I rode to church (~8 miles), then, later, back to Sprouts (our low budget
Wild Oats) to meet my brother to explore the acequia roads between Corrales
and Bernalillo. Firm but gravely hardpack and sand swamps. And goatheads.
My brother flatted twice on the 15 mile out and back; not me, despite
flicking a couple of deeply buried thorns from my front tire. Eastbound I
spun out my 83 high gear on pavement thanks to a strong NWesterly, but we
tcould only grun along slowly northbound on the raised and exposed service
roads. After dropping pressure to ~12/15 the sand was easy.

Riding back west to our starting point, into steady 33 mph NWesterlies,
my brother quipped, between gasps, world's sorriest paceline as we
grunted along at 12 mph on pavement. Temps in the low 30s.

2013-02-25 Thread PATRICK MOORE
Thanks, Steve. Actually, I want to know if the inner and outer rear
derailleur travel limits will remain the same for the 9 speed as for an 8
speed. If so, that means I can convert my Big Apple wheelset to a 9 while
leaving the Kojak wheel an 8, and yet not have to fiddle with the rd limit
screws.

I should have been more clear; I do know that the 9 will fit on the same
freehub body.

You are considering going from an 8 to a 9? Piece of cake. If
indexing, you need a new shifter and of course a new cassette and chain.
If you have a friction shifter, are skilled enough to make it work, and
do not plan to go index, all you need are the chain and cassette.
Contrary to what Shimano said at the time, derailleurs and chain rings
made for 8 work perfectly with 9.

Riding back west to our starting point, into steady 33 mph NWesterlies, my
brother quipped, between gasps, world's sorriest paceline as we grunted
along at 12 mph on pavement. Temps in the low 30s.
