[RBW] Re: duct tape to enamel paint
I haven't tried duck tape but I have used gaffer's tape, it is used in the photo industry to attach things like lights, grip gear, wires etc. to walls, floors, etc. anything that could have the finish marred by regular tape. When removed it leaves no residue and does not effect the painted surface. I've used it on my bikes in a similar manner as you. You can get it at any pro photo supply shop or on-line at places like BH Photohttp://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=gaffer+tapeN=0InitialSearch=yessts=ta . +1 on gaffer tape being a superior product for not leaving gooey residue. But very elegant glued-on shrink-fit tubing can be a super elegant solution. The famous Anton Tutter does wiring jobs for rando bikes, most notably JPWeigle. You can seek out his shrink-fit solutions on flickr. I can't post flickr links from work but try looking for somervillebikes as the user handle. Maybe somervillebike. Otherwise email me off-list and I can try to get you an introduction. That sounds intriguing... I'd also abstain from flicker-ing while at work, but luckily I'm on the other side of the pond; therefore, my work day is theoretically over. I'll have to check this out when I get home in a few minutes, but if you could point me to direct links (or an intro) later today, that would be awesome. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. As bizarre chance would have it, I also have a roll of fluorescent pink gaffer tape. If you find you only want a half-meter of the stuff to experiment with, I could rip some off my roll and mail it to you. Why do I have fluorescent pink gaffer tape? I've got about 70 different colors of gaffer and duct tape, and have made a small hobby out of making useful stuff with tape, including wallets. That's pretty slick... but still, if the wiring is black, you can see the black on top of the bright colored bike paint. I am leaning towards a tape solution, as this has a better chance of completely hiding/camouflaging the cable. Absolutely do not use Duct (or Duck) tape on bikes unless you are miles from anywhere and that's the only way out. It makes for a nasty clean up. Still, I do have a length of it wrapped onto a small dowel... But, YES on Gaffer's Tape. That is wonderful stuff. Also - the other item I found is Rescue Tape which comes in several colors and clear. It is a self-fusing silicone wrap which I've used to water-restrict openings and attachments. I'm not sure how well the color will match, so I think the only solution would be for you to ship that very stylish mixte over to me in America for a closer tape consultation. I will keep the bike for a short time, maybe 30 years or so, and then return it to you. :) If you do want a half-meter of tape, I would just stick it to wax paper and put it in a flat envelope. It would only cost a few dollars to mail to Europe, I think. You pay for the postage and I will donate the tape. On Monday, August 5, 2013 11:22:52 AM UTC-7, SMP wrote: Nice etsy shop! Duly noted on the duct/duck tape. Thanks for pointing me to the Rescue Tape. I think clear option might be the best bet for me, if the pink Gaffer isn't a good match for my frame. Re: [RBW] Re: duct tape to enamel paint
Hopefully this won't get me banned from the list, but I've been using self-fusing silicone tape to finish my gel tape bar wraps for a few years now. Three strikes for me already for not using cotton tape, twine and shellac... It's available in colors, though I only do black bar wrap (strike 4?), so black silicone tape. It's fast and neat, you cut about a 6 length, stretch it tight as you wind around the bar, next to the handlebar ferrule. Since it has no adhesive, there's no oozing adhesive later, like electrical tape, and since it fuses/sticks to itself, it never peels or separates. Seems impervious to normal temperature extremes, doesn't loosen/degrade in hot temps or solidify/crack in low temps. Jersey temps, anyway, up to 100deg in summer, down to zero in winter. Never thought of it for lighting/computer cable wrap since the native width is 1, kinda wide for cable wrap. You could cut it lengthwise, I suppose, but being gel-like, it could be a little squirrely to cut lengthwise? Hopefully this won't get me banned from the list If you get banned for that, I quit! :-) If there is one thing this group should be zealously opposed to, it is zealotry. Besides, you've got several things going for you that trump any orthodox interpretation of Rivish acceptability. 1. You insist on being comfortable, and don't care what people tell you on how to get there 2. You thought of it and did it yourself 3. Rescue tape is MUSA! I'm going to order a roll right now! Re: [RBW] Re: duct tape to enamel paint
My first thought looking at the silicone rescue tape was Bar Tape! I got halfway through comparing roll lengths to cotton tape, and then got distracted by work. Pff. On the duct-tape-to-bike subject, I got rescued the other day by a guy with a tube and inflator kit duct taped to the seat post of his carbon bike.
