2023-05-28 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Realizing I'll likely never build this up into a finished bike, I'm finally
parting with my 59cm size Clementine frame (in orange).

This is the first generation Rivendell Clementine, ordered directly from
Rivendell back when they were first offered. It has been opened and
carefully taken out a few times, but has never been used or built up into a
bike. Includes fork, headset*, bottom bracket and seat post w/clamp bolt.
Has the Clementine frame decal and the Clem Smith badge. I only need to
cover my cost. Price is $800 plus shipping (although I can potentially
deliver to NJ, Philadelphia, NY or CT for a minimal charge). Or you can
save shipping by picking up in Lambertville NJ / New Hope PA area.

[RBW] FS: Rivendell SimpleOne

2021-06-18 Thread Montclair BobbyB

FOR SALE:

Selling my lightly used Rivendell SimpleOne. I purchased this frameset
from Rivendell (with BB and headset) and built it up as a
“multi-geared-single-speed”. It has a 20/22-tooth White Industries Dos Eno
dual freewheel in the rear, and Shimano 600 crankset with dual chainrings
(38/42-tooth). The SimpleOne has angled rear slide dropouts designed to
allow for multiple wheel positions without the need to adjust the brake
pads. The result: You have 4 separate gear ratio configurations to choose
from, one at a time (of course).

Overall condition is very good; only slightly worn-in. There are a few
minor nicks & wear marks where the green paint has worn down to underlying
primer; NO bare metal or rust; Honestly I’d call these “beausage” marks.
It’s a beautiful green and cream color combo. I’ve loved riding this bike,
but am seriously downsizing the stable, and I really haven’t ridden this
very much. The gearing combo gives you several options for different
terrain/riding style.

Bike Setup:

Frame: SimpleOne frameset (60cm)

Stem: Specialized stem 120mm reach

Handlebar: VO Grand Cru Ranndonneur bars 44cm wide

Brakes: Tektro canti brakes w/SunTour Superbe levers.

Front Dynamo Hub: Shimano DH-3N72 6v 3w 36h

Rear hub: Origin8 36h flip flop fixie/freewheel w/White Industries Dos Uno
20/22t freewheel and 17t fixed cog

Rims: Alex DM18 700c eyeletted rims w/straight gauge stainless spokes

Tires: Schwalbe Century 700c x 35c green whitewalls (great for on/off road)

Crank: Shimano 600 175mm with 42/38t chainrings

Saddle: Brooks B17 Narrow (like new, still needs breaking in)

B Eyc LED front light (included, not installed)

B 4D-lite plus w/standlight (included, not installed)

Price is $1200. If you know this bike, you know it rides like a dream.
This is ready to go, for day or night riding.

Pick up in Lambertville NJ / New Hope PA area; will drive up to 2 hours to
meet; potential option to deliver in New England area. Strongly prefer to
NOT ship.

Please contact me (Bobby) offline at montclairbob...@gmail.com
Thanks,
BB

After a couple of days hemming and hawing, decided to go back to the

change up saddles again. Only differences from earlier are a Cygolite
headlight on a Gino Mount, , Cygolite tail light, Brooks Cambium C17, mini
reflective triangle, and Sackville hub shiner. Only bummer is the
reflective triangle covers up the Rivendell flying man patch on the
 external pouch.

Still might add a bell. And down the line may swap out the trigger
shifter to something else. Oh, and different tires. But that's for next
year. No rush now. Want to just ride the bike. And enjoy.

[RBW] Jeff Archer, Owner of First Flight Bicycles

2016-07-25 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Not sure if you caught this news, but Jeff Archer was killed last Wednesday
while crossing a street in Mooresville, NC. He was hit by a drunk driver.

Some of you may know Jeff as the founder/curator of MOMBAT (Mountain Bike
Museum) and owner of First Flight Bicycles in Statesville, NC. He also
owned Mountain Goat cycles.
This is a big loss for the cycling community. I OFTEN refer to the MOMBAT
site for information.

He was a great guy, and the world will miss him.

