[RBW] Re: Custom, not a custom

2020-02-13 Thread William R.
This gets me excited too! I like Mark Nobilette's work a lot and I like
that Riv is working with him more. Didn't like the way things seemed
between Riv and Waterford. I thought that the Nobilette Roadeo project
sounded cool, but now this bike - with brazed on Paul center pulls and more
tire clearance - sounds really interesting. Also note that what Grant is
indicating is a complete bike with Nobilette frame for around $4,000 - not
just a frameset.

2019-05-20 Thread William R.
Nice Hilsen David Hays. Waterford or Toyo? I would like to have one. MIT, Toyo
or Waterford wouldn’t matter too much too me. Though, if possible, I would go
new through RBWHQ to give them the business. I think it would slot in between
my Roadini and Appaloosa nicely. Enjoy that beautiful bike!

2019-05-20 Thread William R.
Thanks Tom, agreed, it’s a great bike that fits so well. I’m very comfortable
on it. Rivs just sail when you are out there on them. Fast when I want to be
and moving along nicely when I don’t care and I’m taking in the scenery. So
glad I didn’t sell it! Never again!

2019-05-19 Thread William R.
Patrick: 8-10 lbs sounds about right. I had two large and full water bottles in
it this morning with a couple of pieces of extra clothing, phone, keys and a
little food. I was afraid it would make the steering floppy, but I was
pleasantly surprised. Even riding no hands was not a problem. It felt good.

John: yes, it is a klickflix attachment. Nice and secure.

The bag is a little high and not level with the bar. Maybe an inch and a half
above it. The Klickflix puts the rear of the bag about two inches ahead of the
bar. It all works quite well for me. No problems. Plenty of room to move about
the cabin. I like it!

38s will fit on the Roadini with a Paul Racer on the front. Barlow Pass
shown in photo. I would like to see if the Diacompe 610s might offer a
little more clearance but have not had the chance to try them yet. If they
do I might feel bold enough to throw some Steilacooms on. In photos on the
Riv site, it looks the 610s might offer up a bit more clearance. As is,
I've been riding the bike like this with the Barlows and I've had zero
problems and it feels great.

[RBW] Re: Self-diagnosed Riv addicts (some) since 1994.

2019-01-15 Thread William R.
I was super aware of Bridgestone in the late 80's and early 90's. Didn't
know who Grant was, but I loved the ads and the bikes spoke to me. Never
owned a Bridgestone though. I think the first time I became aware that
Rivendell existed was not until late 1999 or early 2000 when I saw a
beautiful Rivendell custom cross bike on eBay. I remember being stuck on
that one and drooling over it, but not being remotely able to afford it. I
lived in San Francisco at the time and they had the US National Cyclocross
Championships in the Presidio in 1999. I attended and thought cross was
awesome and I thought the bikes were awesome because they afforded the
clearances that my road bikes at the time didn't have. I was stuck in a
racing frame of mind back then and bought a pretty cool cross bike to use
as a commuter. All was well for a few years. I didn't look deeper into
Rivendell and in 2000 I moved to Colorado. I kick myself now for not being
more aware and taking advantage of having Walnut Creek so close and the
possibility of visiting RBWHQ in the early years. Ouch! In CO I was still
clinging to the racer mentality but all the time wishing I could have
bigger tires on my nice road bike for all of the dirt farm roads out there.
I experimented a lot and was following Riv more and more. Moved east in '04
and was dreaming heavily of Atlanti and Hilsen's by then, but they still
seemed a little out of reach for me. Power clip ahead to 2009 and I finally
made my first plunge and bought a orange, canti Hillborne. Hooked: I've
always had a Riv since then. A bleu Hillborne next. Today we have 3 Rivs in
the house: 1 Roadini (mine), 1 Appaloosa (also mine!) and one Betty Foy (my
wife's). Our kids bikes are also heavily influenced by Riv. My son rides a
Cross Check and my daughter has a neat Diamondback step through/mixte that
we got at REI. I'm totally addicted to Rivendells bikes and their ways.
Current dream is to fill in the gap between the Roadini and Joe with a new
MIT Hilsen. That may not be in the cards and I will have to live with what
I've got! Good thing Rivs are so versatile. My two can handle just about
anything I could dream of doing on a bike at my age. It would just be neat
to have that Hilsen as my full time fendered bike, the Appaloosa as my full
time dirt bike and the Roadini as my full time road bike. My love for
Rivendell continues in tandem with my dreaming! Hmm... tandem... there's a
thought...

[RBW] Shoes for rambling.

2019-01-12 Thread William R.
I’ve always found the traditional Vans bottoms to be great in dry conditions,
but add a little water and they have been really bad in my experience. So I
don’t wear them anymore. Lately my faves have been Addidas Stan Smiths.
Previously, I liked the Sambas, but the Smiths are even better. I have a couple
pairs that I got at an Addidas outlet store. From time to time my wife drags me
to DSW. I always see if there are any crazy deals on similar Addidas with
uniform, flat bottom treads. I’ve bought a couple Pairs of Sperry’s that way
and they have been great too. I figure anything designed to be grippy on the
deck of a boat will work well and they do! For winter I recently bought a pair
of North Face boots that are water proof and insulated, but otherwise are
designed more like a sneaker. They have a slightly lugged sole that is overall
flat and uniform. Nice and warm and grippy on the pedals wet or dry. They are
called Back-to-Berkeley Redux. These were not cheap though.

[RBW] Cure for a bad mood, rain ride

2018-12-19 Thread William R.
Hi Daniel,

My first reaction to this post was “we can attach videos?”, I tried to watch,
but can’t seem to.

I love my Roadini and have been riding it a lot lately. I’ve been doing shorter
rides in the cold with lots of climbing to stay warm. The Roadini climbs so
well with its light and nimble-yet-stable nature. It’s a pleasure to ride.

