[RBW] FS: Acorn Medium Large Saddle bag

2012-11-09 Thread RonLau
To all,

I am going to sell my little use (~20 miles) Acorn Medium Large Saddle bag.

PIcture on a bike (this is NOT my bike nor my bag) just to show you what it
looks like on a bike.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/redding_dave/3123290169/

The actual bag itself.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/19694929@N00/

$80 shipped to lower 48 states.

If you ride a small frame and saddle height around 67cm, this may be too
big for you without a fender to support it.
This is the reason why I am selling it, nice size but too big for my setup.

Thanks,
Ron

2012-06-15 Thread RonLau
To add to Jan's comment. Now I don't put fenders on bike if it is not
design for metal fenders (bridge placement, braze on...) I don't like the
voodoo I had to do when I change a flat and when I clean my bike.

For me, a bike design for metal fenders, you should be able to remove them
in 5 minutes and re-install in 10 minutes. Metal fenders is not rare
anymore and we should demand more from builders to do the job correctly the
first time. Unless they promise to do the fenders voodoo for you when you
have a flat, 1am, cold with a strong wind, and yes, you only have one
borrow tube left.

[RBW] Re: New Drivetrain for my Atlantis

2012-03-26 Thread RonLau
Jim,

This is the reason why Campy 10s Ergo with Shimano 8 issue.

10s Campy pulls are 2.5mm five times, 3mm twice and 3.5mm twice.

IMO, one is better off using Ergo 9s with Shiftmate for Shimano 9.

I am a Campy Ergo user, they are nice, easy to work with for me. Just
replace the g & e springs on a set of 10 years old shifter, good as new now
in terms of shifting. Their chain are pain but I use KMC and it works just
fine. If you use Veloce cassette, they are steel cog, they last a good
long time, and you can swap out one at the time, namely 16-17-18-29
usually. My cassette of choice still 13-26 and 13-29 for long climbs.

I have another friend Chorus group works well without issue after 10 years,
just replace the springs and keep an eye on the chain wear.

You do want to use all 10s parts, mix and match doesn't make happy marriage
with Campy.

Just my 2c.

Cost is $5 and you get food at the end.

Below is the link from last October. You will see the distance and
climbs.

Has been turning into a social event for some of us and hope you can

Most of SF local will go and it is a good time to learn about distance

[RBW] Re: Rando Advice

2012-03-06 Thread RonLau
Smitty,

You will be fine, go enjoy the ride. My suggestions...

1. Food: don't eat something you don't normally eat during a ride. I
like boiled eggs myself but I don't eat anything spicy during the
ride.
2. Speed: this is not a race, do at a pace you are comfortable with
for that distance. I know this is harder since you have not done this
distance before, but there is always the first time.
3. Time at control: if you want to be fast overall, it is good idea
not to hang around for too long. Besides hanging there for 30
minutes, you will get cold and takes a few miles to get warm up
again. It is more important for longer distance.
4. Bring the right tools: I always bring a patch kit with me, only use
it once but it saves that ride for me.
5. For me: when I get pass the "what the am I doing here?"
moment, it is much easier and end up being more fun and faster.

Just my 2 cents.

Ron

[RBW] Re: Don't read if you don't like heresy (a.k.a. my new road bike which isn't a Rivendell)

2012-03-06 Thread RonLau
For those who does not live in Bay Area. Mike's shop couch has been
THE hot topic within SF Randonneur group. One of our member has been
known to spend hours on that couch. I was told he rode 40 miles from
SF just to sit on it.

If you ever come here and want to ride, that will be good place to
go. You can do the Lighthouse loop (40 miles) from there or go out to
Petaluma to say hello to Bruce Gordon and White Industries (30 miles?)

Give us a call here and we can go with you, or you can get John Potis
to go with you, he knows that couch.

[RBW] Re: Rims and tire width

2011-12-13 Thread RonLau
Tom,

Rich sold me a set of wheels with DT TK540 rims on it. It is 24.5mm wide
and it is design for 29'er. It is 540g per rim, hence the name TK540, not
the lightest rim for road use but light enough.

The best part for this rim is a Conti 4 seasons 700x28 measures 28mm, that
is a shock for me.