[RBW] Re: Show me your Garage/Workshop/Cave/Storage Spaces

2016-01-08 Thread Montclair BobbyB
For years all I wanted was a garage with an automatic door opener, that I
can to pull into, press a button and be inside my house...Well... after I
had that for a few years and the novelty had worn off, all I wanted was a
heated space where I could work on bikes, cars, or anything else, and with
enough room!.. I finally have that, and it's only 2 small steps away from
my kitchen. Hey, cars are tough... they can survive outside or under a
carport... My cars are not show-worthy... they look just fine with a little
beausage. And mowers? rakes? wheelbarrows?... they belong in sheds... NO,
people... the attached garage is the ultimate man-cave... You can roll big
equipment in and out, track dirt in, hose it off, and yes, even have heat
in it (mine has an old wood-stove)... Mine also has 2 huge picture windows,
a built-in bowling-alley-turned counter running the width of the garage,
great lighting (a chandelier hung by a hook big enough to hold an engine...
the guy who built this place was a skilled craftsman).

ManCave One is now operational... Needs some additional tweaking, but I now
have piped in stereo music and I'm just about ready to start living out
here.

Peace,
BB

[RBW] Re: Let's See Some Clem/Clementine Pics

2015-11-05 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Just received my 59 Clementine last evening... I'm buried in other stuff,
but managed to quickly open the box and pull it out for a quick glimpse.
It's the orange (although not what I'd envisioned as "Clementine Orange",
based on the prototype photos. From that perspective I have to say I'm
disappointed I had the whole clementine theme in my head, and even
painted parts to come close to matching the original color. This color
will be difficult to match.

BUT, the Clem orange IS a beautiful shade of "orange" even if it's more a
kind of salmon orange, IMO. Once my brain processes this
*altogether-different-than-what-I-expected* orange, I'm sure I'll figure
out another use for the "orange parts" and proceed with my build... It
looks like it will be a total gas to ride.

[RBW] Re: Clems have shipped!

2015-10-29 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Thanks Bob. From the photo, (to be honest) the orange is disappointing
(compared to the prototype orange, which was much brighter) I will have
to reserve judgment until I see it in person, but thinking my build parts
that I (pre-)painted orange (to hopefully match the proto orange) will
likely need to be repainted. I'll find out soon enough... my Clementine
has shipped

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe big apples 29x2.35 on 58cm Atlantis? And other fatties

2015-10-08 Thread Montclair BobbyB
According to Peter White, "... if you have a bike like the Rivendell
Atlantis and you won't be using fenders, you can just fit the 60mm Big
Apples (with maybe 3mm clearance) and have the most comfortable ride
possible."

Once upon a time I rode 700c x 60mm on my Bombadil... I'm a fat-tire lover,
and typically go for the fattest tires I can fit. But even I thought the
60s began to feel a bit ponderous on longer road rides. For shorter
distance, especially on mixed terrain and local knocking around these were
the absolute BOMB!!. I eventually settled in on 50mm BAs and felt this was
the better all-round choice... but admittedly I did miss the mega-cush and
comfort of the Big-Daddy Big Apples...

I'm considering a pair of "Big-Mama" BAs for my Clementine 59cm... I don't
care about weight... Clementine will clearly make her presence known along
the Delaware River Trail from Frenchtown to Washington Crossing (and
beyond).

I say go BIG!!

Nothing like pairing the words 'scary' with 'exciting'... that's what
motivates us to make things happen... I say do whatever it takes...
whether it's selling other bikes, unessential possessions, picking up extra
work, etc...start socking away the Clem fund in your coffee can, little by
little.. you've got time before you need to pay for it... MAKE IT HAPPEN,
KEEP THAT CLEM!!!... it's something you will be especially proud of (having
made it happen despite the challenges).

Best of luck, move ahead and don't look back. Live life to its fullest,
craziest, and scariest/excitingest!! *(Patrick Moore must be cringing at
my butchering of the English language)* We're with you.

[RBW] Re: Confession! I bought a mountain bike

2015-09-30 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Admittedly I am a convert from hydraulic suspension and vow I'll never go
back...The instant response and subtle flex of rigid steel to me offers the
ultimate feel, yet the combo of cushy rubber, a well-broken-in B17 saddle
and the flex gives me plenty of passive suspension.

