I didn't like the (non carved) C-17 on my Sam. Don't recall if I had
Noodles or Albas on there when I tried, but either would have been around
saddle height.
I moved it to my Brompton and I like it there just fine.
Very happy with the Rivet Pearl which is now on the Sam.

[RBW] Re: How to select a Brooks saddle

2019-01-17 Thread John Phillips
Has anyone measured the width & length of their Cambium C19? Brooks says
all versions of the C19 are 275mm long & 184mm wide.

I was about to order the All Weather Carved C19 after reading some people
found carved version to be a bit more comfortable, but I wasn't sure if my
sit bones would fit between the rivets. Then I remembered I had one of the
older original C19's sitting somewhere in the closet. So I dug it out, sat
on it and tested where my sit bones were, then I measured the distance
between the rivets, the overall width and overall length.

My C19 is 176mm wide and 270mm long, not the 184mm wide and 275mm long
listed on the Brooks England website.

So, could anyone tell me what the actual dimensions of the new All Weather
version of the C19 actually are?

Maybe I'm just cranky today, and this doesn't amount to a hill of beans,
but if the All Weather C19's are even less wide, I'd like to know before I
order one.

Thanks much,
John

[RBW] Re: How to select a Brooks saddle

2019-01-09 Thread Tim Bantham
Just a quick update on my saddle exploits. I borrowed a C17 carved from a
friend and I can say without a doubt that I like it better than the regular
C17. The difference in the amount of "give" is noticeable but I am not yet
convinced that this is the one. What I don't like about it is that I can
feel its width if that makes sense. I think I just need something narrower.
I have a Charge Spoon that I was able to pick up new for less than $30. I
am going to try that one next. If that doesn't work I am going to try the
C15 carved.

[RBW] Re: How to select a Brooks saddle

2019-01-09 Thread masmojo
The article was pretty good, but here's how they break down for me.
#1 C-17 carved
#2 C-17 All weather
#3 broken in B-17
#4 regular C-17
#5 regular C-19
#6 B-72

This list is most of the Brooks saddles I have spent considerable time with. I
haven't tried the B-17 with the slot or the carved C-19, but I would expect
they would slot into the upper middle & middle respectively.

To answer a question not asked, I just want to give a shout out to Rivet. I
tried and used several Brooks saddles over the years (never a Cambian) and
discovered in getting my fit dialed in on my Cheviot, that the Rivet was a
better option, in good measure because its rails allow for being placed
further back (already using a Nitto set-back post). The particular Rivet
saddle I have is the Loveland. The biggest difference visually is the
shorter skirt and the silver-colored steel rails (which I vastly prefer). Rivet

[RBW] Re: How to select a Brooks saddle

2018-12-19 Thread Kevin Mulcahy
The C17 is too wide for me, even on upright bikes. I use one for a couple
years on my comutter but it caused some pain on my inner thighs on rides
over 20 miles. I now use the C15 on two of my most-ridden bikes and
rally like it. One slotted and one standard. I agree that the carved
version is more comfortable and I use that one on my rigid mtb, where the
extra spring comes in handy. I'm not sure why Riv doesn't sell the 15.

For me, B17s were always most comfortable right outta the box, and once
they grew more hammocky I'd need to start tilting the nose up and then
eventually that led to other issues. I still use a B17 on my tandem, but I
don't put a whole lot of miles on the bike. I certainly wouldn't use a
nose-up saddle on hillybike bike, you're just asking to get skewered.

[RBW] Re: How to select a Brooks saddle

2018-12-19 Thread Ed Carolipio
I had a similar experience with the C17: I tried it on my Appaloosa with
Albatross and it was only ok for short distances. I put the C17 on a
Roadini with drops and it's excellent there. I now have a B17 Standard on
the Appaloosa.

I saw Will's statement on the carved saddle and, though I haven't made the
leap of getting a carved C17, I would tend to agree with him based on my
experiences. I was reluctant to go to a C19 because the sit bone width
wasn't a problem with the C17.
