Some clearly do. In Lancaster county, PA, the Amish don't use
pedal-bicycles, they use a large-wheeled scooter. In the past, however, I
recall seeing them using bicycles; not sure when they changed. In other
areas, practices vary. I believe I've seen Amish in Southern Maryland on
bicycles (although it's hard to tell sometimes, there are also Mennonites
 in the area).

According the the interwebs the use of bicycles by the Amish vary according
to Geography. They are not permitted in Lancaster County but are permitted
in other areas.

*The PA Amish church placed a taboo on the bicycle in order to keep youth
close to home. However, non-motorized scooters are viewed as a compromise
between walking and the bicycle, and many youth ride them to school.*

I always love your ride reports -- grand long adventure! We need more
Sabbath in more lives and laundry hanging on Saturdays to make it happen.
Thank you for the vicarious bonk, recovery and perseverance!

With abandon,

2013-10-27 Thread Evan
Saturday is laundry day in Lancaster county. Riding through miles of
farmland, we see clothes hanging from lines stretched between homes and
barns or sheds. Lots of black, single color, simple clothes snapping and
whipping in the cold steady wind. They remind me of Tibetan prayer flags.
  Beautiful.
