[RBW] How do you track your mileage?

2018-12-20 Thread Fullylugged
I am a long time user of www.bikejournal.com. Track mileage on multiple bikes
as well as tires and chains. Has discussion forum similar to this list. Basic
membership is free. I use it a lot and I am a paid subscriber. Has line graph
to show progress towards any goal you set. Options for private or public
access to your results. And of course, I have the journal of my rides.
Downloadable. I've been keeping data since 2005.

[RBW] How do you track your mileage?

2018-12-18 Thread stoker
Like many of the previous responses, I also use Strava. It works quite well for
my needs - tracking mileage and sharing ride experiences with friends (although
my primary use is to track mileage). I began using it in June of 2013 and I’m
coming up on 47,000 miles. I primarily use my iPhone to record rides (super
easy) or I use a Garmin 520 for longer/complex routes. Uploading to Strava is a
cinch when paired to my phone at the end of the ride. - Robb S (Strava profile)

[RBW] How do you track your mileage?

2018-12-17 Thread Philip Williamson
I will more diligently use Strava next year to track miles by bike. Currently I
use Strava sometimes, and MapMyRide for bigger rides, and my commute. MapMyRide
talks to my company’s “Vitality” program, which gives me a discount on my
insurance premiums.
Strava is far superior, and is not owned by UnderArmour.

I've been using Map my Ride for about 2 1/2 years, I also uploaded Ride with

[RBW] How do you track your mileage?

2018-12-16 Thread franklyn
I use ridewithgps's app on a phone as a cyclometer as well for navigation (when
I need it). But I don't use my actual phone. I bought an older Motorola Moto G
for $20 on eBay and use it as a WiFi only device. Ridewithgps has offline
navigation feature if you have a subscription. I tend to put my phone and this
Moto G on airplane mode to save battery when I ride in places with suspect
reception (the phones battery drains quickly when they are in bad reception
areas).

You can enter your bikes in the app and choose the one you rode when you save
your ride. I also keep a old cyclometer on my town bike. You can adjust mileage
for a bike on ridewithgps. The app also has a feature to let you keep track of
your maintenance.

Using a cheap ex-phone as the cyclometer has an additional benefit of not
fumbling with your phone on your bike and accidentally dropping it.

I've been pretty happy with the free version of Map My Ride. I have used it for
a little more than 2 years now and it has been pretty easy to use and reliable,
well, except when I destroyed my phone on one ride!

Phone apps just seem to be the most convenient and practical way of tracking
rides.

Re: [RBW] How do you track your mileage?

2018-12-15 Thread Patrick Moore
I switched to Cyclemeter a number of years ago from Endomodo and find it
much more controllable and easy to use. This must have been 2012 or 2013,
so don't know how Endomodo is now, but back then it was annoying.

I use 1 iPhone for 4 bikes and record the mileage on a complex spreadsheet
that tracks daily, cumulative annual, and cumulative cumulative mileage for
each bike, with a descriptor field ("Home Church Home via No Divers.
Channel outbound/Guadalupe return", for example), and a far-right section
to track maintenance. One of the benefits of business school was becoming a
minor ace with Excel -- used to do payroll taxes with a huge spreadsheet I
built that worked very well -- until you got one variable field wrong ...

I renew the mileage spreadsheet each year.

BTW, it's easy to build little spreadsheets for gear inches or development
or gain ratios; I like gear inches since they tell the educated mind the
same thing and require fewer steps.

That's certainly not going to be the case this year.  We've just broken
the record for rainfall in the metro DC are, makiing 2018 the wettest
year ever recorded around here, and it's taken a toll on my riding.  I
had hoped to reach 9,000 by year's end and it doesn't look as though I'm
going to make it.  I'm at 8773, and with only 16 days remaining I'll be
lucky if I can even make a nice round .

My high, a few years ago when we had a lovely warm winter and early
spring, was 1 -- and when I hit that, I disconnected the computer
and rode the last 4 or 5 miles back to the ride start without recording
the mileage.

That's fine if you only ride one bike.  If you have six or seven

track of
maintenance.  (When was the last time I put a new cassette on this

Re: [RBW] How do you track your mileage?

2018-12-15 Thread Bill Schairer
I use Strava with my cell phone. There are other cell phone apps that probably
work well also. The reasons I like it:

1. I use the free subscription
2. I’d probably have my phone with me anyway
3. I can easily track the mileage for each bike as well as the components on
the bike, if I I choose to enter them
4. I like the visual of where I have ridden. Strava used to offer a free trial
on the paid subscription where I could pull up my “heat map” that shows all the
places I’ve ridden. Probably the one benefit of the paid subscription that
might motivate me to upgrade my subscription.
5. Can be used even if no cell service, for example for foreign travel. GPS
data recorded while riding and then superimposed onto a map later when wifi or
cell connection made.
6. Global “heat maps” are useful for searching out poplular rides/routes
7. Flyby feature (other Strava riders out while you are riding) is fun and from
which I have obtained new ride/route ideas. “Why is that guy riding that way
instead of the way I’m going?” “Oh, I didn’t know there was a trail there.”
“that looks like a fun route.” “I wonder if that is a safer route?” Etc
8. Atltitude gain, grade %, max speed, avg speed, time comparison data are all
fun
9. Help keeps me motivated to get out and ride, sad as that might be - more of
function of a goal than the app but the app allows me to track toward the goal
10. I can recreate routes that I rode years ago and add them in with
appropriate dates which will populate my “heat map” from which I get the visual
of the different places I’ve ridden. Obviously, speed data not a part of such
added rides but total mileage is.

I’m probably forgetting some. I do not use a handlebar mount. I just fire up
the app, turn the screen off, put the phone in my pocket and then pull it out
if I need it. I’ve used it on tours with no battery issues if I turn cell
service off so the phone is not constantly seeking service. I have tried a
couple mounts and disliked them because they rattle and finally decided that
monitoring all the data while riding is too distracting anyway.

I also paid a one month subscription for the Ride with GPS cell app for the ACA
tour on the GDMBR. This had the advantage of my being able to download the GPX
files from ACA for the tour. While on the road I could then pull up the map
for the day and find out exactly where I was - particularly useful when coming
to forks in the road or turns. I think one might also be able to get audible
turn by turn directions but I did not use this. Again, this was all without
cell service. The GPX file has the map downloaded onto your device and the GPS
signal places you on the map. I don’t believe Strava has this same feature
paid or unpaid. I ran both apps while touring or just fired up Ride with GPS
when I needed it.

Map My Ride is another app out there. I think they all have paid and unpaid
service. Probably worth looking at all of them to see which one best provides
whatever one is looking for at any given price. I think each is slightly
different in that regard.

My main complaint is that, as yet, I’ve found no way to download all that
Strava data to an Excel file for really anal analysis.

Bill

I use endomondo.com -- because the bicycle club I belong to has an
annual mileage challenge that uses it.  It's possible to synchronize it
with phone apps, GPSs, etc., but it's not necessary.  I just type my
info in on a web form.

I also track maintenance activity on my bicycles by means of a spreadsheet.
