I'd buy a singlespeed Riv sight unseen as long as it has the following
items in order of importance (1-6 are mandatory):
1. No toe overlap in small sizes (I ride 54cm AHH)
2. Pretty. Lugs. Wet paint. Traditional triangle without too much
sloop. Gorgeous forks.
3. Fun. Great
Yes. My commute ranges from 5-25 miles each way in LI/NYC. There has been
much good advice shared above, here are my thoughts on the topic:
Lights, back-up lights and reflectors. You must be seen.

Hey, Clay,
Sorry to hear about your bum knee and good luck with the REI stuff. I
realize my reply is a tad late to the game but I must plug the Levi's

because they are jeans, they stretch so they are comfortable like good
90/92 rules are complete horseshit. I personally love #12 (
http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/#12 ) and #5 (

conflict because if I was a bit harder, I would be able to get by with a single
steed, rendering #12 moot. A
Agreed. I jam my Hilsen (no lawyer lip) with SKS Longboards onto my Yakima
Steelhead. A Boa sounds like a great solution - just make sure it is not
loose. It really takes a lot to screw it up.
The bigger risk to bikes on roof racks is backing into the garage with the

Choices. They are wonderful but come with the cost of having to decide. Lucky
for you that all the choices sound like winners.
Regarding the 55cm/700c Hilsen, I agree that they are available, Keven at Riv
offered it as an anternative to the 54cm/650b, which i choose instead. I

Ape hangers would look badass on an Atlantis and they might allow you to hang
on with your finger tips. I don't know how they would affect the elbow but
they are cheap and may be worth a try. However, if you are 5'8ish, you should
give up, grow a long beard, get a recumbent, and donate the
I have three bikes with SON hubs, a Brompton with 11k+ miles, a Bike Friday
and a Rivendell AHH each with a couple thousand miles. I ride with my
lights on day and night so cannot tell if there is material drag or not.
My SON hubs have performed flawlessly.
I also have a Shimano Alfine

I love fancy bike stuff. I also do lots of dumb shit (going down stairs,
jamming my bike onto my roof rack, wheelies, etc.) The SKS chromoplastic (or
whatever) mudguards on my AHH always seem to bounce back. I'm quite certain
aluminum or steel mudguards would be completely destroyed by now.

I have been to trophy bikes several times while visiting Philly. They
carry a good selection of practical bikes from Bromptions to Waterfords and
the staff is knowledgeable.

Personally, I really like the idea of d) all of the above. I love my Homer
Hilsen and look forward to the day when i find the right constructeur to
build a custom fully integrated bike just for me.
Peace.

When I got my AHH last year I decided to order it as recommended by the chef,
Keven was the chef in my case. As such it was my first bike without computer
and with flat pedals, a basket, friction shifting and cloth tape.
The lack of a computer may have reduced my fitness because I am much less
I'm looking for a gift from my brother. Hurricane Sandy flooded his house
and sank his boat - he could use a little pick-me-up. His primary use
will be riding around town, around campsites and some trails riding. I
would consider any complete Riv that would fit him. His PBH is 82.5cm.

Finding and buying and fixing old bikes is a hobby, it as a very different one
than riding bikes. Riding a bike can be transportation, exercise, a hobby or
any combination but it is very different than finding, buying and fixing bikes.

Ha. I have my Surly Big Dummy all prepared and ready to go. I told my
wife, I'll take the kids on the Dummy; you take my Rivendell (A. Homer

Hopefully it doesn't come to that.
Peace.

Hilarious! The idea of S24O sounds so appealing until I realize that it
includes sleeping in the woods voluntarily. Jim, you may joke about wild

expecting them.
The bike looks awesome-enjoy!

Battery versus generator - I hate to worry about charging or replacing

I've got a Mark's rack on my AHH, it fits great and has a tab int he front for
mounting a headlight. I have a Supernova E3 mounted on mine.
Good luck.

I took ownership of an AHH in June and have average five 25 mile legs /

sometimes one way each. My Riv replaced a Merlin Agilis and it didn't
impact my commute time at all BUT it is much more a pleasant ride on the

Hey, all,
I've been reading RBW Owners Bunch for a couple of weeks and this is my

I took the plunge and ordered a Rivendell, it arrived a couple of weeks
ago. A 54cm AHH with 650B wheels.
A bicycle has been part of my commute for the past 10 years or so. I have