That said, it really does depend on the kind of riding you plan to do... I
ride like an old man, savoring every twist of the trail, so my setup is
perfect for ME. For fast riding, especially over chattery surfaces,
suspension (IMO) allows you to hold your line far better (critical at
speed) and keeps your teeth from rattling. Also if you're prone to catching
air, you will want suspension. But for my everyday riding, including slow,
technical single track I'll take rigid steel any day of the week.

If anyone ever visits the Central Jersey/New Hope PA area give me a
shout... I've got a 'guest bike' (and some sweet trails out my back door)
that may make you a believer, too.

Peace,
BB

[RBW] Re: Bicycles in federal wilderness lobbying

2015-08-18 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I have been an active member of a mountain biking group in NJ (JORBA) for
years (including building and maintaining trails for multi-use following
the IMBA method). I have been mostly opposed to wilderness area bans on
bicycles (having enjoyed several wild areas in CO and UT that presently
remain open to mountain bikers). On the other hand I have also see how
overuse can ruin a beautiful trail. Fruita CO is one area where I
personally think has gotten semi-trashed after being
over-hyped/over-ridden. There are so many places to ride; I personally am
opposed to wholesale banning, but support the idea of selectively closing
certain sensitive areas to mountain biking.

I have several hundred acres of nice trails behind my residence, and lately
they have been overused (and it shows), mostly due to ignorance (i.e.riding
when the trails are too wet/soft)... Education can go a long way (before
closure becomes necessary)

Saw this today and curious of the group's thoughts on this:
 http://www.sustainabletrailscoalition.org/

On the one hand, all they are aiming to do is lift a blanket ban on bikes
in federal wilderness areas and trails so that land manager can make a
decision on whether bikes would be allowed on a per park/wilderness area
basis. It would not, for instance, automatically allow bikes on the AT, and
that seems like a reasonably far fetched thing anyway. But would allow to
keep things like the Continental Divide open, and also open up other
wilderness areas that are much less traveled by foot than the AT.

But on the other hand, things like the discouraging news of the Oregon
Outback this year make me wonder if opening the doors too wide is a bad
thing--not that that was a federal wilderness issue, but shows what can
happen when too many eager cyclists take to some unsupervised bike routes.

As for trail impact, there seems to be an argument either way as to
whether bikes have more (or as much as) an impact as hikers. With riding in
muddy trails being the biggest concern.

Especially interested here since the RBW crowd seems to generally be super
responsible and smart about hitting trails and stealth camping where bikes
 aren't typically allowed.

 For or against?

RE: [RBW] Double leg Kickstands... lets talk

2015-08-17 Thread Montclair BobbyB
Aside from the convenience of a kick stand, I am beginning to like kick
stands less and less. I no longer trust them (especially on a loaded bike) to
do their job without causing undue stress on a frame. For me, it's lean it or
lay it down.

I thought the Flickstand was a novel idea, and helped to keep a bike from
rolling AND made it easier to lean a bike. I still hold out hope that there's
a slightly sturdier version somewhere out there, but I always thought it was a
brilliant concept.

And the basic premise for another alternative, the Clickstand tent-pole
design makes sense for heavier loads less the convenience factor of a
kickstand.

I'm convinced there's a better mousetrap out there folks...

Finally got my 2-speed wheel laced up and installed on my S1 (BIG THANKS

I took it out on a semi-hilly ride, and WOW... this moves along the flats
at a good clip, but just a quick flip of the thumb shifter and I can
actually climb a long hill that would otherwise have me pushing the bike...
 VERY COOL!!!

The lower gear is great for hills or for tooling around at low speed.
 TOTAL BLAST TO RIDE!!!

