I use mine on and off (don't always need that much space) and it goes
on and off easily, no problems with the velcro.
I too opt not to use the handlebar straps since it holds just fine
without.
The only thing that bothers me is an aesthetic issue... the top flap
sags. I put a piece of black cardboard in the map holder and that
helps stiffen it.
