[RBW] Phil Hubs In Available for Builds

2023-05-09 Thread Rich Lesnik
At long last, we've received 3 sets of Phil Wood hubs. We have 2ea sets of
36h touring cassette hubs, and 1ea set of 32h touring front/classic road
rear hubs. These will be for wheelset orders only. If you want just a Phil
hub, I suggest ordering direct from Phil. You can email me (rich at rivbike
dot com) or better yet, call the shop if you want to place an order.
They're expensive ($700 for the hubs, plus $300 for spokes and labor, plus
rims-- Velocity Cliffhanger and Atlas are $100ea). Total will be $1200+60
shipping+CA sales tax if you're in CA.

[RBW] FS 51 mustard-gold Apploosa

2020-06-25 Thread Rich Lesnik
I love this bike. "But," I love my custom more, and there's just too much
overlap to justify keeping them both. I will sell the complete bike, "as
is," for $1800. All parts listed below will be included. If you're planning
to change anything out, and sell the parts you don't want, then I will sell
the frame and fork for $1200, and we can work out prices on anything else
you want from the current setup. Here's the list:

Frame: 51cm mustard-bold Appaloose frame/fork
Albatross HT Alu. bar, cork grips, Suntour "Command" shifters,
index-friction7sp rear, friction front
Suntour XC"something" front derailer
Shimano Tiagra or Altus med-cage rear derailer (either one, as neither is
installed right now)
Suntour XCpro/SE black cantilever brakes
MTB brake levers (Dia Compe, I think)
Nitto S83 seatpost
Brooks B67 saddle
Nitto R14 rear rack
"Big Loafer" tan bag (2-way zipper works in 1 direction only)
Phil Wood/Synergy Wheelset. 650B/Black hubs/rims, FW (not cassette) (built
by me, of course!)
Maaxis "Detonator" tires, 650B/42mm (I think); very cushy
Suntour 7-speed freewheel (gearing can be adjusted -- I have a bunch of
freewheels)
Sugino Hi-lo double crank
Big brass hammer bell

Would prefer local Bay Area pickup.( Packing shipping will cost an
additional $100)

Please contact me off-line, at Rivendell (r...@rivbike.com) I'll get photos
together and send them if you want.

[RBW] Re: Re-spacing a Phil Wood hub, 126-135

2020-05-15 Thread Rich Lesnik
There are several factors at play. First, of course, is whether or not the
current end caps are those which receive a 5mm hex wrench. If so, then you
can move on to the next step. If not, then either a special press,or Phil
Wood, will be needed.
Next step, make sure the drive-side end cap (if you're going to replace it)
will provide enough depth for your freewheel. Different freewheels
(5,6,7-cog, compact or "regular") require different depths of drive-side
end caps. Once you've measured the depth of the drive-side end cap, you can
determine the necessary non-drive-side end cap by adding the drive-side
end-cap's depth to the width of the hub shell (I think it's 72.5, but you
can measure it). An example:
IRD 7-sp. FW uses 28.5 drive side, and 35mm non-drive side.

I have lots of end caps, and would be happy to supply them.

Rich

[RBW] A Corona-Virus Aid Project

2020-04-28 Thread Rich Lesnik
This is Rich (Riv wheel builder). I have 1 slightly-used rim (tubular, 700/32
Mavic GP4, with a Vittoria Cronometro CS tire), and one new Mavic CXP 33 which
has been previously laced.

I propose the following: You choose a hub, I build the wheel (cost will be
$175+cost of the hub), and I will donate all proceeds to a homeless shelter
(Trinity House) here in Walnut Creek.

You can send me an email at Rivendell (you probably know the email address) if
you’re interested.

[RBW] Re: short note of gratitude

2019-07-25 Thread Rich Lesnik
I've noticed a fair number of posts regarding rear-rim Synergy failures.
My/our approach is this: if the wheel's been ridden for a "reasonable" time
-- say, 6 years or more -- then I/we offer to replace it at half-price,
with no labor charge. You cover the shipping to us (you could send just the
hub if you want). If it's sooner than that, then no charge, but you still
pay the shipping to us. The usual replacement is the Atlas, Dyad or A23.
The off-center Synergy rim had a tendency to crack around the spoke-holes,
so was discontinued and replaced with the Velocity/Rivendell-designed Atlas.

Seems to be lots of interested in the QB, a little in the Homer. Thanks for

[RBW] Re: Rear hub for Atlantis build: WI or PW?

2017-06-15 Thread Rich Lesnik
Rich at Rivendell here. I'm a little concerned about over-generalizing on
this thread, from anecdotal information or personal experience. I don't
know of any general weaknesses in current Phil, WI, or Shimano hubs. It's
important, I think, to be careful, especially about negative feedback
regarding the quality of an item.

Current Phil hubs use a 5-double pawl system, are all 11-speed compatible,
have more bearings (5) than you'll ever need, a stainless steel freehub
body, and the (still) legendary Phil axle. Simply put, it's the toughest
(and heaviest) hub out there. Yes, freewheeling is a bit stiff. So?

White Industries MI5 hubs are much lighter, cost $100 less, have a
tubular-steel axle, and the (also) legendary White Industries adjustment
system. Titanium freehub body, 4-pawl system, 11-speed compatible. Also a
bunch of bearings. Maybe not as tough as Phil, but easily plenty tough for
touring.