Incredibly I came pretty close to selling mine a couple of months back. Ever
thankful to my wife for talking me down from that ledge! Never again, I swear
it!

Why is your seatpost slipping so much? Wrong size?

[RBW] Re: Did you have a 2018 cycling goal? Did you achieve it?

2018-12-11 Thread William R.
I agree this is a great thread. Very inspiring. I really like the idea of
throwing goals out there in front of where you are. This year has continued
a downward trajectory in overall mileage for me. I'm currently at 1,840+
miles on the year and I've given myself the goal of getting to 2k. I'm not
too upset about it because I had some very great experiences on the bike
this year. I'm 52 and I have two children, a 10 year old and a 14 yo. I
live in the burbs and commute into the city. It's hard to find the time but
I'm working on it. A general goal is to try to be active as much as
possible. Most days I walk to the train station and from the station to my
office on the other end of the ride (3.5 miles) and the same back home.
Back to the bike, when I was younger, I consistently did 5k+ mileage years
and logged three 7500+ years in my late 30's. As I get older, I envision my
schedule slowly cracking open again as my kids grow up. My goal is to
slowly grow the mileage back up. I would really like to ride more regularly
too. More days where I actually get on the bike. To that end I really like
Jon's 300 days a year goal. In 2019 I am going to try to tweak my schedule
and get out there more on a daily basis even if it's for just a half hour
or 45 minutes of hill climbing in the winter. Good luck to all with their
goals. There are a lot of good ones here!

Option "4.)"! Thanks Steve. I had no idea such a thing existed. And I will
check the spokes. Thanks.

To be clear, this device simply lowers the derailleurs attachment point to
the bike? Does the Shimano Shadow type derailleur do this as well or does
this Wolf Tooth component do it better by lowering the attachment point
even more?

Good advice Patrick! I did consider going down to a 36t chainring. And if this
new cassette is less than hoped I may yet. Or like you say, go back to the way
I had it in the first place and just LCG it when pedaling is no longer optimal!
Now that I consider it, I’m beginning to wonder what I was thinking. Oh well,
as long as it’s on and all set up, I might as well try it and see how it goes

Eric and Joey: thanks. My thinking was along these lines but I wasn’t sure. I

[RBW] Re: How young is too young for a boy to get a hatchet?

2018-12-05 Thread William R.
I've had a Gransfurs hatchet in the house since my son was 10 or so. He's
14 now and still has all his digits. I showed him early on what he could do
with it, how sharp it is. He especially likes how you can do pretty precise
wood shaving with it if you hold it at the head. We have a couple of the
knives that Riv sold/sells here too. He likes how you can do broader work
with the axe and fine tune with the knives. Now my daughter is 10. The axe
kind of scares her, she's not into it, but she likes carving and whittling
with the knives. I recently scored a 6 lb long handled splitting axe at a
flea market for $10. That is my favorite new tool. The kids stay away from
that and my son makes "Here's Johnny!" jokes when I handle it, but it
splits logs like nobody's business.

Regarding Jerry Garcia: I didn't know that he was missing a finger. Not a
head, but I like em. Wondering how you axe off a middle finger without
getting the others. I guess if things are arranged just so.

Excited about the GUS. Especially the filet brazed version. Not sure if I

Thumbies on my Appaloosa and bar ends on my Roadini. They look really nice

[RBW] Re: Roadkill intense increase in your area this week?

2018-10-09 Thread William R.
Hi Lum,

Yes, I have noticed an uptick for sure, up here in New York State just
north of the city and also closer to where you are. My parents live on the
Maryland shore and I was down there visiting and riding my Appaloosa this
past weekend. The squirrels are very active right now and I saw many dead
ones on the road, some of them spectacularly (and sadly) where I had to
swing wide to avoid them fenderless. I also saw one deer, a possum, a
turtle, and a few snakes (one quite large) all dead in the road. Surprised
to see the deer, don't see too many down there dead or alive. My parents
live in a quiet area away from the resorts and there is not usually that
much road kill. It's pretty sad.

Up here in Westchester, County, New York there is also an uptick. There is
a surprising amount of wildlife here. Lots of chipmunks, squirrels,
rabbits, skunks, raccoons, possum, deer, foxes and yes, the coyotes to got
with all of that food. I plan to chime in on Patrick Moore's coyote thread!
And yes, just a really sad amount of road kill up here at this time. Lots
of dead chipmonks on the MUP that I ride a lot, so they are getting hit by
bikes. They are crazy though, zipping back and forth, between my wheels, I
don't recall ever feeling that I made contact with one though...

Re: [RBW] Re: Rene Herse crank wobble/deflection issue(?)

2018-09-26 Thread William R.
I've been following this thread and I'm surprised that we haven't heard
from Jan himself. I can share my experience and what I learned going
through it. When I first got my Rene Herse crankset and SKF bottom bracket
three years ago, I had a similar experience where the crank was wobbling
and I couldn't get the derailleur to trim silently. I would be riding and
looking down, I could see that the crank wasn't running true. It was
certainly frustrating considering how much money I had just spent! I
contacted Compass directly and spoke (via email) with Jan himself. First
off he stated how high the tolerances on the SKF bottom bracket and Herse
crankset are and how super rare it would be for the spider to not be true.
More likely was for the chainrings to get bent slightly in shipping and
easily fixed on the bike with vise grips (with a towel to protect the
beautiful finish of the rings) and lightly bending them back to true. Most
likely (and what I was doing wrong) was that something was wrong with with
the high tolerance of the interface between the crank and the SKF bottom
bracket. It was coming loose slightly, just enough to put a little wobble
in the rotation of the crank. To remedy this Jan told me that the interface
between the crank and bottom bracket should be totally clean of any type of
grease or lube and tightened to the correct torque. He suggested that I get
one of the Herse "peanut butter knife" crank bolt wrenches (a knock off the
old campy wrench for good reason). The length of wrench are ensures that
you get the bolts in the proper area of torque with out over or under
tightening. I did both things and haven't had a problem since. The problem
can also develop when the high tolerance of a new Herse crankset is mated
to a used and/or less high tolerance bottom bracket. If the interface
issues between the crank and bb are not recognized and fixed early on,
irepairable damage can be done to the crank.

