I love that Waterford. My size too! Did you have it made or found it
second-hand? Do you happen to know the stack/reach on it?

Yep I plan on going back again (will be my third year). See u there :-D I
was there with my sister and she has already sold the event to some of her

races/events like that, but it's a special one for sure.

Looking forward to seeing/reading more about your FR escapades!

Any suggestions for different FD? May need different chain rings

I've got some stuff to change on it but i am super excited.

The grey 'homer' is indeed a 650b canti bike. Prob a saluki as Bill
 suggested. Paint was really nice.

The Ram also had 650b wheels with long reach brakes at the bottom of
the slots. Also had nice, presumably custom, paint.

The Curt was a beautiful bike. Had 700x38 tires with fenders. Looked
like it would clear a little bigger with fenders. Maybe a 42 or 45 without.

The Riv custom had 26" wheels. Tires that were on it were 35 or 38.
Again could probably fit a 42 or 45 but not much more.

All the bikes are in the 60cm range with top tubes between 57-59. The
seller, Steve, was super nice and I'm sure would be happy to provide
whatever info someone may be looking for if you give him a ring. He didn't
seem keen on shipping the bikes because of how big of a pain it is (i feel
him on that), but I bet he'd be open to delivering to a local shop to
 arrange shipping.

I used to have that same Ritchey crank, it was pretty nice. That said, this
model was the subject of a recall - was this one's left arm replaced as
part of that?

Might be good info to include.

I used to roll on that bar (on a different bike with a shorter TT); it

[RBW] WTB: Single or Set of Shimano 10spd Bar End Shifters

2022-02-15 Thread Kieran J
Hi all,

Looking for mainly a right/rear Shimano 10spd bar end shifter (SL-BS78).
Would also consider a set L+R if any are out there.

Let me know if you have a single/set to sell.

Thanks!
Kieran

Re: [RBW] Re: Rambouillet tire clearance

2021-06-18 Thread Kieran J
I also had an orange Ram and the max tire clearance under Tektro R539
brakes was about 37mm. Slightly less vertical clearance in the back versus
the front.

[RBW] Re: Schmidt Wire with B Lights?

2021-05-07 Thread Kieran J
Agree with Ian about ordering what you need from PWC. They have everything
you need (and then some) and are very cheerful to deal with.

I find the B wiring easier to work with because it's smaller in diameter
and the conductors are easy to separate and terminate. The Schmidt co-ax
requires a bit more effort and precision to put the connectors on. The main
tool you need is some decent wire strippers from just about any hardware
store.

I have never bothered to use solder to terminate them. Even sloppy crimps
with pliers will do the job with some heat shrink over it. It's good skill
to have, even at the 'crapsmanship' level, if you plan to run custom
lengths inside fork legs, inside fender lips, etc.

[RBW] FS: 68cm Creamsicle Orange Rivendell Rambouillet F/F/HS/Brakes

2021-05-05 Thread Kieran J
Hi all,

Thinking about putting my 68 orange Ram frameset up for sale. I've owned
this since around 2014 and having a hard time moving it on but so it goes.

Listing it as a F/F/HS along with a set of Tektro R539 brakes.

66cm C-C seat tube
62cm C-C top tube
Fits a 700x35c tire comfortably

It's in overall decent condition with plenty of wear and tear. Most
notably, it has a minor ripple in the top tube where something bumped it
and some damage to the seat cluster as well (all prior to my ownership).
It's visible but nothing serious. Also has some chainsuck wear and scrapes
near the BB. The original Ultegra 6500 headset is in good shape and the
brakes show some rust on the springs and they need new pads.

Pics here: Google Link

Thinking USD$700 plus shipping within North America. Probably via
BikeFlights but I don't know exactly how much it would cost. I have some
bike boxes and I'm happy to box it up myself.

Send me a PM if you are interested.

Thanks,
Kieran

SUNXCD also makes a similar set of arms that you can pair with some TA

Another option is the SunXCD arms with some 50.4BCD TA rings in the tooth

Re: [RBW] Re: Vaughn's custom for sale

2020-03-02 Thread Kieran J
I like your multiple choices, Bill. Thanks for laying things out in your
distinctive rhetorical style!

I feel like there is merit in all besides B. I know Nobilette builds a
variety of frames, including as the go-to builder for Jan's RH superbikes.
Obviously there is journeyman skillset there and the cost reflects this.
Incidentally, if I were to order a custom Riv, it would probably be nearly
identical to this one (albeit in 67cm).

That said, I have had two (less fancy) customs built for me simply because
the bike I wanted did not exist in the world in my size or desired style.
Besides the fact that both of them cost approximately 1/3rd that of a Riv
custom, I went that route for the reason you laid out: they were built for
me, under my direction. I love them both.

