[RBW] Re: Hunqabeam Quickapillar Frame Finished!

2018-04-16 Thread Deacon Patrick
Jason asked about the hub. I’ll post details on the build, but its a Phil Wood
Kiss Off hub, 135 spacing, fixed/fixed.

Carla asked about gearing, cogs, and fenders. Fixed gear riding requires chain
tensioning via horizontal dropouts (sliding the wheel horizontally to adjust
the chain). A chain tensioner (as one might use with single speed) doesn’t work
with fixed gear. Yes, the Quickbeam dropouts allow a greater range of gears
(specs to be posted in the build post later), in this case 61” down to 42”.
Fenders can be used with the Quickbeam rear track style dropouts, but I won’t
be using them for the knobbies I ride and the noise and fuss.

Not sure I covered all your questions, holler if not.

Patrick

Patrick your frame is stunning! Are you able to have more choices with your
gearing on your fixed cogs by making these changes? You might have answered
this question or is it easier for you to use fenders? Either way the colors are

Me too, Chris. I was shocked by the difference. It was in sunlight when my wife
brought it home yesterday and I brought it in, but it was late afternoon, so
the sun went down soon after. I was stunned to see how dark it looked. I had to
wait till this morning to see if my eyes or brain were playing tricks on me.
Nope. It really is that stunning. In the photos, I compared the realitive
contrast between the pin striping and the headbadge to get some idea of
calibration of light change (if that makes sense).

Thanks, Phil!

Re: [RBW] Re: Hunqabeam Quickapillar Frame Finished!

2018-04-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Well worth reading. I find The Hobbit delightful, and have read it through
many times. TLOTR is a children's tale that grew up and, to some extent,
grew out of its genre clothing; it's essentially an ancient epic in the
form of a fantasy novel, but (thank God!) written by someone with very deep
roots indeed in ancient Western epic. So I find that much of it drags,
these sections saved by the author's descriptive imagination and his
language. So, I skim, and do so without embarrassment. Am currently
skimming through it again, for the 50th time or so. I've got the trilogy on
Kindle, as also The Hobbit.

The movies were, unusual for Hollywood (look at the Narnia travesties) kept
close to the books and well done, but the books are better.

Patrick Moore, who has read the Narnia series even more times (starting
when my father began to read them, just published, to us children circa age
5, 4, 2, and -- well, Peter wasn't born yet).

Well done! looking forward to seeing future pics built up and out in the

Regarding LOTR... I'm a bit ashamed to admit I have not read the trilogy.
I've read the Hobbit several times and always intended to complete the
trilogy but simply never made it a priority for no particular reason. That
will soon change since I've finally bought the set (the hardcover copies
Riv was selling last year) and they are slowly moving up on the to-do
list. I always wanted but hesitated to buy myself copies since most I've
seen anytime the thought occurred while at store had the film covers vs.
the illustrated copies Riv had and I strongly prefer illustrated for my own
book collection. I was very pleased to see Riv selling them when I was
placing an order for other items and added to the cart.

I personally enjoyed the films but never felt the need to purchase the dvds
for regular viewing. Last year I did have my own Hobbit and LOTR movie
marathon while my wife was out of town for a few days, however. At the
time I hadn't re-watched the LOTR films since initial release and had not
yet seen the Hobbit so I watched them all in order over the better part of
a week and borrowed from the local library. Obviously, I could have also
borrowed the books at any time but always thought I'd just buy them
eventually.
