Hi Drew,
Check out the ADVRIDER forum. It has a huge forum, but it is very
comprehensive once you have an idea about what you want. It sounds like
you want to sell the 2 dirt bikes and buy a dual-sport---meaning that it
can be registered for the road but also be rideable on dirt, like a
I've owned all the 650 dual sports. The Suzuki DR650 is the smoothest
thumper by far. The KLR is the second worst to the KTM 640 LC4 which is
unbelievably bad. Like "something is going to break before I leave the
driveway" bad. I found the KLR650 really unpleasant on the road, between

You could buy my BMW 1995 R100 GSPD Black Classic.

I owned a bunch of motorcycles in the seventies and eighties. I switched to
cycling because I was an idiot and couldn't ride slow. My all time favorite
was a DT175 Yamaha dual sport. I liked it better than the 500cc bikes I
had. It was light, fast and simple and when I converted it to a cafe

go anywhere, and they're definitely theit own cult like Rivs. I ride an Aprilia
Scarabeo 250cc everywhere.

If 70 mph highway speeds are important, then you'll probably want something
like a KLR 650. I rode big ADV bikes for years. Once you get used to a twin,
triple, or four on the highway, a "thumper" isn't much fun, but if the highway
runs are relatively short and you want mechanical simplicity, a

Thanks everyone. I'm researching all of these as I make my way through the
posts. I suppose that I may have over stressed "off-road". While It certainly
needs to be capable on poorly maintained dirt roads. I also, almost more
importantly, need it to be able to get to 70mph or so on the highway.
Oh boy, I spent the last 5-7 years away from bicycles on a dual sport
motorcycle spree. Be careful, it's a slippery slope...
First of all, stay away from anything more than 15-20 or so years old.
Motorcycles don't age well, and the old twin shock, drum brake bikes just
sucked.
