We did this to our Honda Fit. The Class 1 hitch has a maximum

Re: [RBW] Best/Favorite/Most Radical Cantilever Brakes

2011-09-17 Thread Horace
After trying a few different cantilevers on my Quickbeam, I finally
settled on using V-brakes. I did have to switch levers to do this. I
know that many people on this list disdain V-brakes, but I find that
they are excellent for braking, especially in wet weather, and I don't
have any problems modulating the stopping power. I also find them
easier to set up and adjust than cantilevers.

Re: [RBW] slipping Silver shifter

I had this problem with the silver shifter on the downtube, no matter
how much I tightened it.

I finally traced the problem to the fact that the square-hole washer

sanded it down a little bit with a Dremel tool, and that solved the
problem.

Re: [RBW] Help - can't ride for the lack of a bolt

2011-08-06 Thread Horace
It's a metric M6 bolt and nut, 20mm.

You can probably get this at the local hardware store -- it's a common size.

 frame.

Do I just walk into a local shop and ask for a generic seat post
binder bolt? 5mm? 6mm? What do I tell them?

I could bring the bike down there but the logistics of that are more
than I care to deal with at the moment. I would ride it, but ... you
 see the problem.

I'm sure this is an easy fix and I am hoping to avoid a wild goose
 chase for the wrong bolt.

650C and 650B are certainly close enough in diameter that you could use the

all the bike shop had. You probably want something like this:

Re: [RBW] Route from San Jose to Santa Cruz

2011-01-28 Thread Horace
My preferred route is to take the Los Gatos Creek trail up to
Lexington Reservoir, take Alma Bridge Road along the east side of the
reservoir, and take Old Santa Cruz highway to Summit Road, to Soquel
San Jose Road, and take that down to Soquel. There is a fair amount of
traffic on Soquel San Jose Road as you approach Soquel.

The Google Maps route takes you down Mountain Charlie, which I've gone
up, but not down. It's narrow, steep, and has rough pavement. It's a
popular route northbound (its steep grades attract a lot of climbers),
but I don't hear of people taking it in the southbound direction much.

I've taken Highway 9 too. It is okay early on weekend mornings, but
there is quite a bit more traffic than Old Santa Cruz Highway/Soquel
San Jose.

Horace.

Trail and kind of goes along the highway (17). I also found a route
that goes to Saratoga, then up to the ridge on Big Basin Way and then
follows HWY 9 to Santa Cruz.

We would like to avoid cars as much as possible, and enjoy some good
scenery. Since we are staying at a hotel, we won't be carrying too
much stuff. I am thinking about taking my Bleriot, which has just
received a VO front constructeur rack and a Campagne bag (I had
sitting around). She will probably take her Trek 620.

 It should be fun.

Re: [RBW] RBW style bike security

2011-01-25 Thread Horace
A good approach is to use both a U-lock AND a cable with its own lock.
Thus, a thief would require two different sets of tools to steal the
bike, and would likely just pick an easier target.

Bike theft was a big annoyance when I lived in Berkeley. Things got
better when I moved to the suburbs.

locking different wheels). Leave as little room as possible for squeezing a
pump into the ulock. My messenger buddy uses skewers on both, a the smallest
possible ulock--barely clears his frame and a parking meter. That's a good
way to go, too, but harder sometimes with racked bicycles.

At this point, the worst that could happen is theft of your seat.

I throw a plastic bag over mine during the night, and will do the same with
a seatbag. Seems to do the trick well enough, though of course you can get
 particularly unlucky--in any town.

I used to do the auxilary cable technique to secure my junk, until I saw
somebody saw through one with a serrated knife in about 30 seconds. Since
then, I just keep it all dirty and park where there are eyes on the street.

I've had plenty of lights stolen, but just the cheap kind (well, 30 dollars
isn't super-cheap, but it isn't a phil hub). Knock on wood, never a bicycle.

Re: [RBW] Re: Sacramento Blogger Profiles His Her Quickbeams

2010-08-20 Thread Horace
With the SKS fenders:

1) Don't cut down the fender stays after installation.
2) Instead of putting the plastic caps on the fender stays, I ground
all the edges off the tips with a dremel tool.
3) I carry an 8mm wrench as part of my tool kit (I started carrying
the Park MT-1 tool).

To fix a flat I loosen the fender stays with the 8mm wrench and the
rear wheel comes out fine; after the wheel is back on, I re-tighten
the stays.

