[RBW] Re: New (to me) Berthoud Rack

2012-06-12 Thread Joe Bernard
I recently purchased a couple of these. It's a nice bag for layers,
mini-pump/tools, sandwhiches and such, but I wouldn't rely on it for a
stack of books. The design wouldn't stress the seatpost, though, as the
rack would likely pivot down from the end of its stem-mount before the stem
could get much leverage on the seatpost.

This is a new one to me, looks like alot of stress on the seatpost to me
if bag was really loaded but maybe I am wrong. I am sure this is not new
but just the first time I have seen this type of setup.

The Carradice SQR does the same job in a much less obtrusive way. I don't
think either designed would impact a a good nitto or similar post.

+1 for the SQR. I've owned (and sold!) a number of them and it is a
very effective and reasonably priced device. It is limited to 10 kg,
but I daresay that the Berthoud device won't hold any more -- nor
would you want it to, with the load cantilevered out so far from the
saddle. The SQR holds the load closer in while keeping the bag off of
your legs.

Re: [RBW] Re: New (to me) Berthoud Rack

2012-06-12 Thread Joe Bernard
This Berthoud exists for one reason, and cost/practicality ain't it: It's a
lovely trunk-type bag for bikes without saddle loops or racks. It's not the
most cost-effective, and won't take a touring load for overnight campouts.
I like them because they look beautiful on the loopless/rackless bikes I
mounted them on, and carry the types of loads I generally carry on
bicycles.

RE: [RBW] Re: New (to me) Berthoud Rack

2012-06-12 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
As Joe said, I use it on an old Ibis Mojo mountain bike with no braze-ons and
no saddle loops. Works great. The rack and bag together are nearly $400
normally, which is awfully high. But Mike Kone at Boulder had a deal on the
combo a while back for under $200, so I pulled thetrigger.  I like it a lot;
functional and very pretty bag, though the rack looks a little clumky
installed.l
