[RBW] Re: Anyone oil and beeswax cork grips?

2013-04-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
Update: Oiling is working great. Just enough oil/beeswax to polish the
outside and then keep doing layers now and again (same as my oak peddles.
Still no warmer weather, yet but it seems to grip better than shellac.

Patrick

[RBW] Re: Anyone oil and beeswax cork grips?

2013-04-02 Thread Deacon Patrick
Update: I sanded the grips on my Albatross bars and rubbed in/ melted with
my hands the bear grease (4 coconut oil : 1 beeswax). Of course it is a
high of freezing today, so they won't absorb much, but given warmer days
and a few more light applications, and they should be good to go. On my wee
ride, they rode wonderfully, though at 32˚F at the time it was hardly a
sweaty hand test. Grin.

Colonel: sorry I missed your post. Yes, I ride barefoot and love my oak
platform pedals.

WIth abandon,
Patrick

 Have you ridden with them?

What's this about oak platform pedals? Do you ride barefoot?

[RBW] Re: Anyone oil and beeswax cork grips?

2013-03-30 Thread sameness
While I've never tried beeswax, oil or similar, I also dislike the hard,
slick results that three or more fresh coats of shellac produce, so here's
my solution.

Try brushing on a coat of shellac, let it dry fully (doesn't take long),
then knock it back with a rag soaked in denatured alcohol. Repeat once or
twice more.

What you end up with is a shellacked cork grip which feels like it has seen
regular use for a year or so, i.e. still tactile, not as spongy as raw
cork, but not as slick and hard as the full treatment.

A nice happy medium, especially if you ride gloveless.