Hope this is helpful.

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Lights - Sinewave, IQX, Schmidt?

2018-08-19 Thread William R.
I use one of the B Icon Core rechargeable lights that I bought from Peter
2-3 years ago. It is a great light that is going strong despite heavy use
and abuse. It does have a narrow yet long shaped beam. When riding on area
paths and trails in total darkness I like to pair it with an older Nite
Rider MiNute 600 rechargeable. I am very sensitive to bothering others with
its symmetrical beam though. I keep it pointed down to just light up the
area directly out in front as I ride. These two lights used in tandem on
their lowest settings provide plenty of long lasting light and security
while riding in total darkness for me. But yeah, as soon as I'm back on the
roads and just need to be seen, I turn the Nite Rider off.

[RBW] Re: FS: Roadini 57cm Grilver (nearly) complete build $2200

2018-08-18 Thread William R.
Hi Raymond,

Sorry it took me so long to respond! Yes, I am asking $2200. And yes, it is
a beautiful bike.

I know that my original post said I was mostly looking to sell to someone
local and avoid shipping. But I will "bump" this sale now and say that
$2200 is the sale price shipped to the continental US. I will pack it
myself. I have done this many times and am good at it. But, if you wish to
have it professional packed, you would need to pay one of my local shops to
do that and then I will pay the actual shipping. For anyone interested
local to my area with no shipping, the price is now $2100.

I've been meaning to take more photos of the bike as the buyer would
receive it. In lieu of that please know that the price does not include the
saddle and does not include any bags, pedals, bottles & bottle cages, bells
or electronics that are on the bike in the photos in the original post.

All questions welcome and thanks for your interest.

[RBW] FS: Roadini 57cm Grilver (nearly) complete build $2200

2018-07-29 Thread William R.
With a little reluctance I've decided to sell my Leo Roadini. It is a
lovely bike, but it is proving to be a rough summer financially in my
household, so I've decided to let it go. I take solace in the fact that my
Appaloosa will handle just about all of my needs. I had a lot of fun
building this Roadini up last fall, but since then I have ridden it less
than 500 miles, and I've put much more on the Joe.

I built it up with a mix of new and used parts. The Velocity A23/105
wheelset is new with the build, as are the brake levers and calipers, Paul
Racer Medium in the front and Shimano Ultegra level in back. This was what
it took to clear the lovely Compass Barlow Pass tires (700x38). The bike
rides so nicely with these tires! The Compass/Rene Herse Crankset has been
around on a couple other builds, but it and the SKF bottom bracket are
beautiful. The XT rear mech is the oldest part on the bike, but you
wouldn't know it. The drive train performs flawlessly. The chain was new
with the build. The Simplex Retrofriction shifters are the bees knees. 48cm
wide Noodles. It is a great, light, go anywhere road bike. I am 6'1" with a
87pbh and it fits me perfectly.

Comes as shown in the attached photos except it does not include saddle,
pedals, bell, bag and click fix front adapter which is on the bike in the
last photo. I can send more photos on request.

I would love to find someone in the New York City metro area to hand this
off to. With that said, I will ship at the buyers expense in addition to
the sale price.

[RBW] Re: Cracking paint or (gulp) cracking frame?

2018-06-15 Thread William R.
I once suspected that I had a cracked frame at the base of the seat tube in
the area just above the lug in your first photo. I called the builder of
the frame and they sent me to a shop that was local to me for inspection.
The shop mechanic pulled the seat post out of the frame, grabbed a
flashlight and pointed it down the seat tube while cupping his hand around
the top of the seat post and the flashlight so no light would leak out
there. They turned out the lights in the room and we could all clearly see
the line of light leaking out at the area where I thought the crack was. It
was a tig welded Reynolds 853 frame and the builder admitted that they had
made some changes with the building process on the newer frames. Only frame
I've ever had crack on me and I've always been north of 180lbs, at times
well north! Anyway, maybe that method would work here too.

[RBW] Re: ROADINI

2018-04-15 Thread William R.
Tom: pressure front is 63psi and rear about 67 seems to be the sweet spot
considering my weight. They seem nice and soft, but still hold up over the
nasties, curbs and such.

Clearance front in the Paul Racer Medium at the top is the tightest at 4mm. The
arms are super wide. Wider than the fork blades. Clearance to the fork blades
is 4mm on both sides also. Maybe 3.5. Right in between those two marks.

[RBW] Re: ROADINI

2018-04-15 Thread William R.
Hi Tom. Thanks. The A23 rear is not offset. The wheels are 36h front and rear
and seem pretty solid. No problems. I like them a lot. I’m 225lbs and have
Atlas rims on my Appaloosa. These are good so far. I’m pretty handy with a
spoke wrench, but haven’t had to use it much on these so far. They are cheaper,
machine built wheels, so that is saying something.

As far as DT shifters go, I agree with everything Eamon said. I will add that I
really enjoy the movement that they encourage. I’m 52 and my back will be stiff
post ride if I don’t move around enough. And I really just like the finesse
required. I like making those little adjustments required with friction
shifting too. It all adds to the experience. I’ve got thumb shifters right at
the grips on the Joe. It’s really fun going back and forth between the two
builds.

I’ve had all of the different shifters besides electronic and I’ve settled on
these two types (dt and thumbies) for now. Good luck and have fun with the
choices that you make.

[RBW] Re: Bill's 57cm Legolas build thread

2018-04-12 Thread William R.
Really nice Bill. I dig the color choice too. Will look forward to the full
build and the reports from the kinds of rides you get up to on this Legolas.

