I have been super lazy for months, but finally got around to installing a
new pair of fenders on my Hunqapillar.

Takashi that Hunq looks great! I love that grey-red color scheme and the
fenders really set it off. So far my XO3's readiness had exceeded my own
willingness with the winter commuting. Lots of 30ish degree with mixed

but about 3 inches of rain the last 3 days.

Great to see an '80s GT Karakoram still on the road... and in such great
shape. Nostalgic glimpse back to my first mountain bike. I had their
totally ridiculous black crackle paint. Always a fun bike in the rain,
sleet, snow or sun that was well-loved until it was stolen in the late
'90s.
Thanks, John. Come summer, it gets a pair of 2.15 Schwalbe Big Bens and goes
bouncing over things in the woods.

On Monday,
Took a little break from commuting with very cold weather here, but I'll be
needing to commute no matter what at least 1 day a week, so I swapped out
tires on my porteur build. I have a studded tire'd bike that I'll finish up
tomorrow as well. For now, this did just fine:

Proof of concept ride! The 1-3 dusting ended up being a bit more of a
storm than most expected this morning but I had a BLAST getting to work. I
underestimated how much extra work riding in the snow would be, any more
snow and I'd probably wish I had gears. The Xo-3 did fantastic, drive
Tony,
Great pics and write-up. Bravo on biking today!
I was wishing I had been biking while I sat in gridlocked traffic at 6:15am
today. A snowplow took out a power pole and blocked all traffic lanes on
Connecticut Avenue. Good times!
I definitely need studded tires for my bike. Today's
Nice for being out. I'm at the point of chickening out of riding these past
few days. We did get up to +8F today. Lots of black ice. Even though I
have studded tires, the cars don't. Snow can be fun. Or, once it packs to
a hard icy surface, not so much. At least to me.

St. Paul,
Great pics, Tony! Yes, you'll likely find that snow resistance varies with
type and temperature and freeze/thaw cycle, etc. There is a reason Inuit
have over 30 words for snow -- each flavor is a vastly different
experience! Grin. Enjoy!

I took some really old ski gaiters and strapped them on to the albas. They
don't insulate much, but they do keep the wind from getting to my fingers.
When combined with lobster gloves I'm good into the mid-low 20s for my
commute. Don't have any snow tires for the Sam, but if it snows more
genius.