Re: [RBW] Man-Topic [Shaving Facial Hair]

2010-08-11 Thread Horace
I knew this topic would eventually show up on the list. :-)

The odd arms race in multi-blade cartridge razors mirrors the constant
increase in bicycle cassette sizes from 5-speed to 6- to 7- to 8- to 9- to
10- to 11-

In 2004 The Onion ran an article making fun of this, predicting that
eventually there would be five-blade cartridges.
http://www.theonion.com/articles/fuck-everything-were-doing-five-blades,11056/
(salty language warning)

Campy and Shimano are up to, what, 11 speeds now? Is that not ridiculous?

I use a Merkur classic safety razor and it is like a fine single-speed bike.

I am not one to shave often. When I do it's for two distinct reasons:

 1. I look up, while brushing teeth, and jump with fright at what I
see looking back at me in the mirror.

 Or...

 2. My wife and/or daughter tell me to [because I repulse them].

 Fair enough.

For years, and because I have a 'Stache, I've simply used an 'lectric
trimmer [no, not an actual electric shaver--more of an electric beard
trimmer] and it leaves a fair amount of stubble... so I am not really
ever -that- shaved right after I shave.

So, I grew [pun] tired of the stubbled look and began a search for a
non-electric shaver that doesn't look an Apple product or like a Casio
Baby-G wristwatch, or is not disposable... and it took a minute
too. And then I found a site called Classic Shaving... wow, the
choices were about as endless as looking for a new tire pump on a walk
 through Interbike.

In the end, I selected a nice German shaver, a Merkur [just like my
dad used when I was a youngster], some blades, a nice brush, mug and
some cream. Cost around $160.00 for the whole setup, but I figure
it'll save money over time, space in land fills and I can have a
better shave [when I remember to do it].

Anyway else here shave 'Old Skool'?

Was tempted to enter my toes into the world of Straight Razors but the
prices for those [plus all the additional accessories] -and the
thoughts of all the failures while in the Learning Curve stage Re:
loss of facial skin- put the kibosh on that.

PS-- Guess this could be a Lady-Topic too [but I doubt many women
would own up to having facial hair that needs shaving].

You can probably use an open-comb double-edge safety razor, like this:

If you really want to try a straight razor without the huge up-front

I've tried a similar version to this, and went back to my safety razor. The
straight razor gave a really close shave, but it was too scary for me.

I use a Sharpie. I've found that the proper height varies a bit from year to

at most. A centimeter sounds huge to me, so it does not surprise me that you
notice a dramatic difference there.

WOW, what a difference it made. Everything feels 'right' and lined up.

Re: [RBW] Rear Derailleur Capacity Limits

You've exceeded the capacity of the derailleur.

You said it was rated at 38t, and you have 43t total. The behavior you
describe is expected. Well, expected by me. Other people may have
differing ideas of how rear derailleur capacity is stated.

The top left section of this page discusses it:

The capacity is rated at 38t. I'm using a 24/36/48 and 13/32 FW for 43
total. The issue I'm having is when in the 24t ring, and either the 28
or 32t cog, the pulley wheels are too close to the cogs. When spinning
forward, I don't notice it, but if I spin the pedal backwards, the
pulleys make a grinding noise, as they are right up against the cogs.
I have the angle screw at the max, but it helped only slightly with
the 28t cog, but not the 32. My chain length is proper.

Having this wide of range of gearing is new to me, so my first
assumption is that I've exceeded the capacity of the RD.  If anyone
has an answer, I'd appreciate it.

fail, the tool for removing your cluster (FW or cassette) is needed
for on-road spoke replacement.  OTH, a well built, touring grade wheel

 I jink to the left.

So the bosses seem a shade too long for the brakes, both front and
 rear

Has anyone else noticed this with the CR720?
Should I add a thin washer under the nut? Under the brake?
Is this the reason I get brake chatter on the front, or is that the
 pads still being brand new?
Would moving the spring-end to the tighter hole keep the brakes from
 rattling as much?

Also, regarding braking power, they seem the same as the old brakes.
They're high profile, so I've got a high cable yoke. It can't get much
higher. I want a stronger front brake with a higher yoke, since I
can't lower the stock low-profile brake's yoke any further, due to the
 M12's mounting rod.

Have you considered V-brakes? I tried the CR720 on my Quickbeam for a

Re: [RBW] Centering Hub Axles

2010-05-28 Thread Horace
It doesn't matter if the hub is centered on the axle exactly. The rim
is centered between the flanges, and the cone nuts will always be a
set distance from the flanges because they seat into the bearing cups.
As long as the end of the axle doesn't stick out so much that it
interferes with your quick release, you should be good. Just eyeball
it.

If you're really fastidious, though, a Vernier caliper will measure to
one tenth of a millimeter and cost about $10. They're great to have
around for other bike maintenance tasks (especially to answer the
question, is this crown race ISO or JIS?).