I like Romans color too. And the mixed Neo Retros on his. I never thought
of doing that, but I will now! Another thing I am noticing on Romans is
that he has attached something that looks like a cable adjuster to the
release connector on his front Neo Retro. That is a great idea: to attach
some kind of handle there that facilitates pulling that release out. I
carry pliers with me for that purpose. I love my Neo Retros on my
Appaloosa, but releasing them can be a pain. I'm going to try something
like that. I wonder if he spot welded that on there or just glued it with
Gorilla glue or something. I may contact him, but thought you might know.

Enjoy the build!

The Paul Racer Medium front was necessary to make the 38s work. Plenty of

I believe the new Dia Comp center pull brake Riv is testing may provide the
same clearance at a lower price point.

Hi Kellie. I'm loving my 57cm Roadini. I agree with Austin's wife: it is
super smooth typical Riv geometry characteristics and certainly not twitchy
at all. Nice and light. As shown, it is about 27lbs, which is about 8lbs
lighter than my Appaloosa. These two bikes are not redundant at all and
have very separate purposes, I'm really enjoying both!

Build list:
48cm Noodles
Shimano Tiagra level levers
90mm Tallux stem
Simplex dt shift levers
Rene Herse crankset 46t/38t
XT RD
Can't remember which front derailleur off the top of my head
SKF 110mm BB
11-34 9-speed cassette
Brooks B-17 saddle
Paul Racer Medium front brake
Shimano Ultegra level rear side pull
Shimano 105 hubs laced to Velocity A23 rims 36h
Not sure which spokes
Compass Barlow Pass 700x38 tires
Neubaums green with clear shellac
Crank Bros. Candy 2 pedals

2018-04-09 Thread William R.
Very interesting indeed Bill! That Instagram post wasn’t dated April 1? I
wonder if these will fit on my Appaloosa. If my nominal 44mm Snoqualmie Pass
tires measure actual width of 41mm, will the new 55s measure 50-51mm on the
same rims (Atlas). I will be eager to find out. As it is, 53s (Maxxis Torch)
and 54s (Thunderburts) easily fit on the Joe, but Big One’s at 60mm certainly
did not. 55mm Compass may be the bees knees.

[RBW] Re: Choco-Moose Setups.

2018-03-08 Thread William R.
Here's a shot of mine David. I've got them on the bike they were originally
made for: my Joe Appaloosa. Ok, ok, maybe they were not specifically made
for Joe, but they came stock on it, and I couldn't be happier with them
there and have no desire or plans to switch them out for anything else. The
whole bike fits me like none other has before. It's glove-like, the fit is.
If you have a frame that is a little long for you, that is where the
Choco-M's shine. Because they come back quite a bit. And they have a
multitude of positions once you get the right reach, which is somewhat
static since it's a moose bar, so... you'll want a longer top tube than say
on your drop bar set up (if you have one). 2-3cm longer I would think. With
the right reach, you will be comfortable up-right on the ends as well as
forward on flats in front, and everywhere in between. Even in the "Peter
Sagan, time trailing off the front to the finish" position! Seriously. I
hope you enjoy them.

Good to hear Bill, and very inspirational. I often wonder why EBDJ doesn't

its definitely personal for many. With that said... Personally I've
struggled with it. It is something that is almost constantly on my mind and
something that I would very much like to be successful with. I'm heavier
than I should be for sure and I yearn to live the healthier lifestyle that
EBDJ promotes. Yet, I keep failing and falling off and gaining what I've
lost back. And I bought and read the book right when it came out! How many
years has it been? I was also reading a lot of the stuff that Grant was
talking about before EBDJ came out like Gary Taubes' books. So I've been
trying and failing for some time now. I don't know... there's a switch in
my head that needs to be duct taped off or permanently removed! I keep
trying though and what you have written here helps. Good on ya.

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose vs. Choco-moose

2018-02-09 Thread William R.
The Chocomooses that came stock on my Appaloosa are bees knees perfect as
far as I'm concerned. But I definitely don't ride much single track on
mine. Dirt and that other stuff roads plenty. Rough, badly maintained MUPs,
yes. The thing that is so great about this set up is how stable it all is.
But for single track you will want more fast response maneuverability. I
would say maybe standard Bullmooses may be the way for you to go. But then
you need to consider that the Appa is designed for bars that sweep back
with a longer top tube. Maybe a non-moose bar with the right length stem
will enable you to dial in the reach better. I agree with Jeremy and others
that are using Jones bars on their Appaloosa's. That might be an avenue for
you to explore.

I use my formal first name and first initial of my last. These are real.
Then I sign with my more informal, what I go by of "Bill" and always say

figure out my last name and town/address. And then what a bust it would be,
they would be so disappointed...

[RBW] Re: Rivendell prices going up.

2018-01-31 Thread William R.
Oh man... I just want to add that Grant and Riv struggle to survive from
year to year in this country that does not support small, successful,
vibrant, loved, etc. companies like this. Riv employs a bunch of great,
real people that answer the phone when you call. People who love the
product just as much as we do. They ride it. They know it. There are a few
companies that I know of that sell similar product. Some of them are one
man businesses and/or businesses with fewer employees. I don't know how
they do it. I respect them too. But Riv, because Grant has stuck to his
guns always, and respects his employees, struggles at times to take care of
them. I can and have and will continue to support this. The pricing
increases seem reasonable to me. I have only ever had Taiwanese built Rivs.
They have all been great. My Appaloosa is just... wow, the details on that
frame, the ride quality, the incredible fork, long, sweet wheelbase, the
lugs, the paint. I got the complete new from Riv for $2,100! Today... I
don't know, I think it would still be an incredible deal at say $2,750...
And now I have my Roadini, which again is just beautiful and a joy to ride.
Grants design is just so spot on for my type of riding. So glad I found Riv
(or they found me). For all of this and more I say great, really well
thought out products at great prices. I'm not in a position to buy one of
the Waterford frames or a custom. But yes, the gap in pricing is reduced,
and Waterford mystifies me a little. If I were in that market, I would lean
to the custom Nobilette side, but I feel that both are still really good
values. The customs just got a little better. But enough blah drivel of
this Riv fan boy.

