Re: [RBW] Muttonmaster
The photos are very typical of scenes your might see in the Four Corners area, particularly that of the 2 Navajo women, who look as if they might be middle-aged daughter and ancient grandmother. It is typical for Navajo young people, from childhood up to late adolescence or early adulthood, to have open and fresh faces, like the one shown, while the elders have a still, impassive, stoic, even granite-like countenance. But this impassivity of demeanor and character goes together with a very earthy and even ribald sense of humor; the contrast between gravity, impassibility, and dignity of countenance and very earthy -- but still dignified! -- spoken ejaculations was very striking, to an outsider like myself. * Even many of those more or less roped in to the white man's culture still retained something of this very typical combination of impassivness and down-to-earth-ness. I recall watching some utterly evanescent comedy movie from the late '80s which in a scene leading up to the film's denouement had a pilotless airplane taxiing in circles under power around the vast dirt lot of a rez trading post, while some hapless young man from back east in a dark suit ran yelling after it, desperately trying to board. Meanwhile, on the covered porch of the dusty trading post, 3 old Navajo men in cowboy hats, western shirts, jeans, and boots sat rocking, silently watching the antics. The scene continued for several minutes until the young man managed to grab hold, fling himself inside, and take off. There was a period of silence as the dust settled; the old men continued to rock, silent, faces impassive, looking off into the empty distance that makes up the rez landscape. Finally, one old man turned to the one rocking next to him, and, in a quiet voice, made a presumably sarcastic remark, in Navajo, of course, at which all 3 chuckled quietly amongst themselves. Very, very typical! *(And perhaps shared among traditional people of all cultures, more than among moderns of any culture. A common friend told me that a traditional Catholic priest I knew, who gave me good counsel, and who suffered 10 years from bone marrow cancer without, said our friend, once asking God to alleviate his suffering [said priest had been a prominent Boston-area thoracic surgeon who went into psychiatry and spiritual counseling after health problems forced him into early retirement] -- said priest remarked to our common friend: "When you're being fucked, you might as well bend over and enjoy it." Priest was son of the great metaphysician and historian of eastern and western sacred art, Ananda Coomaraswamy, whom you can read about in Wikipedia.) I really enjoyed that post Patrick. "Thursday" has, I believe, an indomitable spirit, and he would be an asset to any community. He produced machines that, I believe, literally put food on peoples tables. I am, admittedly, fat and happy, and should be grateful that I can spend vast (comparatively) sums on bike after bike, simply so I can ride a different one, with different tires and handlebars, on a different surface today. The Muttonmaster exists in different forms in different countries, where I see pictures of people carrying unfathomable loads (double TTs or diagatubes galore!). Also, why the f*** should someone have to give up their horse so they can have a few more sheep?!?!?!?! What a disgraceful way to treat native peoples. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Segueing off Patrick's thread and my tangent: this is another tangent, but probably of interest to at least some RBW-listers. Somewhat close to home since I spent 4+ years in Gallup, NM. http://63xc.com/thursday/muttonmaster.htm > Resumes, LinkedIn profiles, bios, and letters that get interviews. > By-the-hour resume and LinkedIn coaching. > Other professional writing services. > http://www.resumespecialties.com/ > Patrick Moore > Alburquerque, New Mexico, Etats Unis d'Amerique > ** > ** > *Auditis an me ludit amabilis insania?* > -- Resumes, LinkedIn profiles, bios, and letters that get interviews.
