greatest disappointment has been, after the floppiness and light feeling of the front end ... just doesn't shine like the bikes that remain in my possession Read that and had to respond, likewise, regarding the handling of my 1998 Longlow. In all other respects it is a wonderful ride. However, I ride my circa 70's Bertin far more than the Longlow, although the Longlow has taken me across the USA. Only once in ten years of riding the Bertin have I dismounted after a ride and not said to myself, boy, I love this bike. I don't know, there's something about those Reynolds 531 French bikes.
