Michael,
Those are two stunning bikes. The Quickbeam with the blue handlebar wrap
matching the blue frame accents is beautiful.

After seeing all the other Quickbeams having fun on the left coast, I
brought her home to try something new. First new brakes (Paul), then new
tires (Schwalbe), but the real fun part (thanks Phillip Williamson!) was a
wheelset with a real S3X hub! I set her up with a WI 20t freewheel, so
there is a 70 in. direct drive third gear, and two lower gears.

Her brother wanted in on the upgrades, and a new set of Soma terra-cotta

Amazing Beamers! I'll be curious how you and the hub get along,
particularly on long, high torque climbs.

2014-11-04 Thread Michael Rivers
Thanks all for the nice comments. They are pretty, but more importantly I love
to ride the snot out out of them both.

Patrick (who I thank for Luna Sandals), I wanted to have the top gear my
cruising gear because the S3X hub is direct drive in third gear, unlike other
SA three speed hubs. My gearing is 44t front and White Industries 17t
freewheel back. Plugging that into Sheldon's Gear calculator gives me 70 gear
inches in third, with lower gears of 53 and 44. If I switched to a 20t
freewheel, that would change to 60, 45 and 37. Around here (Washington, DC)
the first set of gears has been fine, especially since I don't carry large
bags. Here is another picture of the silver on gravel with a few hills, and
the 44 has worked well.

Thanks again,

Your bike is the business! I've gone back and looked at the pictures a
couple of times. I think it looks so good because it looks so ready for
riding. Dialed.

I hope those wheels give you years and years of solid use. It looks like
they finally came home - I don't think I ever had them on the same bike at
the same time!

Re: [RBW] Re: My Quickbeam was sad after the Entmoot...

2014-11-04 Thread Eric Norris
The S3X/freewheel combo is a really great solution to making the QB more
versatile than a fixed gear or a single speed. I’ve got lots of miles on the
two S3X hubs I use, including several double centuries and a lot of climbing,
with no problems.

As I’ve postulated in other posts, I believe the S3X is more durable than
standard Sturmey Archer hubs due to the simpler internals. Moving the pawls
outside the hub and into the freewheel makes the hub simpler and quieter, and
makes repairs so much easier—just spin on a new freewheel (or, if you have a
White Industries, rebuild it).

2014-11-04 Thread Michael Rivers
Hi Eric,

I credit you with my first hearing of putting an S3X hub on a Quickbeam when
you posted about it here, which prompted me to grab Phillip's wheelset. I too
hope that the hub is reliable, and found this video that shows the limited
number of moving parts.

http://youtu.be/AJmUds2YQ74

I also appreciate being able to shift when stopped, and might convert the other
Quickbeam with a lower gear ratio for riding in Downtown DC.
