[RBW] Re: Help with touring route suggestions leaving Seattle, WA

2017-06-04 Thread Ty Graham

You can train to Mount Vernon and Transit to the ferry dock. I'd advise
against riding Mt. Vernon to Anacortes; there's pretty gross traffic.
There's also a shuttle from Seattle downtown to the Anacortes ferry dock.

You can PM if you have questions about the San Juans. I've been riding up
there off and on since the 70s.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I think we're really leaning towards
trying to put together a route that incorporates the San Juan Islands.

i live in bellingham.
vancouver and the galloping goose is a great ride with a moserate ride type
companion. i haven t found great food in victoria or sidney although the greek
place in the side street in sidney is ok/good enough.

getting a place in Port Townsend and doing day rides is a good option. PT has
good food.

another option might be Mt Vernon and ride up to Edison for freat food at
tweets.

if you rent a car, stay in bellingham and drive to edison and launch from there.
Bellingham is a bigger better town.

if you cycle out old samish from bellingham you dont need a car...

I highly recommend the Washington edition of the Cycling Sojourner books
for a good overview of options, as there are so many for riding out of
Seattle that time of year. The Olympic peninsula and San Juan islands are
both good places to start looking at route planning. Ferries leaving west
out of Seattle will get you headed in the direction of the peninsula and
Port Townsend is a nice day ride from Bainbridge.

greetings

I like in Vancouver, and until I retired worked with Parks Canada*. They
have oTENTiks at many locations, including the wonderful Fort Rodd Hill
(near Esquimault Lagoon not far from Victoria).

Have visited them on a number of occasions and they are terrific. However,
I have yet to stay in one, boo-hoo.

https://www.pc.gc.ca/en/lhn-nhs/bc/fortroddhill/activ/activ6

They say in the blurb you have to have a valid park entry pass, but note
that 2017 is Canada's 150th and so passes are FREE.

* of all the great offices I worked in (I know, no matter how nice it is
still indoors...) Fort Rodd Hill is my favorite for the view, the grounds,
the climate...

I live on Vancouver Island. You can take the Cliper Ferry from downtown
Seattle, or another ferry from Anacortes, or a third from Port Angeles. All
wind up in Victoria. There is a cycling trail through the entire city (the
Galloping Goose), as well as routes up the Island. There are any number of
excellent, safe cycle routes in the Pacific Northwest. Think about how many
days you've got and google rides in the area. You'll have a great time.

The Cascade Bicycle Club is doing a two-day ride to Vancouver, BC, in August:
https://www.cascade.org/rides-major-rides/ride-seattle-vancouver-party-rsvp?campaign=7013700Q5vWAAS=mailchimp_source=Cascade%27s+Master+List_campaign=daa6186731-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_06_01_17_medium=email_term=0_7ba267b74d-daa6186731-84213637=t(EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_06_01_17)

Might be worth looking into—perhaps you can get their route sheet?

You could also go the other direction and follow the Seattle-to-Portland route.
That’s 200 miles, but if you go halfway you’ll be in Centralia, a very nice
small city with lots of dining and lodging options.