2011-12-12 Thread RonLau
Hello, for sale is a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Supremem 26x2.00, folding
bead, 50 miles.

Mounted on my Mtn. bike and used it for 50 miles. This is not a tire if
you want to do your group ride with roadies but this is one of the toughest
tire and it will take a big big nail to give you a flat.

I have another pair on on my cargo bike, for the pass three years, not one
flat.

$90 shipped to lower 48 states.

Let me add this. Our leader here rode his FIXEDGEAR.

I rode most of the road on my road, camping, towing my son, carbon, rando,

yet.

SFR will host this again in Oct. but if anyone wants to ride all or most of
the route (ie start from Mill Valley), let me know. I will do it on fixed.

[RBW] Re: can one convert a 53 atlantis to a 650b?

2011-05-31 Thread RonLau
Joe,

I have done it and it came out nice. There was before all these 650b
frames you can purchase today.

http://cyclofiend.com/cc/2005/cc006-ronlau0505.html

I did it with Tektro Oryx brakes and I found it "rolls" better than
559 wheels for me.

My suggestion is to borrow a set of wheels to try first, buy your
friend lunch and beer/wine, buy a pair of Oryx and try them out first
before investing on a set of wheels.

That bike is long gone and I don't have any 650b bike myself.
However, if I were to get one, I will purchase a new frame design for
650b to start.

2011-02-01 Thread RonLau
I have done it before,

http://cyclofiend.com/cc/2005/cc006-ronlau0505.html

You have to use Tektro Oryx which has enough adjustment for it. If
you do like this better, you may want to invest on a set of
Paul MotoBMX.

Some may complain about the higher bottom bracket height, but I am use
to higher BB height in general, so I don't really care.

In case you are those who believe lower BB height, you may want to
read this.

[RBW] FS: Schmidt SON28 wheel

2011-01-31 Thread RonLau
To all,

For sale is one Schmidt SON28 front wheel, spec. see below.

Rim: Open Pro, Silver
Spokes: DT 14/15
Nipples: brass
Hub: SON28
Number of spokes: 32
Weight: 1250g, no skewer, with rim tape
Who build it? Rich at Rivendell.
How many miles: 400 max.
Price: 250 shipped to lower 48 states

Why am I selling this? Hardly use it.

If you want to get a well build wheel at a reasonable price, this is
it. Granted it is not as light as their newer 20R but for Halgoen
light and/or touring type application, this is it. I have one on my
touring bike, sure it is nice to have light when I need it. Original
skewer include.

Please reply off list if you are interested.

Thanks,
Ron

Bruce,

For the record, if this were to happen when I am around, I will stop
to help for sure. It is part of being in a group ride, I was taught.

Once we dropped someone, approx. a mile, then we got yell at by the
leader for not waiting for the slow rider. I broke a chain before,
without someone looking out for you, I would be stuck there in the
middle or nowhere for a while. The group took turn to push me all the
way to a bike shop to replace a chain, that is group ride in my book.

Jason,

IMHO, Bilenky has been doing them since day one. They can do that
almost in their sleep.

Others will do a fine job as well. If you want any changes to the
frame (fork, braze on...), now is the time. Also, they can crave the
couplers (more $) style after the lugs of your frame. Like my wife's
bike

Disclaimer: Bilenky is a friend of mine.

Patrick,

I think your lung will leave us in the dust, but the turns around here
will slow you down so I can catch you.

Most turns is not by design but developed via horse trail for trees,
so they can be very tricky. Mt. Hamilton is the best example that I
know.

It is a 54cm c-t ST with a 54 c-c tt. If you have not done SS/fixed

fixed/ss riders so you can learn all the joy and pain along with the

[RBW] Re: OT: Respect you wheel builder, Rich to be exact

2010-04-21 Thread RonLau
OK, this can get me in trouble. Keep in mind this is MY option. YMMV
of course.

Rich crossed US before (he is talking about doing it again btw), he
knows touring bike, and what kind of wheels you need. He also has a
tandem, xtracycle and other all rounders type of bike. So he knows
touring and what to make a wheel last.