[RBW] Re: BMC Road vs Roadini

2018-01-16 Thread William R.
Daniel: my Roadini came with a seat post, as it seems others did. I was
surprised to see the seatpost in there when I opened up the box. I thought I
read in one of Grant’s posts that seatposts would not be included. Maybe they
only had a certain amount.

Regarding tire clearance on the Roadini: I have found that 38 Compass Barlow
Passes fit with a big BUT: you have to use a Paul Racer Medium brake on the
front. And no fenders. Clearances are very good though.

I did have a BMC Road in the past and it was very nice indeed, but I agree with
others that have suggested that it’s geo is more race geo oriented with shorter
chainstays made it not quite as long haul comfortable and not as easy to get my
position as upright as my 50’s body requires.

[RBW] Torque spec for quil stem questions

2018-01-14 Thread William R.
I am very much a “by feel” kind of tech guy. It’s why I like steel so much. It
allows you to operate in that manner as long as you are sensible and not a
brute and know your tools. I have torque wrenches, the old fashioned kind where
the arm bends and the arrow at the end points to the weight you are applying. I
rarely use them these days except when I need to loosen some old, too tight
part with a long arm for leverage. Mostly I have a Allen set that I got a long
time ago that has longer than normal arms, but not too long. Tightening a nitto
quill with one of these is perfect because it is impossible to over tighten
without attaching some long arm to the Allen. Basically I just tighten until
the wrench starts to hurt my hand alittle. Very unscientific! But I have never
had a too loose or two tight issue using this method with metal parts.

I loved it when Jan at Compass came out with his “peanut butter knife” crank
bolt wrench for his René Herse cranks. It is basically a copy of the classic
Campagnolo tool. This tool fits perfectly around the crank bolt and is shaped
specifically for optimal hand tightening of the crank bolt. Just tighten until
your hand hurts and it is tight enough!

I would not use this method with m5 rack, bottle and fender bolts though! One
could easily strip or snap those! I’m ginger with those.

My probably not too useful two cents on a cold Sunday morning nursing a cold.

2017-11-10 Thread William R.
I received Rivs November email promo yesterday and down at the bottom they have
this new bag: Randi Jo XL Pocket tender bag. Looks interesting. Follow the link
and it’s out of stock. That just makes it look more interesting to me! But what
is it? All photos show it detached from the bike or person. And they mention an
existing smaller version. Is this meant to be an under the saddle burrito roll
type of bag? It kind of looks like one of those bags that free climbers use to
keep their powder in... makes me wonder if it could also attach to a persons
hip or like a “fanny pack” or something. Thus the pocket tender name? Anyway,
never heard of these and they look pretty neat.

[RBW] Roadini build and first ride report!

2017-10-31 Thread William R.

I took my first "serious" ride on my new Roadini this morning. 28 chilly,
brisk, Halloween miles! Short version is it is beautiful, awesome and
everything you expect from Rivendell. You may skip to the photos now if you
wish...

I was notified that Leo Roadini had arrived at my local FedEx location on
Friday. Work was crazy and I didn't want to be hasty so I waited until
Saturday morning to pick it up. Out of the box everything was packed very
well. My daughter assisted me with unpacking. She complained that it was
heavy, but I didn't think so... Once unpacked I took a good look at the
frame. What a beauty! Rivendell's attention to detail is so high. The new
seat lug is a thing of beauty, right down err up to the little curly cue
point where the seat post goes in. Nicer than the simple point on my
Appaloosa. The decals and gorgeous grilver paint are executed so nicely.
The welds in the places where there are no lugs are uniform and clean. I
really like the "napkin holders" on the head tube also. I think they serve
a structural purpose and are aesthetically pleasing too.

We had a lot of soccer and projects for school going on this weekend. I was
sure I would not get it built up over the weekend. Still, knowing I was
taking today off, I was hoping that maybe by Tuesday I could get it out for
at least a shake down ride. Well, as luck would have it, we got hit with a
pretty nasty east coast rain storm that was just a drencher all day Sunday.
All soccer was cancelled. Projects were done on Saturday. Besides cooking
and chasing cabin feverish kids around the house from time to time, I was
able to focus on the build.

Again, as I went about the build I was continually impressed by Rivs level
of attention. Obviously they took it out of the box and went over it before
shipping it on to me. Even the water bottle screws had been taken out and
the threads lightly greased. I could also tell that a wheel set was very
lightly installed. Alignment check? I appreciate that they took the time to
do these things. I have had a couple of other frames from other companies
that I know were built in the same neighborhood in Taiwan, if not the same
factory. I never got the impression that they had left their boxes from the
time they were packed at the factory. Luckily there were no problems with
those frames, but as time goes on, all of these things that Riv does add up
and keep me coming back.

The build went smoothly, most of the parts used were from my used parts
bin. Some of you may remember me trying to sell my Compass Rene Herse
crankset about a year ago. I'm glad nothing came of that! This is the
perfect frame for that crank. I also had the SKF bottom bracket, so I
pulled the one that came with the frame and installed those. The chainrings
are a little worn though and the cassette that I am using here has some
miles too. I recently installed a new chain on these used parts and was
experiencing some chain skip. To avoid that I put a new chain on my
Appaloosa and used the old chain here. It has maybe 1200 miles on it and it
worked perfectly. The drive train is quiet, smooth and there is no skip.
Maybe I can rehab this drivetrain a bit and get the most miles out of it by
cutting down on the miles that I put on the new chain on the Appaloosa
before I switch it over to the Roadini little-by-little over time?

