[RBW] Re: Alternative to Halfmitts?

2019-12-11 Thread Matt B.
I wish Riv would bring back the half-mitts! They also work great over wool
gripper gloves; I can ride in temps down into the teens no problem that
way. Anyway I have two pairs and have used the heck out of them. I have
had to stitch them back together a couple times when the original thread
has failed.

Actually in the SF Bay Area half mits without gloves under are the bees knees.
Keep your fingers from getting cold when you start out, and easily slip you
fingers out if they start to get too warm. For descents or clouds blocking
nature’s heat lamp that start to chill your didgits, just slip em back into the
mitts. Brilliant I tell you, brilliant.

2019-12-10 Thread Benjamin L. Kelley
Last winter I picked up a set of Bike Iowa's Pogie Lites for my commute.
Not cold enough here(Brooklyn) for full pogies and these keep enough
wind/rain/snow off and create a nice warm micro climate inside enough that
I can wear thin wool liners rather than something thicker that's going to
either soak thru or loose dexterity.

Honestly bike pogies or bar mitts would proabbly be the best. Look goofy
and stay on your bike but they are super nice for winter riding.

Chris, Yes, the halfmitts allow for ease of gloved finger dexterity if
needed. I've not used them, but they are a windblock for the thumb as well
as a combined air pocket for four fingers to be added over a wool mitten to
extend the temperature window into colder temps. Great if you are in a San

[RBW] Re: Alternative to Halfmitts?

2019-12-07 Thread 'Deacon Patrick' via RBW Owners Bunch
I use boiled wool glomitts.
https://www.sweaterchalet.com/dachstein-woolwear/dw-3115-adult-mitts/#cc-m-product-11727274031

It's a different system entirely, but most, if not all, your riding would
be covered by one pair, with the balance covered with a pair of chopper
mitts over them for the colder days. Boiled wool; breathes beautifully, but
also greatly dampens wind. Allows for finger dexterity and warmth while
instantly having a mitten as needed. At around 20˚F, I add chopper mitts
(cheap leather ones work well for starters, I use these:
https://empirecanvasworks.com/product/true-north-mittens/) and am good to
about zero, then I add a second pair of wool liners (that came with the
chopper mitts) and am good to -20˚F.

With abandon,
Patrick
