Re: [RBW] Generator lighting questions
I have a Spanninga SPXb that has been mounted on a rear plastic fender since 2006. It is the second set of fenders. I have done over 10,000K of randonneuring events, plus probably an equal number of training miles, and it is still in good shape. Ralph On 1/17/2011 11:40 PM, b hamon wrote: Unscientific poll: a. Front light mounting: How many of you don't normally use a small front rack but specifically installed one to protect the headlight? And how many of you just went with a fork crown mount sans rack? Re: [RBW] Generator lighting questions
Beth, Below is my experience with your questions. a. I have my light mounted to a plastic SKS fender. Has been on there since Sept 09. This bike is ridden most days and is my touring bike. No issues to date. b. I routed mine inside the fender. Taped it up with black tape, Gorilla brand. Then drilled a small hole next to the light and ran the single wire out and connected it to the light. Since the fenders were plastic the ground circuit didn't work so I ran a short length of wire from the ground lead of the light to one of the fender stay bolts. c. Mine is mounted to the fork crown. Bike has linear brakes and low rider racks. The light clears both of the handlebar bags I use. I have a Spanninga Spxb (battery light) mounted to a chromoplastic fender. No issues over maybe 1 miles. I also have a 4D Lite Plus mounted to a metal fender (maybe 3000 miles on this one). The roll bar does have some scratches, so it'd doing its job (no scratches on the lens). I think that I bang the light sometimes while locking up and so forth. The light works fine, except that the inline connectors I installed to make it easier to disassemble the bike are unreliable. I plan to rewire with a continuous run from headlight to taillight, which will solve that problem. The only times I've noticed myself scraping the lights have been when hanging the bikes up: I roll the bike on its rear wheel up to the hook and, if I'm not careful, scrape the light on the floor. I think that most fenders, plastic or metal, will support a generator taillight. They're very light. Use fender washers to spread the load. --glenn West Chester, PA, USA -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Every dyno headlight I have is on a front rack. Fork mount looks too vulnerable to me to a spinning front wheel -- a problem the Tout Terrain frames cleverly deal with using a stop on the steerer tube. I don't have a Tout Terrain, but thinking about why the stop was put there has led me to a default mounting on a front rack for all my headlights.