When Will called me to tell me that the frame was ready to ship, he also
mentioned that it was coming with a seat post. I was happy to hear this. I
thought Grant said that posts would not be included with these Roadini's.
The only 26.8mm post that I had on hand was a super long mtb post. I didn't
really want to use that one and was contemplating cutting it. Glad the
frame came with the post and I didn't have to deal with any of that. The
only new parts that I had to get were the wheels and the brake calipers. I
had the buttery Simplex Retrofriction shifters. I also had the cockpit: 48
Noodles, Shimano levers and Nitto 9cm stem. I have two pretty used tire
choices that I need to wear out before I get any new tires. I decided to
start with the Kojaks. They are worn a little square but definitely have
some life left in them. Nominally they are 35s, but they measure 32 on the
A23 rims with tubes. I also have a pair of Jack Brown Greens that I suspect
will measure out closer to their 33.3 size. I have 3 Brooks B17 saddles.
The newest one is on the Appaloosa and is staying there. My son is using
another on his Crosscheck. The oldest one by far is this one on this build.
Bought, used and soaked multiple times since 2009, it was getting a little
saggy, cracked at the rivets and long in the tooth. Boy, was I happy to see
that big foam block protecting the fork tips in the box! I went about
cutting and stuffing per Grants instructions and it feels great now!
Chainstay protector and bar wrap are Newbaums green (the middle one I think
in Rivs photos). Lets see,

[RBW] Lost & found anything while riding?

2017-10-29 Thread William R.
I left my saddle bag open once for I don’t know how long. At first I thought
nothing was missing. Luck! Later I learned that one brand new summer glove was
missing. The nice ones that Riv sells. Never found it and was stuck with one
brand new glove. Not a huge financial loss, but still quite Frustrating.

I have found many items on the paths around here: lights, jackets, keys, etc.
If they are bright items and off to the side, I just leave them. If they are in
the path, I pick them up and put them at the nearest entrance, fence post or
wall. Hopefully the person that lost them will come back and have an easy time
finding them.

Once on the road I found a wallet. I could tell it hadn’t been there long.
Opened it up, lots of cash, cards, drivers liscence and business card matching
name on liscence. I called the guy up and said I had his wallet. He didn’t
think so, thought I was scamming him or something. Eventually he came around,
realized it was possible and grew incredibly thankful.

Oh, and on the road over the years, I have found many a tool that has fallen
off the back of trucks. Those I pick up and keep!

2017-10-20 Thread William R.
If we are talking Surly Steamrollers, the clearance is much better than 25s. It
will easily fit 38s. Though these days maybe more than that would be good. 38s
without fenders is pretty much the max. I had one for a few years, and that was
a few years ago at this point, it was a fun bike as I recall. Only braze ons
for one bottle, so I never went crazy far on it, but I have other bikes for
those kinds of rides. It really shined for me in short “spirited” rides. High
intensity I guess you could say. I had it set up with a “flip flop” hub that
was fixed on one side and free on the other. Riding fixed was a kick in the
butt in a fun kind of way. I’m a bigger guy (215+lbs) and so the stout tubing
worked better for me than it would lighter riders. And with out the other
components it always felt quite light and nimble. Never had a Quikbeam or any
of Rivendells other single speed offerings, so can’t compare it. You can always
find Rivs to feel and perform better, but in a pinch Surlys are not too bad.
Disclaimer: just one guys two cents.

[RBW] Wrecked my Atlantis

2017-10-16 Thread William R.
Hi John,

Sorry to hear of your accident. Hope you are feeling better. I live across the
river in Westchester. It’s not hard to imagine such a thing happening. These
things happen anywhere.

Are you thinking about Grants Appaloosa option? Not sure what size Atlantis you
have, but if you are interested in seeing and/or trying one, I’ve got one. It’s
a 58. Same intended purpose as an Atlantis, but different, I love mine.

[RBW] Thoughts on Devold boxer briefs?

2017-09-14 Thread William R.
The Devolder wool boxer briefs that Riv sells are my favorites to wear under
Musa shorts, pants, knickers, Compass knickers and some "big s" casual shorts
that I got this spring. The boxers just disappear for me under those yet they
provide the non-chafing support that I need. They wick away moisture like no
others, hang dry quickly after use and stay clean for a week of use between
washing alternating two pairs.

Two pairs alternated daily last me a year before they wear thin and holes
develop in areas. So I generally buy two new pairs from Riv every spring.

This spring when I went to the Riv site to replace them they were out of my
size. I waited for restock, but time was going by and I needed them. Looking
for the exact style that Riv carries elsewhere was frustrating.

So I ended up getting the two pairs of wool boxer briefs that I have been using
this year from an unlikely source for me. I will just call them "big
(overpriced) r". These wool briefs were priced more in line with my price point
than their other offerings. And they have served me well. Comparable to the
Devolders. Not made in Norway, but Vietnam, and they may be longer lasting.
Only half way through my year of use, so only time will tell on that last
point. So far so good though.

[RBW] Favorite Platform Pedals

2017-09-03 Thread William R.
Really happy with the VP "Push N2" aka VP-539 pedals that came stock on my
Appaloosa. They are super grippy with 10 spikes per side. Nice and thin like
the more expensive gripsters, but they also have reflectors. I liked them so
much that I bought a couple pairs online (Riv does not sell them) for $26 each.
But the originals are still going strong after thousands of miles of heavy
(me!) use. My son has a pair on his cross check and likes them a lot. And I
still have a new back up pair. They are black if that is an issue. The main
platforms are some kind of super tough plastic.

