Allez, TJD!

That's a beautiful bike & a brute of a ride, not for the faint of heart.

Hogpen Gap is genuine CAT 2 climb, steep and fearsome. Probably one of only
2 or 3 steels on the roads that day and certainly no other fenders or
frontloaders to be seen.

Re: [RBW] Re: Hats Off To...

2018-12-10 Thread Patrick Moore
Good point. In fact, I'll have to double check for this for those boxes I
described, since the CABQ has been upgrading its cycling trail system over
the last 2 years or so -- tho' some of it is pretty half assed.

Odd, I live literally next door to our bosque, and I can get to dirt by
riding through our commons area (and defiantly and consistently and
rebelliously and unrepentantly a and determinedly leaving the blanking
gates unlocked -- gaps between bars are 3', so what's the blanking point?
Idiot HOA) and by a couple of other fun-ish routes. But to get to paved
streets, it's either Coors Boulevard, 6-lane 60 mph, tho' wide shoulders
and striped, or Montano, 4 narrow lanes and narrow bike lane and impossible
intersection to start with (have been after city for 13 months now to fix
it, and they say they've gotten to looking for funding for design; we'll
see). Once I ride 1-2 miles along these busy roads, I can get to the main
CABQ bike path, the Rio Grande paved trail which takes you to others and so
all over the city. But otherwise good cycling infrastructure is (here
anyway) often vitiated by penny-ante connections and intersections.

I once saw a young mother in cycling kit on a road bike pulling a child
trailer along Montano abreast of Renaissance Boulevard where it is 3 lanes
feeding to and from I-25, a loop that starts from this feeder and serves a
huge acreage of box stores with huge parking lots. I must say, while I
admired her determination, the route gives me pause, and just me alone, and
despite having commuted in ABQ urgan traffic for years.

It’s not always (or even often?) the case, but sometimes the big box stores
have pedestrian access from the side/rear via sidewalk or trail. But the ones

Re: [RBW] Re: Hats Off To...

2018-12-10 Thread Patrick Moore
I find this generally true, but it's not quite as straightforward with some
of the Big Box stores, at least in my area, where these are clustered in
huge industrio/commercial areas surrounded by square miles of parking lots
and fed by 4 or 6 lane divided boulevards emptying directly into those
lots, said boulevards being major traffic arteries with traffic at 50 mph.
I have ridden to some of these, and seen others do so, but it ain't fun!
And I daresay it ain't safe, neither. Eg, Target just north of Coors/Paseo
Del Norte intersection; Costco off Eagle Ranch and the other one off
Renaissance. Even riding to the nearest Albertson's requires keen
attention, with all the cars impatient to dart out of various parking lots
spread out on both sides of the street along a crowded, insufficient access
road.

But I most usually do prefer to take a pleasant bike detour instead of
riding, walking, or certainly driving to the nearest store. We have a
Sprout's 2/3 mile south, but I prefer riding 5 to 10 miles (depending on
detours) to the Corrales one.

How stupid a car-centered infrastructure is! All the cost, land, energy,
time ugliness, and stress for what?

True for commuting as well.  There often will be low-traffic parallel
routes through neighborhoods that stay away from the major collectors,
mostly carrying local traffic only so far less traffic.  You may have
stop signs at every corner, as is the case here in Alexandria VA, but
commuting I'd rather be a little slower and a lot safer.  Commuting !=
training opportunity; in fact, trying to train while commuting is little
more than a way to insure you're going to need a shower to get
presentable when you do arrive at work, which will probably negate any
time savings created by going fast.

The newish MUP helps tremendiously as well. That didn’t exist initially and
meant I didn’t need to ride on the highway at all to get up the hill. But down
the pass to Colorado Springs is a different story entirely. I no longer try to
figure that out. Maybe once the planned MUP extensions happen, but as others
have said, the timelines on those, even if stated, are unreliable.

Isn't that just the truth!  Here in some places we're still waiting for
the construction of trails that first appeared in the master
transportation plans over 20 years ago.  Other trails & protected bike
lanes seem to have sprung up out of nowhere, seemingly never having
appeared in any planning documents ever before.  In still other cases,
the extensions finally were built -- to great acclaim and heavy use --
only after decades of waiting.

Thanks, Jock. I was dreading the tree-getting until I realized I could go by
