Your methods have merit and are cost effective! When I want to unplug and ride
peacefully I do put the phone in a saddlebag or musa pant pocket. However,
other rides I "need" or want to have access more quickly.

I use a similar strategy but more sophisticated equipment: left rear jersey
pocket. The iPhone 5's fingerprint unlock capability makes this strategy
all the more effective. Of course, this makes on-the-go referral more
awkward, but it is possible, with care.