[RBW] Re: 200 miles on 10 bikes, an essentially pointless self-challenge

2017-08-26 Thread William R.
Bill,

I've been following this thread and enjoying your bikes and stories. 1000 miles
in a month is pretty impressive. I know there are segments of the cycling
populace where that's not that big of a deal. But in this segment, where a lot
of us are (ageing, speaking of myself only!) working stiffs with families, I
know that is no small feat. Looking back through my Cyclemeter meter app shows
699 as my highest monthly mileage. And that was a May a couple years back that
was unusually dry for the north east and I rode every day with not too many
miles in my legs from the preceding months. And I remember really "feeling" it!
Good on you! Looking forward to the rest of your bikes and your sabbatical.

[RBW] FS: Tektro V-Brakes, Stems, Stem Adapters, Raceface, SRAM, Drillium!

2017-08-20 Thread William R.
Hi. Clearing out some smalls that I just don't use. Making room for
Roadini. All prices include shipping to conus. Let me know of any problems
viewing flickr pics or if you need more pics. First come first served,
confirm first and then Paypal friends and family please!

Bill in Westchester, NY

Tektro V-Brakeset. Levers and Calipers pulled off of my Appaloosa after
about 6 months of use. Pads are pretty worn. $40

Threaded to Threadless Stem Adapter. I got this by mistake. It does not fit
a 1" threaded steerer (22.2). It DOES fit a rare 1.125" threaded steerer
(25.4). No star nut or top cap. New. $10

Gran Compe 202 Non Aero Brake Levers. Drilled! Super cool. Super nice. Very
little signs of use because I barely used them! $40

Velo Orange Threadless Stem Adapter. Fits in a regular 1" (22.2) threaded
steerer and works with a 1.125" (28.6) stem. Nice silver finish. Barely
used. Just one insertion mark. $15

SR Laprade 27.2 Fluted Seat Post. Old. Used. But in very good, functional
shape. $30

Raceface 1X Narrow/Wide 38T Chainring. Lightly used. No wear to the teeth.
Only some paint missing. Maybe 100 miles max. 1X was not for me. $25

Nitto Technomic Stem. Tall. 26.0 clamp, 12cm length. 240 mm overall height
(16cm above minimum insert line). 22.2 quill. $30

Nitto Tallux Stem. Tall like the Technomic above. Higher quality finish
though. 26.0 clamp. 9cm length. 22.2 quill. $40

SRAM Apex Compact Crankset with GXP Bottom Bracket. 175mm crank arm length.
Quite used but still smooth and functional. Lots of 'beuse, see photos. $30

[RBW] Roadini Gray vs Blue?

2017-08-05 Thread William R.
It's hard to go wrong. The biggest challenge with Riv colors is choosing. I
thought the original blue and butternut colors for the Appaloosa looked so nice
together on the log when they first showed them. I went back and forth many
times before landing on the "bustard". But now I have celeste Newbaums tape on
the bars and as the chainstay protector. Shellacked it looks close to the blue,
so I've got that combo I always liked.

With the Roadini the decision was easier. The silvery grey with the Italian
tricolor in the decals looks pretty badass to me. The noodle handlebar that I
have ready for it already has multiple spare colors of Newbaums on it. I think
it will look neat and eclectic, just like me!

But really, I don't think you can go wrong with a Riv color. They have such
good taste and really think it through. I think... :-)

[RBW] Roadini!

2017-08-04 Thread William R.
I put down for a 57cm in "grilver". Most of the parts that I need are in the
parts bin, including noodles, simplex dt shifters, xt mech, Brooks b17, and
Herse crankset, so it's going to be a pretty nice build. My Appaloosa has been
a fit and comfort revelation for me. But I have missed having a drop bar bike.
From what geo specs are known, it looks like it will be a similar ride quality
to the Joe. Hopefully this will be a "best of both worlds" bike for me. Really
looking forward to it!

[RBW] Re: What 'fast' tires for Rivendell Atlantis?

2017-06-26 Thread William R.
John G.: Are you riding the EL Snoqualmies? Sorry to hear about your rash of
flats. I recently had Rich Lesnick build me a new Atlas rim wheelset for my
Appaloosa and I've shod it with the standard Snoqs. No flats yet, but because
I'm weary of flats on my limited time weekday rides, I've been using them on
the weekends only. During the week I am riding Maxxis Torch tires that measure
53mm on the stock wheelset that came with the Joe. They are fast, grippy and
cushy. Really good all rounder tire in my opinion. 600 grams each - not too bad
in the weight dept. light supple casing very comparable to Schwalbe Lite Skin.
More tread tho, and zero flats so far. Will 53mm fit the Atlantis? If so maybe
give them a try.

Re: [RBW] Re: Fenders - worth the safety risks? Rethinking my fender use.

2017-06-02 Thread William R.
Thanks John. I will keep them in mind. Also the colorful new ones that Riv has.
Last night I crudely cut one out of an old water bottle and duct taped it to
the front fender. Of course it was completely dry out there this morning. If it
has the desired result I may "upgrade" to an actual product mudlap at some
point.

[RBW] Re: Fenders - worth the safety risks? Rethinking my fender use.

2017-06-01 Thread William R.
When the weather gets generally dry I prefer to not have fenders on my
Appaloosa. We do have a lot of squirrelly squirrels here in the north
eastern US. Lots of rabbits too on the MUP. They behave differently from
squirrels but also unpredictably! So, yes, I worry about that happening.
Sticks too. Hasn't happened yet, but still... I would say it's about 50/50
for the year on average having fenders on/off. I totally agree with bsnyc
about riding through unknown nasty stuff in the city too. So when I head in
that direction I like to be covered. It has been pretty wet here for most
of May. My morning ride for the 1st of June was no different. My back side
and saddle bag stay dry as does the headset. But with all of the organic
matter falling from the trees right now I've been getting this mess. I
think I will try to make a mud flap from an old water bottle tonight and
see how that goes. Seems like I just need one on the front so I will start
with that. Those are the P65s over Maxxis Torches if anyone wants to know.