Over skips my four-year-old granddaughter to see what's happening with
grandpa. She naturally grabs the edge of tin to lift her head over to
see, and … well, you can imagine the rest of the story.

It took a while, but I managed to locate every piece, including all 18
ball bearings. (A magnet duct-taped to stick worked really well for
this recovery mission.  It also helped that each bearing was still
greased and not anxious to roll all over the garage floor.) I down-
loaded the schematic of the hub from the Shimano site, and in-fact had
recovered all the various bits and pieces. I threw everything into a
can of Orange, scrubbed, then rinsed and sun dried on the deck.  Then,
all a-fluster (still angry at myself for being so careless knowing the
kids were here), and without thinking, I removed the one cone from the
axle to carefully clean all the threads.  They sure do look shiny and
great now, but I soon realized that I can't readily center my axle/
wheel without a whole bunch of trial and error adjusting… on, off… on,
 off… etc.

Tips, techniques, and short-cuts VERY MUCH appreciated…

Assuming indexed thumbies, on the tops of the bars, using a Rapid Rise
rear derailleur will do the opposite of what you want. That is,
pushing the right lever forward will cause the bike to go into a
higher gear. My wife's bike is set up this way (with a Rapid Rise rear

They allow for cleaner cable routing; the cables are shorter, and it keeps
the handlebars neat; they're less likely to bump into my knees; they're less

Moreover, on a mid- to small-sized frame, with the handlebars slightly below
saddle height and riding on the hoods, reaching to the handlebar ends is
about the same as the distance reaching to the downtube shifters (I ride a

Nice looking bike! I remember test riding one of those when they came out,
but it wasn't different enough from my Univega at the time to justify

As far as the downtube shifters go -- once you're used to them, it's a
non-issue. Kind of like driving a manual transmission car. If you're happy
with barends, though, those are fine too. I left the barends on my Romulus
for the first year and a half, but when I changed the handlebar tape, I put

Moreover, on a mid- to small-sized frame, with the handlebars slightly
below saddle height and riding on the hoods, reaching to the handlebar ends
is about the same as the distance reaching to the downtube shifters (I ride
 a 59).

Re: [RBW] Re: Carboon Bashing- was: Riv resurrecting and selling crashed frames

I don't think anybody suggests that EVERY carbon frame or fork will fail in
the next XX years. In fact, probably a TINY fraction of a percent MIGHT.

I also don't think that EVERY Toyota on the road is going to accelerate
unexpectedly and uncontrollably within the next XX years either.

The point is that if the consequences are severe enough, then it's not much
fun playing the numbers game.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tubesets: Rambouillet v Roadeo

-- Forwarded message --

From: gr...@rivbike.com grantmill...@gmail.com

Subject: Frame-Bike Plans (some)

To: RBW Owners Bunch

Newlite Roadbike. TheROADEO---final name, final spelling, thanks

for all your input and don't take offense.

This is really Mark's bike, by which I mean he asked for it/suggested

it as a bike for clubbies. He's a club rider a couple of days a week,

and rides his cross bikes--which to me are light enough, at 19-20lb,

even with fatty tires (and he's still the fastest by a good margin,

and the humblest). But he sees his fellow clubbies buying road bikes

with carbon this and that, and was thinking hmm, they should get a

nice lugged steel bike, and if we made it light enough and roadynuff

they probably would.

Originally,'twas gunnabe for short reach brakes, but nobody here

really rides with those anymore, so, with some input from Jay's,

they'll use standard reach brakes, which means...about 56mm reach,

about like the 'bouillet.

TUBING: The goal is a clubbie bike, so it's going to be clubbie light,

and it should, ideally, be ridding by somebody who is, if not clubbie

light, at least knows how to ride light. A Nureyev-like 225-pounder

who lifts over bumps and veers around pothholes and rides 32mm tires

at 85psi rides lighter than a Nagurski-like 150-pounder who rides 23mm

tires at 115psi and hits everything with a stiff body and locked arms.

So, it's hard to give this bike a weight limit. I should point out

that you aren't buying an engine with this bike; you're supplying the

engine, and it's good to somewhat match the engine's weight with the

frame's weight.

OK: Up to 57cm, the main tube butts are 0.65, with 0.4bellies. Bigger

than that, 0.8 butts with 0.6bellies. It's superstrong heat-treated

steel, so strength isn't much of an issue. Flex is more of an issue,

but nobody really anymore believes that flexless frames are the goal

(I never have). A more rigid frame matters if you're toting weight,

but not as much if you aren't, and as we introduce this as a

superlight clubbie-bike, its flex-under-a-touring-load shouldn't

matter.

I've used Zoom Brahma bars on rides up to 100 miles, but I'm not sure if