As you said, paying nearly full premium price for a blemished not-custom
custom wouldn't do for me. That said, if a dead ringer of the original
buyer (and presumably the secondary buyer of this frameset) is presented
with the opportunity to purchase the custom they would have ordered anyways
at a small discount and no wait time, the modest flaws could very well be a
moot point.

2020-02-28 Thread Kieran J
That's a lotta chedda for someone else's blemished custom frame. There's
something perversely decadent about a Riv shop person being able to afford
something like this (in addition to several other Rivs) and then Riv
starting again from scratch to fix a couple minor issues. Only in Rivland I
guess.

[RBW] Thin Gripster alternatives?

2019-12-02 Thread Kieran J
I have multiple sets of the VP Thin Gripster/VP-001. Great pedals but they
have all developed clicking noises in the bearings. Some of mine have
relatively low miles so I'm wondering about their longevity. I note that
RBW sells a bearing service kit but IMO it's too expensive.

Have others experienced this? Did you service the pedals or replace them
with something else? If so, what?

Thanks,

Kieran

One of my pet peeves is other cyclists or pedestrians NOT doing the

[RBW] Re: Roadeo/STI bars

2019-04-08 Thread Kieran J
The main consideration for changing to STI shifting with the Noodles is
reach. The Noodles have a longer reach than most modern bars and some
modern shifters (Shimano notably) are quite 'long'.
If you ride on the hoods a lot and are used to using your Noodles with
smaller brake levers, the bigger brifters may feel a little unwieldy.

You can either put on a shorter stem or get a handle bar with shorter
ramps.

[RBW] Re: Toronto Recommendations.

2019-04-02 Thread Kieran J
Toronto is a great city to visit for many reasons, but bike-related stuff
and cycling is arguably not one of them. When I lived there I did a lot of
commuting, but nearly all good riding is outside of town. That said, using
a bike to get from place to place in the downtown area and waterfront is a
neat way to see the city.

For bike shops, Urbane Cyclist and Hoopdriver are the main Bobish/unique
shops I used to frequent. Urbane is central so you could check that out. HD
is way in the West end and is probably not worth a long haul out there. You
might also check out Velocolour if you give Noah/Suzanne a heads-up in
advance. It's a pretty neat place to visit (depending on their schedule)
and they have some swag for sale for a souvenir. Same thing with Bicycle
Specialities/Mariposa, although I was only there once years back when VC
was located there, and it is somewhat far out in the East end.

Personally, I would focus on food, culture, exploring the neighbourhoods
like Kensington Market, Queen St. West, Roncesvalles/High Park. Restaurant
selection is virtually limitless - hard to know even where to start. Lots
of great coffee and some good breweries too.

It is a flat city so getting around on a too-small Bikeshare (aren't you a
tall dude?) shouldn't be too bad. Also, wear a helmet and take lots of back
streets. Toronto drivers are nutty nuts.

Re: [RBW] Enable my bicycle buying issues!

2019-03-19 Thread Kieran J
Looks like drop bars would be more at home on this bike. As others have
said, the Alba backsweep makes the cockpit look a bit tight. The bike would
probably handle as intended with a drop bar-type riding position too. Of
course, it really just depends on what you find comfy.

My experience with Albatross bars is similar to what others have
expressed; especially Drew's observation about the role geometry plays in
handlebar selection. Albatross bars felt good on my Atlantis, so with this
in mind I tried Albas on my Sam (which always had Nitto Noodles). With
Sam's more slack geometry and lighter feeling steering the Albas just
weren't working for me (even though pictures prove there are a plenty of
Sams being ridden with Albas). Now, Noodles are back on the Sam and we're
 both happier.

Side notes: 1. the versatile Atlantis feels perfect with Noodles too.
 2. a new MIT Homer is enroute to me now and the bars will definitely be
 Noodles.

I say go for the new Homer!

 Best,
 Rich in ATL

[RBW] Re: Repair and Wet Paint Services on West Coast?

2019-03-15 Thread Kieran J
FYI - I spoke with Rick at D (over email; he is actually quite
responsive). He reported the following regarding a Rambouillet restoration:

*"A single color with cream head tube and cream accents runs $545 plus
shipping. As far as the frame repair we do that as well, probably around
45$ to fix the damage and $60 to move the cable stops further below the top
tube. We do have a limited supply of Rambo decals in stock. *

*As far as color choices, RAL will work and Pantone will work as well -
just keep in mind Pantone is an ink not a paint, so the shades are not as
close to the real thing. We also use the DuPont fleet color book. We are
also very familiar with all the colors Rivendell uses. *

*Turnaround is around 5-6 weeks."*

Given their Riv experience, I might actually go this route.

Re: [RBW] Repair and Wet Paint Services on West Coast?

2019-03-14 Thread Kieran J
Totally. Noah/Suzanne repainted my wife's city bike with one of their "one
colour special" deals, which doesn't include any deluxe finishing steps or
repairs, for CAD$325. THAT is a good deal but best suited to a new frame or
one that can just be stripped and sprayed. The paint was indeed lovely,
smooth as glass (it's a little worse for wear now though).