Chris King classic hubs are cool. I especially like that the drive
mechanism is in the middle of the hub body. Yes, they're slightly
"over-engineered," and they sound like a swarm of bees following you when
you ride. But when they're well-maintained, they work great, and go on and
on. I'd recommend the steel freehub driver, though, as the aluminum notches
easily. Oh, and they're the most expensive of the lot.

Ah, Shimano. Lots of people love to hate Shimano. But, let's be honest.
They make great stuff for bikes. The steel-axle (10mm) models (older XT,
LX) are all gone except for Deore. A good solid hub. But I have to admit
after working on, and examining, the current XT model (780), I find little,
if anything, to criticize. I like loose-ball bearing hubs anyway, and these
are those. I'd thought the alloy axle and steel end-caps would be a no-go,
but not so. They work quite well. I believe Shimano has researched and
re-worked the XT freehub body, it's toughened up, and hardened steel. I've
put lots of those hubs out on the road, and only a few have come back for
any repairs.

So let's cool down, OK?

[RBW] FS: '05 58cm Red Glorius F/F/H -- Joe Bell Paint

2017-02-10 Thread Rich Lesnik
If you received the latest RBW email, you can see a photo of this frame (as
a complete bike) there. A 2005 Glorius with a Joe Bell paint job. Bike was
ridden 100 miles, max. A few chips and scrapes, otherwise pristine, and in
great condition. Joe Bell touchup paint included. This was a special
Glorius returned by a customer (too big), and "snapped up" by me. Because
it's not being ridden, I've swapped out the parts onto a Cheviut, and will
sell the frame, fork and Ultegra headset for $1900. Prefer local Bay Area
pickup (at Rivendell). If you need/want more details, call me at Rivendell
Monday, Tuesday or Thursday, 10-2 west coast time.

[RBW] Re: good blug post on rim and disk brakes

2016-05-15 Thread Rich Lesnik
I've so far hesitated joining this thread. First, let me be perfectly
clear: I speak only for myself. Nothing I say should be construed as
representing "Rivendell Policy" or "Rivendell Opinion". I prefer rim brakes
99 to 1 over "disc" brakes. I put "disc" in quotation marks because, of
course, rim brakes are disc brakes, with a much larger radius. And that
makes all the difference. A front disc-brake wheel is heavily dished
(uneven spoke tension, left to right). The proximity of the braking surface
to the hub increases the stress on the pulling spokes, relieving the
"pushing" spokes -- the flex on the looser-side spokes can work-harden the
bend in the spoke elbow at the hub, and it will eventually break. Same
thing with the rear wheel (only here the lower-tension spokes are on the
non-drive, left side). These spokes are already prone to breaking over the
long haul, as they flex more, and will work-harden more quickly. This
increased stress would still be problemmatic on a non-dished disc-brake
front wheel, as well, because of the increased stress all around, at the
hub. Admittedly, replacing a broken spoke is easier, and less costly, than
replacing a worn rim. Nonetheless, a dished front wheel presents additional
problems -- as the primary braking instrument, the front wheel, when
unevenly tensioned (side to side), can, under severe stopping conditions,
become unstable, provoke an accident, or even "figure-8". Not good.

Additionally, disc brakes present a safety hazard to other riders. That
spinning, thin disc can easily become a buzz saw when presented with a
fallen rider's limb. Hence the ban on disc brakes by the UCI. This should
be an alarm bell, at least.

Full disclosure: I use a disc brake as a "drag brake" on my tandem, so far
with no problems. That's why is "99 to 1" as opposed to 100 to zero!

I rode my Riv. custom (basically a beefed-up Atlantis-type frame,

Whitefish MT. Full load, front/rear bags, saddle and handlebar bags.
Ritchey Crossbite (1.6") tires. No problems whatsoever. You can see some
photos on the "Gallery" page at www.handsonwheels.com. My advice: don't
over-plan -- "just ride."

[RBW] Re: WTB bar end pods

2013-03-27 Thread Rich Lesnik
The Shimano pods need to be altered slightly to work with other DT
shifters. The raised square section (which receives the square-hole spacer)
has a half-moon nub on one side that needs to be filed down before other
shifters will fit properly.

Re: [RBW] Digest for rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com - 2 Messages in 2 Topics

2012-03-05 Thread Rich Lesnik
NAHBS

Great seeing the few of you I recognized (!) at the NAHBS. I think the H
needs to be deleted -- come on, Shimano?!? Mavic?!? Also, the NA --
plenty of non-USA stuff there. I'm not complaining -- I thought most of
what I saw there was great. Special mention (by me) to Shamrock -- their
website is lugoftheIrish! Also a local SF framebuilder, Rafael --
interesting guy -- despite the carbon fork!

Anybody else notice how many wheels have disc brakes? And the Wheel Fanatyx
building/truing stand. Impressive -- and expensive at $2k! A bit
disappointed in the register of the fancy gauges, though. They measure down
to .1mm -- DTSwiss measure down to .01mm, and the stand costs less than
half.

My camera died before I could take any photos, so please keep posting them!

And one final note -- I saw Jon Grant (illustrator -- who, by the way,
designed the Hands on Wheels logo) -- recently lost his 5-year-old son
Auggie to Leukemia. He's marketing his drawings, prints and T-shirts to
raise money for pediatric cancer research. He told me Joe Bartoe has his
stuff on his site. PLEASE BUY HIS STUFF. He's an incredibly wonderful guy
-- and it's a good cause!

Rich
