[RBW] OT - Wooden Boat Build Complete (and the paint matches my Saluki!)

2018-07-30 Thread Tony DeFilippo
Thanks everyone! I love the ideas for towing via bike or even loading a Riv
into one of these CLC boats.

Will - thank you... or curse you... For the linkage to Gentry Boats. That
sailing canoe gets my mind racing. I'm intrigued by the lower weight, low cost
and speedier assembly granted by the skin on frame method.

Lambbo - great to see there is some more cross over in communities! I'm a bit
jealous if the greater space afforded by your NE Dory and I love your run down
of the Riv models to CLC models!

Jandrews - loving the zero stem, it rather I'm loving the handlebar/cockpit
geometry it affords on this bike. I've never been more comfortable on my Saluki
with any other combo. From a looks perspective I'd prefer a little bit of stem
extension.

[RBW] OT - Wooden Boat Build Complete (and the paint matches my Saluki!)

2018-07-30 Thread WETH
Dear Tony,
Congratulations on finishing this beautiful boat. I enjoyed hearing about your
progress this spring. I can’t wait to see it in person. Perhaps you need a
way to carry the Saluki on the boat, too. Again, great work.
All the best,
Erl

Nice job. I like it. Towing was one of the first things I thought of when
I saw it. Maybe use some flip up dinghy wheels like the Davis
Wheel-A-Weigh and a mast extension for a bike hitch. Could make a light
weight bike tow-able package.

The trick would be rigging up some fat 650B tired wheels for a tow vehicle
I think...

2018-07-30 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Hitch that puppy up to your Saluki and off you go! Brilliant! Thank you for
sharing. (I only partly jest, I bet it is pullable by bike, if not practical to
do so.)

With abandon,
Patrick

[RBW] OT - Wooden Boat Build Complete (and the paint matches my Saluki!)

2018-07-30 Thread Tony DeFilippo

Certainly off topic but I'd had a couple inquiries about my wooden boat kit
building experience and list member Erl mentioned that he thought the boat
was painted to match my Saluki based on my IG feed (close but not
perfect)... so I figured I'd throw up a couple pictures. The boat is a
Chesapeake Light Craft Passagemaker Dinghy, it's built of Okoume marine
plywood, the parts are pre cut by CNC machine and the instruction book is
pretty darn complete. The construction method is called 'stitch and glue',
the major connections are all stiched together with copper wires and then
epoxy (glue) makes the permanent connection (lots of epoxy). We started
right after New Years and it went in the water at my Mom's lakehouse last
week. Very interesting project and I wouldn't be surprised to embark on
future boat builds based on how this one turned out.

For the quasi-Riv content... this particular model is billed as a good 'All
Rounder', rowing, sailing and taking a <4hp motor well. Oh and her rig -
the 'balanced lug' is decidedly retro and unracer. And while not Riv
directly you might be amused to know that the founder of CLC sold the
company to it's lead designer and went on to start Velo Orange,
subsequently also sold to its employees.

I was most tickled with her rowing last week to be honest, 8' oars and a
fixed seat, 2 rowing positions based on whether you have passengers... the
boat really moved and responded well to the effort. I'm looking forward to
getting out and doing more rowing on her. Sailing was great with one, a
bit complex with two adults. I've got some learning to do managing the
sailing gear on deck with a second crew in a compact space. Oh and the
name - "Mischief Managed".

If you are interested in the build process I've got a start to finish
collection of photo's over on google
