Glad you like it, but I told you so
My sweet spot for the 26 wheeled Atlantis was the 2.1 Continental
Town and Country tire with Albatross bars and a Brooks B-72.

RE: [RBW] Re: AT 0154

2009-12-11 Thread Frederick, Steve
The XD has more flare/heel clearance. The arm's are angled outward away from
the spindle hole, and thus can be used with a shorter BB spindle. They are
also a bit thicker in profile since they are not forged in the same was as the
AT's were. The AT is low profile, which means the arms are straight from the
spindle hole to the pedal hole--no flare for heel clearance. Thus it's spindle
has to be long enough to get them out past the point where they'll clear the
chainstays. This worked better when they were new and rear hub spacing was
120-126mm, I think. Trying to fit the to my 135mm OLD frame was a challenge.
Turns out my pedaling style appreciates more heel clearance and a Q-factor
above 160mm anyway, so going with the XD's was not a hardship. But the AT's
are sure pretty--very narrow in profile and beautifully polished.

On the Saluki/AHH; an offset 122.5mm spindle works well for a 2-ring
Sugino AT, 127mm for a triple.

[RBW] Re: AT 0154

2009-12-10 Thread rcnute
I'll reveal mine too. According to my limited understanding it was
designed for a long asymmetric spindle and the driveside of modern
cranksets like the XD take that into account so modern symmetric BBs
work. I asked the bike shop to futz with it and the granny was still
too close with a really long spindle. So I'm putting an XD on with a
113 BB and all will be well. Anyone want some AT cranks?

But Doug, then what excuse would I have for the Rambouillet? :) I
have 1.25 Paselas on the Atlantis now just out of curiosity with some
1.75s in reserve.

It's a complicated story of chance and bike lust.

Awhile ago I was trying to sell a 58 Saluki and got an offer to
trade. It wasn't what I was looking for at the time, but it seems
like every time fall/winter comes around I want a touring bike (then
in spring/summer I think gee, wouldn't it be fun to get a new fast
bike?). I was thinking Surly, but then got to thinkin', maybe that
Atlantis is still available? And here I am. Now I can wait until
spring/summer to build up the Rambouillet for my go-fast jones.
