Hey that is pretty cool. I have 2 old XC-pro mid cage in a box somewhere 
and plenty of 8 speed cassettes, and a sunrace 9s thumbie (for shimano). so 
might give it a try. I was just about to put an 8s wheel with a 7s cassette 
and spacer on my old MTB to be compatible with the 7s DX thumbies on it now.
