I will vote for the email version of the group. (all of my groups actually). I set up a folder/filter and all of my bike related emails go into a separate folder. I can scroll the threads on my computer, my iPad or my cellphone. Since its Gmail based, I can read it anywhere on any device and everything stays in sync. As a daily reader and probably a once-a-month or so poster, I think this is a great forum with a wealth of information. It is always my go-to place to search for an answer, ask the question if search failed, or to sell Riv stuff that did not work out for me (I have bought quite a bit of stuff too...). Jim does a great job with moderating. I too belong to other google groups and some of them are suboptimal with signal-to-noise. While the diet stuff is a bit off topic, I would guess that I am in the same age group as most people in this group and diet does factor into my ride to eat lifestyle. I am an infrequent poster here, but I must say that I find this list to be an invaluable resource. Thanks to everyone for the kind words. I enjoy this virtual ride we're sharing every day. Most of the more extreme delays in passing posts through and unmoderating folks occurred last year. My mother-in-law was fighting cancer, my wife was with her 24/7 for the last couple months and she succumbed the day before Christmas, 2012. I don't think I overtly stated any of that here, though I did allude to it in apologies to folks whose posts and requests were excessively neglected. I'm not trolling for sympathy - it's life. But, during that time, though I was posting very little to the group and would lose several days or weeks to other priorities, this group helped breathe a little fresh air into things. Sometimes the most wonderful thing in the world is to think about something simple, beautiful and normal. Cycling and bikes have been there at several difficult periods of my life, patiently waited for me to catch up and nudged me along again. I do the web thing for this group. Mostly because I cannot stand to look at email, in fact I don't even know which email is set up for this group. I should probably figure that out though. I know I have lost threads or posts because of it, which isn't good. I just like forum formats better than email. This group is awesome though and the subject is right up my alley. Also, I still have a long delay between when I post and when the post appears so it makes me reluctant to post as much. [RBW] Re: Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.
Just to address the comments about moderation: At this point, I'm still the bottleneck. No one else is co-moderating posts. I release moderated comments in one of two ways - the first is via email. If I reply to notification of a moderated post, it goes through. This is quicker, but does not change the moderation status of a new member. So, I've tended to use it less and less. The second method is via the web interface. I have to be logged in, but can 1) post with no change to status, 2) post and update status, 3) delete and ban user and 4) delete post. I've been trying to use this method more frequently, as it allows me to pass through newer users in one step. Otherwise, I have to access the specific account and manually select and change the status. If someone emails me directly, I'll generally make the change manually. But, since I'm doing this for love rather than money, I try to keep the bulk of the changes efficient. Which means that when a new user posts for a second or third time, the bell finally goes off in my brain and I recognize the name. If it's not snarky, off-topic, related to a buy/sell transaction or some other reasonable trigger, then I'll pass it through and change the status. Statuses are updated by checking a box and then selecting an action, which means there's an imperfect variable (me) involved. Sometimes, I've got 20 or 30 spam tries sitting to be moderated, and one valid post. I have, upon occasion accidentally deleted (and banned) all of them with an errant keystroke (you guessed it, there is no Undo for that). More commonly, there are 3 or 4 for sale posts and a new user's interesting and on-topic post get's passed through without updating their status. Sometimes I can recall the persons identity and find them. Most of the time I figure they will post again and I'll get it the next time. All that (painstakingly) being said, I've changed some things around so that I'm passing things through 2 or 3 times a day, so there shouldn't be an excessive delay unless I'm in the studio or away from all internet access. Re: [RBW] Re: Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.
I visit and use this group like an internet forum and have never used the e-mail function. Re: [RBW] Re: Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.
No, I have updated. You may be thinking of my 1998 iMac which was finally unplugged about three months ago. I bought an iBook in 2005, which I still have, and a MacBook Pro a couple of years ago. I tote a laptop to work for writing reports. I've got my iPad, too, which I use at home for surfing the web and for travel. My 1986 Mac 512Ke lived until just a few years ago, after passing from my hands to the son of my college roommate to his aunt to a convent where it published church bulletins or something. But I have the same cell phone I have had for at least 10 years. It's held together with tape and the numbers are worn off the keypad. It can receive and send text messages although I don't know how to send a text. I'm a cell phone Luddite! Hmm... I have a 1996 All-Rounder, a mid-90s Ritchey, a 1990 Volvo 240- and I live in a 1908 house. I wonder if maybe I don't like new stuff? Proves my argument from our Trout Unlimited chapter board meeting yesterday. Texas has one chapter, Guadalupe River, it's also the state council, has 5000 members and is the 3rd largest business unit within the national organization, behind Michigan and New York state councils. Somebody said we could save money printing newsletters by forcing people to opt in if they want to receive printed newsletters rather than online. No, opting out is great, but if the choice is to opt in, we lose communication with 4000 of those 5000 members, and that communication is part of our directive. They need to know that we're working to restore native Rio Grande cutthroat trout in McKittrick Canyon. In my experience founding/moderating other similar groups (brain injury support), a small percentage of the folks registered participate regularly. [RBW] Re: Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.