I'll start with a little back ground on the Bendix modification. I found
this review about a year ago and it was what got me in the market for a
QB/S1 since the Bendix requires an OLD of 120mm. As you all know there
isn't another production bike quite like it with this spacing. I've been
riding the QB with the Bendix for about three months, so this is a short
term review, will provide a more comprehensive review a the end of the
 season.

 http://www.63xc.com/genng/bikesmith.htm

The upside to the modified Bendix hub are the following:
 1. Cruising gear is fixed, nearly 100% efficiency, same as any other fixed
gear bike. Rides just like one.
 2. Shift on the fly, no need to get off the bike, loosen wheel, move
 chain... so on.
 3. Down shift is 25% of the cruising gear. For me this means I'm using the
cruising gear like normal, up and down rolling hills, easily 90% of the
ride, if not more. The low gear is there for steep up hills or sustained
head winds. As an example I got in a 33 mile ride on Sunday afternoon, at
the most 1 to 2 miles were in the low gear. All the rest were about working
 the fixed gear.
 4. Simplicity, few moving parts within the hub and as Bobby B. noted, they
are stout. I've rebuilt a couple Sturmey Archer AW 3 speed hubs and the
modified Bendix has a fraction of the parts.

As with everything there are downsides:
 1. DO NOT DOWN SHIFT AT SPEED! This is a two speed fixed hub, meaning you
shift from one fixed gear to another fixed gear. Going from a cadence of 80
to 100 could throw you off the bike. I found this out the hard way, luckily
I rode it out and didn't crash, but it was pretty scary. Up shift isn't as
 critical, just ease up some.
 2. This is a bolt on hub, you need to carry wrenches to take the wheel off
should you need to fix a flat.
 3. It is heavy, at around 3 pounds. At least the weight is at the hub so
the rotational forces don't play into the energy to move it.
 4. The 18 tooth cog is integral to the hub and can not be changed. You
have to change your chain ring to make adjustments to the gear ratio.
 5. The cog requires an 1/8 inch chain.
 6. Requires some sort of friction mode shifter, but the choice is yours.
I'm using an old school Campy down tube shifter and cable guide, very
minimal set up, forward is for the low gear, back is the cruising gear.
 7. Because of the shift cable, I'm not likely to loosen and move the wheel
to take advantage of a crank with two chain rings.
 8. No conversion to a free wheel, but I suppose you could use the hub as
 is with the coaster brake.
 9. Bearing are not sealed. Will require regular maintenance. I'm using
Phil Wood tenacious oil on the gears and the two bearings near the gears. I
used Park grease on the left bearings.
 10. This is not an off the shelf part. The hub needs to be welded.
Fortunately I found a professional welder who does the MIG welding for $25.

Overall, having a two speed fixed gear bike is great! I live in a hilly
area and the low gear just makes fixed gear riding a really fun experience.
Without it, I would be limited to less hilly roads, having to walk up more
hills or would have to switch back to a geared bike. A geared bike would
not be the end of the world, but my preference for the past four years is
 to ride fixed.

[RBW] Re: Wool blanket recommendations?

2015-08-07 Thread Montclair BobbyB
I have bought Army surplus wool blankets on eBay...perhaps not Pendleton or
Hudson Bay quality, but hey, from sheep's wool, nevertheless.

In fact the Boreal Shirt made by Lester River Bushcraft / Empire Canvas is
made from (new) Army blankets, and I think the wool is of exceptional
quality.

tell my parents what you paid for these.

I haven't measured it, but it's big enough to cover a horse, about queen

There are lots of similarities between the car industry (and how they
appeal to individual tastes) and the bike industry... and it shouldn't
surprise us that the type of person who gravitates towards sleek, fast
sports cars may also gravitate towards sleek fast sporty bikes, that's
all...

I drive a Honda Element. I like utility-focused bikes that can do many
things in all kinds of weather on all kinds of terrain... gee, kinda like
my car... I'd love to drive someone's Corvette, but I'd never want to own
one... same as I'd love to take my friend's Pinarello Dogma around the
block and declare WOW that's so light and so fast... but I'd never want
to own one.

To each his own, that's the beauty of having a robust and healthy industry

Could a dynamo, with it's constant generation of juice, power a blinky

technical limitation, or is constant on just the way it's always been
done? I would vote for a dynamo powered taillight that could be switched

Interesting bike... Rivish in several ways, skinny tubing, really cool fork
(reminds me of Wes Willits' Wow fork) and it accepts disc brakes

Stretching the possibilities...
