Re: [RBW] slipping Silver shifter
I had this problem with the silver shifter on the downtube, no matter how much I tightened it. I finally traced the problem to the fact that the square-hole washer that sits on the frame was slightly too thick for my shifter boss. I sanded it down a little bit with a Dremel tool, and that solved the problem. On Wed, Sep 7, 2011 at 2:05 PM, mho mho...@gmail.com wrote: I have the downtube Silver shifter. Re: [RBW] Route from San Jose to Santa Cruz
My preferred route is to take the Los Gatos Creek trail up to Lexington Reservoir, take Alma Bridge Road along the east side of the reservoir, and take Old Santa Cruz highway to Summit Road, to Soquel San Jose Road, and take that down to Soquel. There is a fair amount of traffic on Soquel San Jose Road as you approach Soquel. The Google Maps route takes you down Mountain Charlie, which I've gone up, but not down. Re: [RBW] Re: Oakland/Berkeley probability of theft?

Leave as little room as possible for squeezing a pump into the ulock. My messenger buddy uses skewers on both, a the smallest possible ulock--barely clears his frame and a parking meter. That's a good way to go, too, but harder sometimes with racked bicycles. At this point, the worst that could happen is theft of your seat. I throw a plastic bag over mine during the night, and will do the same with a seatbag. Seems to do the trick well enough, though of course you can get particularly unlucky--in any town. I used to do the auxilary cable technique to secure my junk, until I saw somebody saw through one with a serrated knife in about 30 seconds. Ironically, in this way, cable locks act as an attractant in my opinion, regardless of the bike. On any given weekend morning I can walk the streets near my apartment and find part of a cable lock on the sidewalk or in the gutter. I ride my Quickbeam as my daily bike, and I do lock it up outside during the work day, as well as out in the city during the weekend and nights. And, I usually have a tool pouch hung from the saddle and a SuperFlash mounted on the seat stay. My locking solution is a heavy cable through both wheels and the saddle rails, which is then locked along with the frame to a bike rack with a Kryptonite u-lock. I think it's the Evolution. I usually take my tool pouch if it's night. During the day, depending on the area, I may leave it on my bike. I always leave the SuperFlash and Cyo on my bike regardless of time or place. The only thing I feel really secure about this set-up is the frame and u-lock situation. I take my chances with the heavy cable, hoping that a bike thief won't try to get through that just to get my Brooks or a Phil hub. One thing that works in my favor is the number of nicely accessorized bikes that have become so popular in the city right now. Re: [RBW] Centering Hub Axles
It doesn't matter if the hub is centered on the axle exactly. The rim is centered between the flanges, and the cone nuts will always be a set distance from the flanges because they seat into the bearing cups. As long as the end of the axle doesn't stick out so much that it interferes with your quick release, you should be good. Just eyeball it. If you're really fastidious, though, a Vernier caliper will measure to one tenth of a millimeter and cost about $10. She naturally grabs the edge of tin to lift her head over to see, and … well, you can imagine the rest of the story. It took a while, but I managed to locate every piece, including all 18 ball bearings. (A magnet duct-taped to stick worked really well for this recovery mission. It also helped that each bearing was still greased and not anxious to roll all over the garage floor.) I down- loaded the schematic of the hub from the Shimano site, and in-fact had recovered all the various bits and pieces. I threw everything into a can of Orange, scrubbed, then rinsed and sun dried on the deck. Then, all a-fluster (still angry at myself for being so careless knowing the kids were here), and without thinking, I removed the one cone from the axle to carefully clean all the threads. Yeah, that's the way it is for me too. There are small indentations in the saddle where my sit bones land. Re: [RBW] Re: Chris K's Roadeo
Nice looking bike! I remember test riding one of those when they came out, but it wasn't different enough from my Univega at the time to justify buying. I eventually got a Columbus SL Guerciotti, and then... 14 years later, a Romulus. As far as the downtube shifters go -- once you're used to them, it's a non-issue. Kind of like driving a manual transmission car. If you're happy with barends, though, those are fine too. Re: [RBW] Re: Tubesets: Rambouillet v Roadeo
-- Forwarded message -- From: gr...@rivbike.com grantmill...@gmail.com Date: Jul 9 2009, 1:21 pm Subject: Frame-Bike Plans (some) To: RBW Owners Bunch Newlite Roadbike. TheROADEO---final name, final spelling, thanks for all your input and don't take offense. This is really Mark's bike, by which I mean he asked for it/suggested it as a bike for clubbies. He's a club rider a couple of days a week, and rides his cross bikes--which to me are light enough, at 19-20lb, even with fatty tires (and he's still the fastest by a good margin, and the humblest). But he sees his fellow clubbies buying road bikes with carbon this and that, and was thinking hmm, they should get a nice lugged steel bike, and if we made it light enough and roadynuff they probably would. Originally,'twas gunnabe for short reach brakes, but nobody here really rides with those anymore, so, with some input from Jay's, they'll use standard reach brakes, which means...about 56mm reach, about like the 'bouillet. TUBING: The goal is a clubbie bike, so it's going to be clubbie light, and it should, ideally, be ridding by somebody who is, if not clubbie light, at least knows how to ride light. A Nureyev-like 225-pounder who lifts over bumps and veers around pothholes and rides 32mm tires at 85psi rides lighter than a Nagurski-like 150-pounder who rides 23mm tires at 115psi and hits everything with a stiff body and locked arms. So, it's hard to give this bike a weight limit. I should point out that you aren't buying an engine with this bike; you're supplying the engine, and it's good to somewhat match the engine's weight with the frame's weight. OK: Up to 57cm, the main tube butts are 0.65, with 0.4bellies. Bigger than that, 0.8 butts with 0.6bellies. It's superstrong heat-treated steel, so strength isn't much of an issue. Flex is more of an issue, but nobody really anymore believes that flexless frames are the goal (I never have). A more rigid frame matters if you're toting weight, but not as much if you aren't, and as we introduce this as a superlight clubbie-bike, its flex-under-a-touring-load shouldn't matter. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Which Side Pull Brakes for Jack Browns?
Oh -- sorry -- mis-read the previous post. Yeah, 65mm -- that's really long. The effective brake reach on Jim's Ram is 54mm, and there are several brakes available that are compatible (including the long-reach Ultegras shown). The AHH has a 65mm brake reach, and Tektro's R556 is the only brake caliper in production that has this reach. There isn't a Shimano alternative to the Tektro. -- -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Which Side Pull Brakes for Jack Browns?
I think you might consider trying out the Tektro Big Mouths and deciding for yourself whether you think they're too flexy or not. I use them on my Romulus with Jack Brown tires, and I've never noticed any problem with them whatsoever. Horace. In light of recent comments about the flexiness of the Tektro Big Mouths, I am curious whether there are any other standard reach dual pivots availabel - that would not require the tire be deflated to clear the brake pads when removing/installing the wheel. The standare reach Shimano Ultegras open up to only about 30mm with Cane Creek levers fully opened. Any ideas? Thanks. Yeah, I went to the Riv site to look at that. I guess one would use an IRD freewheel with the Phil hub. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