Point of Order: There are 2339 members as of today, 4/28/13 Separate from the accounting, I like to think of this list as a focused resource. Now that the archiving bugaboos have been largely sorted out by google, the information which you can access from previous list posts and discussions is pretty significant. I do think that for all the basic questions which pop up (and just to be clear, basic questions are great!) there is some noticeable search activity which goes on as well. I don't think we are at all unique in that we have a smaller number of actively posting members. Where I like to think we differ is in the quality of the discussion. We don't need to argue that this year's drivetrain system is better than last year's, nor do we need to vouch for why the newest wrinkle is now and forever the latest/greatest. It can be a bit disconcerting to dive into a discussion which has been going on a while. (I mean, there are folks on this list I've been crossing paths with online for nearly two decades.) The common experience in an internet discussion is to raise a hand only to get it slapped back down. We're an exception to that. There are a whole host of reasons why folks join lists. Private notes now and again indicate that a good number of people greatly appreciate the quality of information and discussion here. Bicycles are simple tools. At least the ones which we seem to be collectively drawn to. Done right, they simple in the sense of violins or guitars - capable of realizing works of great complexity and beauty. And as they say, if you don't like the news, go out and make some of your own... ;^) Jim / list admin / cyclofiend.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Though new to this list I felt a common Rivhood with the participants and have learned immensely in my short participation. I also belong to another group and for the most part just read and learn and don't feel I have anything to contribute to that list. With the Riv group if I have a question I'll make a post and have always received helpful information. My favorite posts on this list are the ride reports with images included, they are always inspirational and get me out to do the same! Michael's question is interesting to ponder, however I am happy with the current state of the list and appreciate Jim's moderating the broad scope of topics and the polite tone. I've noted the same thing- I meet a fair amount of people with Rivs all around the bay area, especially coming through the shop where I work, but relatively few of us are on here. I don't necessarily find it surprising though, some people are simply content to own something and don't have the inclination to spend a lot of time seeking out information relevant to it. Me, I love tinkering with my bikes, changing things, and learning how they compare to other bikes, so a lot of the information on here is useful and interesting to me. [RBW] Re: Not too many people actively posting on this site for such a big amount of Rivs released to the wild over the years.
Don't get me wrong. I am not complaining. This is a valuable resource with quality posts and info, and as I have said before, *the* most pleasant bike forum I have *ever* seen. It is a pleasure to read and chat here. I like the low traffic, too. Adds to the laid back air. I was just thinking that with the few online Riv-specific resources that there are, owners aren't flooding in here just because it is one of the few to be had for them. Sure, people have lives (not that we don't). Maybe some don't have the time or the interest. Maybe some buy Riv's but just see them as any other bike to be bought and ridden and they are not that into cycling. Maybe there is something about the typical Riv owner that makes them less into using the net. Maybe they are all out on long cycling tours!! Curious business. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Longtime Riv custom owner here. I bike all the time, mostly to get about, sometimes for the fun of a longer ride with friends. I really enjoy reading the erudite comments of the posters here, and their willingness to answer questions. I do basic bike maintenance but am not handy with the more complex things. I feel I would comment more if I had more to offer. In sum, I am grateful for this site. Me, I love tinkering with my bikes, changing things, and learning how they compare to other bikes, so a lot of the information on here is useful and interesting to me. Not all of it (I skip over most of the diet stuff), but a lot of it. To us on the list, these facts are surprising. But true. There is another guy in town that also owns an Atlantis, I run into him maybe once a year. The first time I stopped him, I was expecting a degree of friendliness based on common ownership of a steel bike in a carbonic world. He didn't seem to think it interesting that 2 guys in the same town would have the same niche bike. When we see each other, he'll chat for a moment but then must be going. I've mentioned our So Cal Riv group but he has no interest. His bike always has panniers he told me he has no car, so that's his wheels. But as to any association with other Riv owners, he seems baffled by the idea. And he's probably not alone. dougP On Sunday, April 28, 2013 8:58:22 PM UTC-7, Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery wrote: Based on my experience, the RBW universe is pretty diverse.
