Most of you know the route from Hatfield Government Center Station. According to the weather talkers, a system is supposed to come in today. It made good sense to head out to take advantage of the great dry season so far. The views from 47 going to Banks were pretty fantastic: The mist was starting to pool in the coastal range foothills, and the fall colors were totally on. I didn't leave work until 3:30pm, so the sun was over the horizon by the time I made it to the Banks trailhead. The trail is surprisingly clean: I would expect more leafy debris. I made good time, arriving at the campground shortly after 6:30: very very dark.
Shawn replied to my bell call. We were the only people at the Brooke Creek campsite. Wine was drank, words were exchanged, pictures of the stars were taken. A hammock was slept in. And how. I had to get back to Portland by 10am, so I started breaking camp shortly after 6am. The stars were still all out, and there was no sign of the coming sun. It was a little below freezing at this point--there was frost on the ground. I need to get wind barriers for my hands: the air flowing past them as I sped down the gentle slope of the Banks-Vernonia trail made for a fair amount of discomfort. I witnessed a gorgeous sunrise just as I was halfway between Banks and Forest Grove. By the time I rolled into Hillsboro, the sun was obscured by low cloud cover and the day had returned to some semblance of "dreary". I had a mildly dazed ride back on the blue line.