Len used to race, tubulars world. Currently his Della Santa is Dura
Ace 10s with Downtube index shifter.

I can say all my Rich wheels NEVER has a problem before, has not true
them once, no broken spokes. Some of the road in SF can be a little
rough.

I also have wheels Len build, a set of Campy Centuar hub with FIR Tour
rim, he trued them once after 10 years. The nipples are turing green
but I plan on riding them until something break. He build a Chorus/OP
wheel for me, it

So, IMHO, either one can build you a set of wheels that last a long
time. They come from different background but their wheels last for
me. For ref. I weight 165 and most of my wheels are 32 spokes, a few
28 and a few 36.

[RBW] Re: What's the right saddle for a Roadeo?

2010-03-20 Thread RonLau
Aaron,

Thank you! After trying the Regal, someone gave me an old Concor (not
light list Lance uses) to try, works even better for me.

Saddles are like shoes, what works for me/you does not always
translate to others. The new Concor usually goes for $100 to $130,
not cheap but not too expensive you cannot try them.

[RBW] Re: TCO in general..

2010-02-02 Thread RonLau
Another Frame builder talked about TCO.

http://davesbikeblog.squarespace.com/blog/2006/11/5/toe-overlap-no-problem.html

"
There was a discussion recently on Classic Rendezvous Bike list; the
tread titled “Toe overlap even on good bikes,” implied that toe
overlap was a design flaw and one should not expect to see this on
quality bikes. Toe overlap is a result of other critical design
factors and cannot always be avoided especially on smaller frames.

When a framebuilder designs and builds a racing frame, his main
criteria are to: (1.) Place the rider in a position where he can pedal
with maximum efficiency, and (2.) Design the frame so the finished
bike will handle at speed in the best way possible. If the result of
the design is toe overlap then the builder can do little because to
achieve toe clearance other aspects of the frame’s design would have
to be altered.

For example the picture above shows my own bike. It has a small 52 cm.
(C to T) frame and has about an inch of toe overlap. If I were to make
the front end of the bike one inch longer to avoid toe overlap, I
would have to do one of the four following things or a combination of
all four.

(1.) I could make the seat angle steeper, or (2.) the top tube longer.
(3.) I could make the head angle shallower, or (4.) the fork rake
(offset) longer. The first two would effect my riding position; the
last two would affect the handling of the bike.

Toe overlap is not a problem because riding and cornering at normal
speed the front wheel never turns far enough for the toe to hit the
front wheel. The only time it becomes an issue is when turning sharply
at a very slow speed; doing a U-turn on a very narrow road for
example.

Caution and common sense are all that is required when executing a
tight U-turn. If you are turning left then your right pedal will be
down for maximum ground clearance as you coast into the turn. By the
time you need to start pedaling again you are already half way through
the turn, and the right crank has to complete ¾ of a turn before the
toe is opposite the front wheel.

By that time, you should be all the way around and the front wheel is
straight ahead again. If you are not the coast again, or ratchet the
crank back again on the freewheel.

Doing the same maneuver with a fixed gear is a little trickier; but it
is a matter of timing. Go very slow and start to turn as the toe
passes the front wheel; that way the crank has a whole revolution to
go before it makes contact again. If the front wheel is still turned
the next time round; straighten the front wheel so the toe clears,
then turn sharply after it has passed.

Fixed gear and fenders (Mudguards.) is going to make this move a
little difficult, but not impossible. With clipless pedals, you could
unclip the outside foot and move your toe back to give more clearance.
I sometimes get out of the saddle and simply point my toe downwards to
give more clearance.

What you need to avoid is a situation where you get your toe on the
wrong side of the wheel in a turn; if you do, try not to panic.
Ratchet the crank back if you have a freewheel, or if you are riding
fixed gear, keep going and let the toe pass the front wheel so you can
straighten up again.

Lastly, I would like to point out that a racing motorcycle with narrow
swept down handlebars; turning is restricted because the handlebars
touch the fuel tank. Here is a machine that will go 200 mph plus, and
restricted turning seems not to be a problem. Therefore, I maintain
the opinion that toe overlap on a bicycle is neither a design fault
nor a problem."