[RBW] FS: Atlas/LX Rich Lesnik 650b Wheelset w/Babyshoe Pass Tires

2017-04-23 Thread William R.
Selling a really nice Rich Lesnik built 650b wheelset. Perfectly true, low
miles. No brake pad ridging in the rims at all. 32 spokes front and rear.
The Babyshoe Pass front tire is in very good condition. You can still see
all of the tread. The rear is more worn and there is a quarter inch gash
(see second photo) that while it does not go all the way through, I can see
the casing. I would say it still has enough life in it with a boot on that
spot. Enough to get a feel for these great tires at least.

They come as shown in photos with tires, tubes and skewers.

$325 shipped to CONUS

[RBW] Re: 700 x 45-50 options

2017-04-17 Thread William R.
Spot on Stuart. Great photos too, really nice Joe! Read about the Torches here
and checked out Maxxis' specs. They sounded so good I ordered a pair from
Germany. While I waited for them to arrive, I took the Almotions off (don't
think I can ever like them) and replaced them with my Lite Skin Thunder Burts.
The Thunder Burts are so good. The only place I feel they are lacking a little
is on pavement. And most of my rides involve at least 50% pavement. That has
kept my eyes open for a better all rounder. Enter the Torches. Comparing them
side by side before mounting the casings seem almost identical. And right away
I noticed abrupt start and uniform thickness of the tread from edge to edge. I
guess that is where the extra 200 grams per tire is. Still, these are a good
200 grams per tire less than the Almotions too. I like the Torches a lot. I
think the only area they are lacking a. It against the T-Burts is weight. I
have been riding them daily for a week now. They are fast and corner better
than any tire in this size range that I have tried. I guess they perform like a
good bmx tire should. I plan to keep these on as my favorite all round tire. If
I do an all or mostly dirt ride I will put the Thunder Burts on. Though I am
guessing the Torches will perform well in the dirt too.

Re: [RBW] Re: 700 x 45-50 options

2017-03-28 Thread William R.
These Almotions are the first Schwalbe tires that I have bought that were
anything other than perfectly round. I have had Kojaks, Big Bens and
Thunder Burts. All were/are great. Third ride on these this morning and
they seem to be getting better little by little. Or am I getting used to
it? I will keep riding them and see. It certainly doesn't seem as painfully
obvious as it was when I first rolled on them.

And yes Scott, the reflective stripe on these is all over the place, that
will never smooth out. More eye catching for drivers though! So a plus?

[RBW] Re: Car Bike Rack

2017-03-28 Thread William R.
Thanks for sharing Leah. This Saris looks like it would be a good rack for
my situation. I am currently experiencing a car rack conundrum though. We
are a one car family (my wife and I, plus two kids) and we just recently
bought a new-to-us Outback wagon. It came with a nice 1.25" trailer hitch
installed. I think I may need to upgrade to 2" though as the choices
(strength?) of rear bike carriers seem limited in that size. And I know
that there are 1.25" to 2" adapters available, but they kind of scare me
and put the rack further behind the car about 6". So... I either upgrade
the hitch to a 2" or go with something like the Kuat Transfer that can take
three bikes on a 1.25" hitch and put one bike on the roof? Or in the trunk?
But that doesn't really work because when we are going on trips with the
dog in the trunk and all of our stuff in a pod on the roof (because of dog
in the trunk!), this is the most common time that we actually want all four
bikes on the car. I'm not even sure if there will be room on the roof for a
bike and the pod (36" wide)... As you can see, I don't really have this
figured out yet. Any thoughts would be great appreciated.

[RBW] Re: Ride Report from Beacon: An Applaloosa and a Rivendell Fork Hit the Road

2017-03-28 Thread William R.
Hi Roberta,

The bag is a Sackville Saddlesack XSmall - tan available from Riv here:
https://www.rivbike.com/collections/bags/products/sackville-saddlesack-xsmall-tan
It is a great bag and cavernous for anything with XSmall in its description.
Not so big that it hits the backs of your legs while pedaling.

That area where Mark lives is great riding and worth the trip if it seems far.
I drove up on Saturday from Dobbs Ferry, New York and it took just under a
hour. Next time I hope to also be in "shape" and ride up.

When these future rides happen, all will be welcome.

[RBW] Re: 700 x 45-50 options

2017-03-27 Thread William R.
I have been riding the Schwalbe Almotions (50-622) on my Appaloosa for a
couple of days. They came folded. Very stiff sidewalls. I mounted them on
Atlas rims on Friday night, spun them in the stand, very lumpy. I let the
air out a couple of times and tried to get them seated better. Rode them on
the ride with Mark in Beacon on Saturday and they were just really
lumpy/bumpy, but it seemed like they were getting smoother as time and the
miles went by. Dropped the pressure to 50 rear/45 front before heading out
on Sunday. They were better. I want to like them. I am going to give them a
good chance and see if they round perfectly out. If not, back on will go
the T-Burts, they will go back on at some point anyway, they are so good! I
put the Snoqualmie's that I had on the Cross Check build that I am doing
for my son. I might get another pair for my go fast summer tires. There
seems to be a gap there in 622 fast, light tread tires from 44 (41 really
in the Snoqs) to about 60. I wish Schwalbe would fill up their Kojak line
with 45, 50, 55+ sizes and size down their Big Ones through the same range.
And as long as I am wishing, I wish Jan would come out with some 48, 54 and
60's in 700/622 fast tires. Those Torches look like they would be good on
the Appaloosa too. I will look forward to your report on them Stuart.

[RBW] Ride Report from Beacon: An Applaloosa and a Rivendell Fork Hit the Road

2017-03-27 Thread William R.
Hey, sorry it took me so long to notice this post. It was a fun ride in an area
that I have never been before. Nice rolling terrain and very light traffic. I
am seeing a lot of shots that I did not realize you were taking. Good job!
Thanks again. Looking forward to more rides at warmer times!