Thanks Eric! DeKerf sounds like a decent option. A local-ish option in CAD$
is obviously a big plus.

D also sounds good and very reasonable, especially considering his
extensive Riv history. Does Rick also do any repair work (?). Seem like
maybe not. It would be ideal to send it to one place for the whole shootin'
match.

[RBW] Repair and Wet Paint Services on West Coast?

2019-03-14 Thread Kieran J
I've stripped down my very grimy orange Rambouillet for a post-winter
makeover. Another frame I bought recently that arrived in near pristine
condition really highlighted how tired looking the Ram is. It has collected
many chips and scratches. It also has some light damage in the form of
chain ring marring, and some minor mangling of the seat cluster and a tiny
dent/ripple on the TT where something fell on it prior to my ownership.

Over the years I have meant to have it fixed and repainted. Particularly
when I lived in Toronto and VeloColour was located a 5-min drive from home.
A 2-tone paint with repairs and decal recreation would have run probably
upwards of $1k so I always put it off. Can anyone recommend/suggest an
affordable painter in the PNW/West Coast Canada/USA that could also
roll/Bondo the dent and massage the rest?

The work will no doubt eclipse the value of the frameset but I love this
bike and am loathe to part with it. It honestly doesn't give up much to the
Della Santa racer I just put on the road. It deserves some TLC.

Another effort to clean out some unused items from parts bin. Prices
include shipping in Canada/USA unless indicated otherwise. Sorry if prices
seem high but they include $$ Canadian shipping :-/. Also, customary sorry
for the cross-post to iBOB list.

   - MKS Sylan touring pedals. Good shape, bearings need some grease. $15
   - Thomson Elite 1-1/8th threadless stem. 25.4mm clamp, 120mm extension,
   +/-15 degrees. Excellent shape. $40
   - Avid Shorty 6 canti brakes. Used shape but complete and working great.

13-30, great shape. Chain comes with quick link. $25 for both or $55 with
   thumbies.
   - Nitto Tallux quill stem. 130mm length, 25.4mm clamp. Great shape, some
rust staining below the insertion line. $50
   - Dia Compe/Gran Compe 202 non-aero brake levers. Nice levers. Good

[RBW] Re: Help me build my Roadeo, Part 2, CRANKSET

2018-10-25 Thread Kieran J
Some info about your desired gearing would probably help with suggestions.
Are you thinking traditional road, like 53/39t? "Compact", as in 50/34t?
Sub-compact?
Personally, I like a 44/28t ring combo and farily low-Q on my road bike,
which really narrows down the options.

[RBW] Re: Help me build my new Roadeo. Part I, Wheels.

2018-10-22 Thread Kieran J
I have two wheelsets with the polished TB14s. All 32h. Great rims,
definitely recommend those.

Go with some Ultegra or DA hubs if you can find a suitable pair in
silver/polished that supports 11spd. They are tough to beat. Some polished
White Industries hubs would be my pick if there was extra $$$ to spend.

I used to have a set of the A23s and had nothing but trouble trying to get
the lumps out of mounted tires (using tubes).

[RBW] Re: Roadeo Future?

2018-10-04 Thread Kieran J
That would be a real shame if the Roadeo was stretched and stoutened.
There's a strange and increasing homogeneity happening with Rivbikes that
has gobbled up nearly all of their models. I don't really understand the
point of having half a dozen products that are more or less identical.

For me it started with the double-TTs on already plenty stout bikes. As a
tall and lightweight rider, I've essentially lost interest in their
products :-(

[RBW] Re: Disc Rambouillet?

2018-09-27 Thread Kieran J
I hear that. I won't consider selling the frame, and the bike you describe
in a ~67cm size with similar ride characteristics and any kind of
personality would mean custom, thus around $2k pricetag. Granted, I don't
know what builders charge for adding disc mounts. The frame needs some
other cosmetic work and I'd like a different colour, which is additional
motive for me to put it under the scalpel.

Didn't someone else around here or on the interwebs add discs to an
Atlantis? Would the frame or more importantly, the fork differ enough
between the A and the R to cause concern?

[RBW] Disc Rambouillet?

All this talk about Rams and 650b conversions has me thinking: is it a
crazy idea to add disc mounts to my Ram?
It would open up the possibility of 584x48 and fenders, while also
preserving the option of reverting back to 700x35 sans fenders.
Any words of caution on this?

[RBW] Re: Recommend 700 x 28c tire, please.

2018-09-27 Thread Kieran J
I just grabbed a pair of 28mm Gravel King Slicks during the eBay discount
day. Need to downsize my Ram's tires to accommodate the winter fender
situation.
They have some flat protection. Check out the Vittoria Corsa G offerings
for something more dainty.
