Rivvy Rings = Silver rings.
I kept my spacers on what I believe is my Sugino XD2 crankset, but could
have just as easily tossed 'em, when replacing my rings with the Silver
ones.
I do notice that the gap between my lowest Silver Ring , and the middle
ring, is much wider than the gap
This is just my basic understanding, so ymmv.
The spacers are necessary on the XD2 crank when you are using chainrings
that are NOT ramped and pinned (like the Rivvy/Silver rings).
It still seems weird to me that this spacer, which is .1mm, makes such a
huge difference, hah.

It might depend on the chain width as well. I am using an 8spd chain

I don't shift to the granny very much and the setup has less than 200

A coke can is about 0.1mm thick, or at least they used to be.

Mark at Riv confirmed the same, can should be around the right thickness.
My studio apartment doesn't have enough space for a drill press :-)

*Beware before messing with spacers on a crankset:*
There was an article in Riv reader 41, pg 16 about a person who used
spacers on his Sugino crankset to make something fit.
This caused not enough shoulder to hold the rings and the seperaters broke
and the rig went ker-flooey.

So wait, are you saying that the Riv rings do not fit XDs crankset?
I didn't even know XD2's had spacers on them. I thought the rings just
bolted to the cranks with no nonsense.
Please let us know how you worked this out as I was thinking of using
SILVER rings to replace mine when they
Follow-up note:
Per Mark at Riv, the Sugino spacers are .1mm.
They also don't have any and have them on order from Sugino but it's going
to be a month or so until they get them. So, if you have any kicking
around that you don't want to use, let me know!

Dave, the spacers as far as I can tell only come on riv sold ones with the
basic Sugino rings. Mine came that way. All other cranks I bought as
complete with the ramped Sugino rings for other retailers do not have them,
nor need them . It's because of the basic rings that they are needed ,
As far as the hidden bolt of the XD, I have found that not greasing the
bolts at all, leaving them as they come from the factory, works so well I
have not needed to use the little ring bolt tool. It's still an exercise
in futility to put it together though . . . lol. Whoever thought that
Zack:
It sounds like you need spacers half as thick as the ones you have. With
Rivendell being the source of the new rings as well as Sugino, they should
be able to advise you, and maybe point you to a source if they don't have
them.

Call Riv ! I ran into this same issue a few years ago and they very kindly
sent me some round spacers n/c . I'm pretty sure they were the same
thickness as the one's in your pic, or darn close.
Yeah, the standard Sugino rings mess up the spacing big time compared to

I had this problem! I thought it was just me...
I bought spacers at the bike shop. Then I returned them for ones half as
wide.

I own or have installed about 5 of Sugino XD2 cranks and never seen spacers
like that. I just pulled out a NIB box just to check. Is this on the
version of the crank with the steel middle ring?

Zach, I have owned three XD2 cranks and two of them needed 1-2 mm spacers
to move the middle ring out and prevent the chain from falling between the
middle and small ring. This was right out of the box. A good LBS should
have a collection of spacers. There's also an on-line retailer - loose
Oh yea, if you put a dab of grease on the crank at each hole it will help
to hold the spacer in place while you reassemble the crank.
