Tim and Doug:
Thank you for all the info on packing and shipping.
Doug, your packing case sounds like it offers maximum protection. Perfect for
my Atlantis too:-)
Thanks again,
Richard

I got mine at Performance many years ago. Currently there are several
manufacturers and no doubt the features & technology are better. For
instance, my case weighs 30 lbs empty, so pack the Atlantis with racks,
etc., & 70 lbs tips the scales pretty quick. I haven't shipped my bike
I bought the Bike Pro soft travel case. My 62cm A. Homer Hilsen fit just fine.
I took it on the plane with me to France for PBP. I checked it at JFK and for
some reason, did not have to pay a fee (but the American website was pretty
clear that bikes were at least $150 if not oversized.) Since
Ben:
Yes, the 130" is Fed Ex & UPS ground. Last time I looked into taking my
case on United it was some horrendous cost like $300 each flight or
something else prohibitive. Beyond 62" airlines call it oversize & the
rate skyrockets.
You are correct that airlines limit is 62" which is a
Doug, where did you purchase your hard case? Sounds like a smart investment.
Thanks very much,
Richard

Interesting ideas guys.
I will look into the Amtrak idea.
Doug, are you sure about 130"? It seems airlines are mostly at 62
dimensional inches (length+height+width). 130 dimensional inches would be a
BIG box. The one I'm using to ship this sold bike is 81" (42+30+9).
As far as flights vs
Ben:
Check all the airlines serving your destination but IMHO it's rare for an
airline to be competitive with ground service. On top of that, the
airlines are no more gentle with luggage than UPS & Fed Ex are with
packages. If you take your bike on the airplane, you also have to think
about
I agree with everything Doug said. Traveling with a bike is a hassle and
expensive. Shipping a bike is easier, if not cheaper. You might also consider
shipping via Amtrak. While not necessarily cheaper, the Amtrak boxes are huge
and don't require much disassembly of the bike. You can just go to
If you are going to SF, call RBW and see if you can rent one of theirs.

Thanks Doug. Here is the box (not necessarily shipping service) I'm
considering. http://www.shipbikes.com/ebike.html I think this company is
an off shoot from Waterford. I'm not worried about assembly as my son has
a stand and all the tools I will need. Jet Blue quoted me $50, which is a
Michael,
Still not answering your question entirely--sorry!--but I used shipbikes
last year for the Cascade 1200. They saved me a considerable amount over
going straight to FedEx myself--I do not recall how much, but considerable.
I made one or two changes along the way and customer service
Michael:
They've thought this out, and quote the magic 129 dimension that keeps it
within non-oversize category. We've learned it's helpful to paint the
dimensions onto a box using big stencil letters. It looks official and
eliminates errors on the part of the measuring tape readers.
Michael:
My Atlantis has done a bit of traveling, both by air by ground. While
I'm not familiar with the box you reference, I can offer some thoughts in
general.
Within the US, look into shipping your bike ahead of time via ground
service. Great Debate about who to use: Fed Ex or UPS;
I'm told that some airlines are more bike friendly (Southwest, maybe
others) but have no personal knowledge of their rates limitations
Just to chime in on this one topic. I was just researching Southwest and
their boxed bike fee was raised from $50 to $75 as of February 2013.
That's their
I bought a Dahon speed TR specifically for travel. I've had varying
degrees of luck with oversize but the 50lb rule has always been hard and
fast. On trips to Hawaii it's either reduced or eliminated the need for a
rental car so any airline fees are offset.
