[RBW] Re: Chacos vs. Bedrocks

2019-08-18 Thread Justin, Oakland
Depends on which Bedrocks. The non-3d versions are very very thin compared
to Chacos. Plus the retention doesn't feel as LOCKED IN as Chacos feel. The
toe strap takes some getting used to but in the long run I think they are a
great adventure sandal. I have non-3d Cairns and would definitely get the
Cairn with the thicker sole in the future.

Hey!
Been off the Google Groups/Out of the Country/Prepping to swap careers.

Each campsite is regulated for 10 people + 3 cars. Clearly there's more
interest and from what I've seen there will be plenty of room for all of
us. Just be nice, be cool and don't be weird.

If you want to bring a car, PM me and I'll get you a pass. First come first
served.

To be clear - I'm just facilitating these campsites and since my name is on
them I am going to go out there and say: be respectful, be kind and be
aware. If you are disrespectful, unkind or unaware I'll let you know. If
you can't stop you'll be asked to leave.

I use a Vario, my wife uses a melita filter system for convenience. I had a
Kalita and enjoyed it but the availability of filters at the time (8-10 years
ago) was rough.

Baratza grinders are serviceable and I recently replaced an adjustment ring on
mine that was broke. I’ve had the motor rebuilt before when it was slipping.

The Wacoco handpresso makes incredibly decent espresso for what it is.

I’m going to try the Kinu hand grinders.

[RBW] Re: Balance Bikes for Bouncing Babies

2019-03-11 Thread Justin, Oakland
Thanks so much!!

So far I’m looking at the Woom and the Yuba flipflop. Both appeal to me
regardless of price and the Yuba has the extra appeal of a basket and rack and
longevity. She’s an early walker, 95% height kid so I’m looking earlier than
most. I measured her inseam and she’d be a fit on the Woom but maybe a bit
short for the Yuba right now.

My holdback on the Yuba is weight and tires. I’d much rather have pneumatic but
oh well.

Anyone put Paul brakes on the Woom yet?

They sell 2x compatible versions of the rear derailleur with and without

They don’t sell an advent specific front derailleur which leads me to believe
any 2x front mech would work with their setup. Sadly no matching front thumb
shifter but there is a front brifter shifter.

Re: [RBW] Indexing 10sp big cassette

2019-02-22 Thread Justin, Oakland
Definitely a case of shifter/derailleur mismatch. You need either the
Microshift Thumbie in black, a 10 speed mountain shifter or a Tanpan
shiftmate. Or - get a new derailleur. Or switch it to friction.

Friction is simplest
Tanpan is lowest barrier to indexing
Microshift Thumbie is most analogous to what you have
10 speed mountain shifter is next
New derailleur is most intensive IMO

Checking their conversion pages:
https://www.dtswiss.com/en/support/conversion-charts/end-cap-solution-mtb-rear/
it's evident that nearly all of their MTB hubs are convertible to 5mm QR
and that includes their XD driver hubs. You just need to find the right
parts (which is fairly easy actually).

Basically any 142 spaced hub that can be converted via endcaps that also
has an XD driver can be used in a 135 frame since 142 and 135 are the
different axle analogs to each other in terms of width. I have a DT Swiss
350 hub that I have converted from QR to 142 TA and currently have the kit
to convert it to XD just in case. It is 6 bolt disc however.

White stocks their XD conversion kit here:
http://www.whiteind.com/xd-driver-conversion

I hope you can get them to sell you a non-disc hub with that stock so you
don't have to pay extra. Or you could get their CLD hub here:
https://www.whiteind.com/cld for centerlock, 135 QR and XD driver
compatibility.

been amazing. I haven't however been able to ride as much as I'd like on my
Saluki, my Trek 710 or my Salsa El Mariachi.

As the Saluki holds the largest place in my heart and is the least
replaceable bike I'm wondering about moving the currently front mounted
kid-seat to the Saluki, knowing she'll move to the rear in the next 6
months to a year. The concern/worry is that the 930 is so stout that I
can't tell she's there, aside from her cute little helmeted head being at
perfect height for a mid ride smooch. Would the Saluki offer a similar
stout/secure/stable experience? For reference I would be moving the whole
"cockpit" of Bosco bars and the like over to the Saluki and getting a CrMo
stem of some sort.

Any thoughts? Would I get a wagging feeling while riding?

Ideally I would own 3 bikes - MTB, Town/Commute/Kid, Roadie.

Thanks!

This is exactly what I’d like to do but absolutely refuse to do myself. Ideally
I’d have it done when I get my Saluki modded for braze on centerpulls, a rear

Until then it’s a hodgepodge of snaking and wrapping.

I would think about silicone to the ferules or the brake/shifter housing (or

>From the ad:
“Rivendell Mixte - Wilbury - Frame & Fork 52 cm New In Box

I purchased this frame from Rivendell 10 - 12 years ago and never built it. It
is a 52 cm mixte and has never had a component mounted on it except for the
headset which was installed by Rivendell. I have since purchased another
Rivendell mixte (Yves Gomez) and no longer have a need for the original mixte.

Rivendell had one run of these bikes built by Toyo of Japan. They were badged
either Glorius or Wilbury -- this is a Wilbury. Future runs were never done
because of the expense and subsequent mixte production was moved to Taiwan.

This bike is known for its exquisite lugs. See the pictures.

Frame size is 52cm. Wheel size is 650b.

[RBW] FotR: Updates, info, questions

2019-01-18 Thread Justin, Oakland
Hey folks,
As was alluded to earlier I was able to get campgrounds for the weekend of
July 19-21 at Devil's Gulch Group Camps in Samuel P Taylor Park.
Location: https://goo.gl/maps/Qhv67LvKJLT2
Park Info: http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=469
Please read the info there
Camp site details:
- Limit of 10 folks per site. I'm thinking that we can be fudgey with that
number because we are coming on bikes and are very good stewards and
citizens and will be on our best behavior
- 3 Vehicles allowed per site if folks want to have family come that aren't
bike-riders or just want to drive to the camp/ride
- Drinking water & Restrooms are available
- Tents only, no hammocks

Now on to activities & other things:
Are you going for sure? Register here: https://rbwxxv.eventbrite.com

Many folks said they would want to lead a ride of some sort. Would a sign
up via a Google Form make sense?
Do we want to group-coordinate food? Drinks? Campfire supplies? Or do we
want to do it individually?

Any other considerations I have yet to bring up?

[RBW] Re: Seeking wisdom of 29+ bikepacking vs. 2.1”

2019-01-11 Thread Justin, Oakland
I think that if you can do plus tires you won't regret them for the type of
hilly-bike-riding/packing that most folks here tend to do. The larger tires
give you traction on the uphills and whatever is lost can be made up with
intelligent gearing, muscle and the speed gained on the downhill. Downhill
they feel much more surefooted and grippier while also providing enough
cush for most to go faster than they would with "narrow" 29r tires.

Now 38mm is narrow for road and 2.1 is narrow for dirt (at least for me)!

Ignore the marketing and focus on the wares.

for Friday July 19th - Sunday July 21st at Samuel P Taylor Park! There's
many ways up and back and lots of great rides to lead starting from their
group sites.

I want to move forward with booking camp site and such but want to make
sure there's no "OMG WHY THAT DAY AND PLACE" concerns.
